It has been shown that deformation processed Cu-19% Nb alloys with good strength and electrical conductivity can be developed in sizes that are useful for engineering applications. Mot extrusion of bundled sub-elemental Cu-19% Nb wires followed by cold drawing to make a composite wire of diameter equal to that of the initial sub-elemental wires resulted in a 67% increase in the ultimate tensile stress. However, on subsequent cold drawing of this composite wire the strength increased at a slower rate than that obtained on continuing cold drawing of the sub-elemental wire and the strength differential decreased. In addition, after cold drawing to equivalent diameters the electrical conductivity of the composite wire was less than that of the sub-elemental wire. These results indicate that while high strengths and good electrical conductivities can be produced in larger size deformation processed Cu-Nb composites by a process of bundling, extrusion and cold drawing of sub-elemental wires, there appears to be a limit to the amount of subsequent cold drawing feasible before the benefit in properties ceases.  相似文献

Recently, there have been some reports that changes in serum lipid composition may be related to suicide, major depression and immune-inflammatory responses. Findings from our laboratory suggest that major depression is accompanied by reduced formation of cholesteryl esters and perhaps by impairment of reverse cholesterol transport. The latter is reportedly accompanied by lower serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). The aim of this study was to examine whether (i) major depression is accompanied by lower serum HDL-C or by abnormal levels of serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein-C (LDL-C) or vitamin E, (ii) suicidal attempts are related to lower serum HDL-C and (iii) there are significant associations between serum HDL-C and immune/inflammatory markers. A total of 36 subjects with major depression, of whom 28 patients showed treatment resistance, as well as 28 normal control subjects, had blood sampled for the assay of the above lipids, serum zinc (Zn), albumin (Alb) and flow cytometric determination of the T-helper/T-suppressor (CD4+/CD8+) T-cell ratio. In total, 28 depressed subjects had repeated measures of these variables both before and after treatment with antidepressants. Serum HDL-C and total cholesterol, as well as the HDL-C/cholesterol ratio, were significantly lower in subjects with major depression than in normal controls. Serum HDL-C levels were significantly lower in depressed men who had at some time made serious suicidal attempts than in those without such suicidal behaviour. Treatment with antidepressants for 5 weeks did not significantly alter either serum HDL-C or other lipid variables. Serum HDL-C levels were significantly and negatively correlated with the (CD4+/CD8+) T-cell ratio, and positively correlated with serum Alb and Zn. These results suggest that (i) lower serum HDL-C levels are a marker for major depression and suicidal behaviour in depressed men, (ii) lower serum HDL-C levels are probably induced by the immune/inflammatory response in depression and (iii) there is impairment of reverse cholesterol transport from the body tissues to the liver.  相似文献

To study the interaction of T cell receptor with its ligand, a complex of a major histocompatibility complex molecule and a peptide, we derived H-2Kd-restricted cytolytic T lymphocyte clones from mice immunized with a Plasmodium berghei circumsporozoite peptide (PbCS) 252-260 (SYIPSAEKI) derivative containing photoreactive Nepsilon-[4-azidobenzoyl] lysine in place of Pro-255. This residue and Lys-259 were essential parts of the epitope recognized by these clones. Most of the clones expressed BV1S1A1 encoded beta chains along with specific complementary determining region (CDR) 3beta regions but diverse alpha chain sequences. Surprisingly, all T cell receptors were preferentially photoaffinity labeled on the alpha chain. For a representative T cell receptor, the photoaffinity labeled site was located in the Valpha C-strand. Computer modeling suggested the presence of a hydrophobic pocket, which is formed by parts of the Valpha/Jalpha C-, F-, and G-strands and adjacent CDR3alpha residues and structured to be able to avidly bind the photoreactive ligand side chain. We previously found that a T cell receptor specific for a PbCS peptide derivative containing this photoreactive side chain in position 259 similarly used a hydrophobic pocket located between the junctional CDR3 loops. We propose that this nonpolar domain in these locations allow T cell receptors to avidly and specifically bind epitopes containing non-peptidic side chains.  相似文献

The pancreas is an ideal organ for adenoviral gene therapy because of the high level of gene transfer that can be achieved and because of the many diseases that can potentially be treated using this technology. In this report, we characterize the immune response to direct pancreatic injection of adenovirus and we overcome some of the limitations it imposes by using immunosuppression. Direct injection of recombinant adenovirus into the pancreas leads to the production of neutralizing antibodies and to sensitized splenocytes which engage in increased cytotoxic, lymphoproliferative, and cytokine release activity when reexposed to adenovirus. Transgene expression is transient and the vector cannot be readministered. Deletion of CD4+ T helper cells improves expression over time (40% of pancreatic cells express transgene at day 28 vs. 5% in controls), and allows the vector to be readministered in the pancreas, albeit, inefficiently, when compared to naive animals. Similarly, blockade of CD40 ligand, which preserves the CD4+ T helper cell population, also improves expression over time (30% of pancreatic cells express transgene at day 28), and allows the vector to be readministered. With both approaches, neutralizing antibodies are decreased and the remaining splenocytes do not engage in activated immune responses. Thus, local delivery of the adenoviral vector induces a systemic response that prevents pancreatic readministration, even with direct injection. Blockade of CD40 ligand and T helper cell depletion are transient regimens that induce systemic immunosuppression. Until the development of newer strategies that selectively suppress adenoviral immune responses, these are viable alternatives for enhancement of pancreatic adenoviral delivery.  相似文献

The heart of a normal human being beats about 38 million cycles every year. An artificial heart valve, to perform at this rate in the adverse conditions inside the heart for 20 years or more, should be highly wear-resistant with excellent fatigue strength. Thus, the study of mechanical and physical properties of the materials intended for use in artificial valves becomes an inseparable part of the valve development process itself. The physical and mechanical requirements of the materials used in the Chitra heart valve have been evaluated by studying their water absorption, adhesive wear and abrasive properties. The mechanical durability of the device has been assessed by accelerated life cycle testing. The test systems developed for the above are described here. The results show UHMW-PE to be a highly wear-resistant material suitable for the occluder. The accelerated wear tests show that the valve with Haynes-25 alloy cage and UHMW-PE disc has durability in excess of 50 years.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Prevention of hypothermia during abdominal surgery by insulating or heat-transferring methods has been the subject of numerous investigations. This study approaches the problem from a less discussed point of view, i.e. the effect of different surgical techniques on body temperature changes. METHODS: Body temperature was measured at 3 core and 6 skin points in 40 patients scheduled for cholecystectomy through open laparotomy or laparoscopy with pneumoperitoneum created and maintained with unwarmed carbon dioxide (CO2) insufflation. End-tidal CO2 was kept constant by adjustments of respiratory frequency. Anaesthesia, intravenous infusions, and draping of the patients were standardized. RESULTS: During the first 1 h of anaesthesia core temperatures decreased approximately by 0.7 degrees C and distal skin temperatures increased by 7 degrees C in both groups. At the end of surgery heat balance was similar in both groups. An increase of 2.5 1.min-1 in respiratory minute volume was needed to control end-tidal CO2 levels in the laparoscopy group during pneumoperitoneum which was maintained with a CO2 flow of 1.2 1.min-1 through the abdominal cavity. CONCLUSION: Laparoscopic technique with unwarmed carbon dioxide insufflation does not offer any advantage in terms of body temperature changes when compared to open surgery.  相似文献

We examined 118 infrainguinal grafts (103 patients) to determine the effect changes in the angle of theta or Doppler angle had on the accuracy of velocity measurements made with a duplex scanner. Four separate measurements of peak velocity were made on each graft. Three measurements were made with the flow toward the probe at 60 degrees, 50 degrees, 120 degrees (60 degrees the other way). The probe was then turned 180 degrees so the flow was away from the probe and measurements were made at 60 degrees. When the primary cursor was aligned with the vessel wall (Technologist A), the mean velocity at 60 degrees was 69.4 cm/sec and 57.3 cm/sec at 50 degrees, a difference of 12 cm/sec. The same measurements done by Technologist B (primary cursor non aligned with the wall), showed a 10 cm/sec difference (60.7 and 50.5). We saw a consistent difference with even this small difference in the angle of theta throughout the study. The mean velocity obtained by Technologist A when the flow was toward the probe was 61.7. When the probe was turned 180 degrees (flow away from the probe), the mean velocity was 60.5. The same measurements by Technologist B were 51.8 and 50.5. This indicates that the direction of the flow of blood towards or away from the probe does not effect the velocity measurements. Using the vessel wall to line up the primary cursor provides a consistent and easily reproducible reference point to compare measurements made on different days but is less important for single measurements.  相似文献

The increasing industrialization and motorization of the world has led to a steep rise for the demand of petroleum products. Petroleum based fuels are obtained from limited reserves. These finite reserves are highly concentrated in certain regions of the world. Therefore, those countries not having these resources are facing a foreign exchange crisis, mainly due to the import of crude oil. Hence, it is necessary to look for alternative fuels, which can be produced from materials available within the country. In addition, the use of vegetable oil as fuel is less polluting than petroleum fuels. This paper reviews the production and characterization of vegetable oil as well as the experimental work carried out in various countries in this field. In addition, the scope and challenges being faced in this area of research are clearly described.  相似文献

Vegetable oils pose some problems when subjected to prolonged usage in compression ignition engines because of their high viscosity and low volatility. The common problems are poor atomization, carbon deposits, ring sticking, fuel pump failure, etc. Converting the high viscosity vegetable oil into its blends or esters can minimize these problems. The various blends of rubber seed oil and diesel were prepared and its important properties such as viscosity, calorific value, flash point, fire point, etc. were evaluated and compared with that of diesel. The blends were then subjected to engine performance and emission tests and compared with that for diesel. It was found that 50–80% of rubber seed oil blends gave the best performance. Long run tests were conducted using optimized blend and diesel. It was found that blend fueled engine has higher carbon deposits inside combustion chamber than diesel-fueled engine. Utilization of blends requires frequent cleaning of fuel filter, pump and the combustion chamber. Hence, it is recommended that rubber seed oil–diesel blend fuel is more suitable for rural power generation.  相似文献
