A reliable triangular mesh intersection algorithm and its application in geological modelling

We introduce a reliable intersection algorithm for manifold surface meshes. The proposed algorithm builds conforming surface meshes from a set of intersecting triangulated surfaces. This algorithm effectively handles all degenerate triangle–triangle intersection cases. The key idea of the algorithm is based on an extensive set of triangle–edge intersection cases, combined with an intersection curve tracking method. The intersection operations do not rely on global spatial search operations and no remeshing steps are needed. The intersection curves are introduced into each surface mesh using a unique curve imprinting algorithm. The imprinting algorithm naturally handles degenerate intersection cases of many surfaces at an edge or at a point. The algorithm produces a consistent mesh data structure for subsequent mesh optimization operations. The mesh intersection algorithm is used within a general framework for modelling and meshing of geological formations, which are essential for reliable mathematical modelling of oil reservoirs.

An efficient and unbiased method for sensitivity analysis of stochastic reaction networks

We consider the problem of estimating parameter sensitivity for Markovian models of reaction networks. Sensitivity values measure the responsiveness of an output with respect to the model parameters. They help in analysing the network, understanding its robustness properties and identifying the important reactions for a specific output. Sensitivity values are commonly estimated using methods that perform finite-difference computations along with Monte Carlo simulations of the reaction dynamics. These methods are computationally efficient and easy to implement, but they produce a biased estimate which can be unreliable for certain applications. Moreover, the size of the bias is generally unknown and hence the accuracy of these methods cannot be easily determined. There also exist unbiased schemes for sensitivity estimation but these schemes can be computationally infeasible, even for very simple networks. Our goal in this paper is to present a new method for sensitivity estimation, which combines the computational efficiency of finite-difference methods with the accuracy of unbiased schemes. Our method is easy to implement and it relies on an exact representation of parameter sensitivity that we recently proved elsewhere. Through examples, we demonstrate that the proposed method can outperform the existing methods, both biased and unbiased, in many situations.

Implementation of the inverse circular radon transform‐based imaging approach for breast cancer screening

In this article, the approach based on the inverse circular radon transform technique (ICRT) is proposed to obtain the image of the breast cancer screening based on microwaves. A simplified numerical breast model is constructed and computational results are obtained with the use of synthetic aperture radar principle. A tumor phantom is produced and the experimental results are acquired by using sand, screw and phantoms with the use of an experimental setup prototype that is also presented in this study. The simulation results are verified and validated by experimental results. The resultant images generated using the simulated and experimental data show a good agreement with the designed scenarios.     

Storage stability of cod liver oil organogels formed with beeswax and carnauba wax

In this study, organogels of cod liver oil (CLO) with beeswax (BW) and carnauba wax (CW) were prepared, and compared with a commercial margarine (CM). Oil binding capacities (OBC) of BW organogels were over 99%, while CW had a maximum OBC value of 91.28%. Crystal formation time of BW was shorter. Although the highest solid fat content (SFC) was in the 10% CW containing sample (8.69%), it was 28.99% in the CM sample at 20 °C. The peak melting temperature of CM was 43.70 °C, and BW organogel at 3% addition had the closest values (45.42 °C). Firmness and stickiness values of the organogels were lower than that of CM sample. No significant change in the texture parameters during storage was detected, indicating good stability. There was no hurdle against oxidation by organogelation during storage. This study has shown that CLO organogels can be suitable spreadable products.
