An exfoliation-reassembly-activation (ERA) approach to lithium-ion battery cathode fabrication is introduced, demonstrating that inactive HCoO(2) powder can be converted into a reversible Li(1-x) H(x) CoO(2) thin-film cathode. This strategy circumvents the inherent difficulties often associated with the powder processing of the layered solids typically employed as cathode materials. The delamination of HCoO(2) via a combination of chemical and mechanical exfoliation generates a highly processable aqueous dispersion of [CoO(2) ](-) nanosheets that is critical to the ERA approach. Following vacuum-assisted self-assembly to yield a thin-film cathode and ion exchange to activate this material, the generated cathodes exhibit excellent cyclability and discharge capacities approaching that of low-temperature-prepared LiCoO(2) (~83 mAh g(-1) ), with this good electrochemical performance attributable to the high degree of order in the reassembled cathode. 相似文献

Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) typically range in size from 10 to 50 μm and proteins that mediate hMSC adhesion and differentiation usually have a size of a few nanometers. Nanomaterials with a feature size smaller than 100 nm have demonstrated the unique capability of promoting osteoblast (bone forming cell) adhesion and long-term functions, leading to more effective bone tissue regeneration. For new bone deposition, MSCs have to be recruited to the injury or disease sites and then differentiate into osteoblasts. Therefore, designing novel nanomaterials that are capable of attracting MSCs and directing their differentiation is of great interest to many clinical applications. This in vitro study investigated the effects of nanophase hydroxyapatite (nano-HA), nano-HA/poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) composites and a bone morphogenetic protein (BMP-7) derived short peptide on osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs. The short peptide was loaded by physical adsorption to nano-HA or by dispersion in nanocomposites and in PLGA to determine their effects on hMSC adhesion and differentiation. The results showed that the nano-HA/PLGA composites promoted hMSC adhesion as compared to the PLGA controls. Moreover, nano-HA/PLGA composites promoted osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs to a similar extent with or without the presence of osteogenic factors in the media. In the MSC growth media without the osteogenic factors, the nanocomposites supported greater calcium-containing bone mineral deposition by hMSC than the BMP-derived short peptide alone. The nanocomposites provided promising alternatives in controlling the adhesion and differentiation of hMSCs without osteogenic factors from the culture media, and, thus, should be further studied for clinical translation and the development of novel nanocomposite-guided stem cell therapies. 相似文献

Cadmium selenide (CdSe) nanoparticles of 2–7 nm diameter were synthesized by a hot injection method and their TOPO ligands exchanged with pyridine by a liquid–liquid extraction process. The effects of the ligand exchange on the material properties of the nanoparticles and device performance of the bulk hetero-junction (BHJ) solar cell were systematically investigated. The wavelength shift to a shorter value observed in the PL spectra of the pyridine-capped CdSe indicates that the size of nanoparticles decreased due to the exchange of the surface ligands of the CdSe from TOPO to pyridine. Improvements in the power conversion efficiency of BHJ solar cells made with pyridine-capped CdSe are mainly attributed to the enhanced current collection, Jsc=0.43 mA/cm2 (TOPO) to 1.4 mA/cm2 (pyridine). 相似文献

An individual's health status immediately following a disaster may predict long-term morbidity and mortality. However, relative to the growing literature on postdisaster mental health, less is known about physical health outcomes, particularly in developing countries. Unlike most studies, the current investigation obtained physical health data both before and after Typhoon Xangsane, which struck the Da Nang province of Vietnam in 2006, and related these predisaster data to postdisaster health functioning, among other factors. Specifically, a sample of 795 randomly selected adults was interviewed both prior to, and after the typhoon. Results indicated that participants with symptoms of major depressive disorder and panic disorder, older participants, and participants who reported high distress during the actual typhoon were most at-risk for lower self-rated health postdisaster compared to those without these risk factors. Given that Vietnam is still designated a developing country, the present study enhances the literature on postdisaster physical health correlates in developing nations. The development of a facile method for fabricating one-dimensional, precisely positioned nanostructures over large areas offers exciting opportunities in fundamental research and innovative applications. Large-scale nanofabrication methods have been restricted in accessibility due to their complexity and cost. Likewise, bottom-up synthesis of nanowires has been limited in methods to assemble these structures at precisely defined locations. Nanomaterials such as PbZr(x)Ti(1-x)O(3) (PZT) nanowires (NWs)--which may be useful for nonvolatile memory storage (FeRAM), nanoactuation, and nanoscale power generation--are difficult to synthesize without suffering from polycrystallinity or poor stoichiometric control. Here, we report a novel fabrication method which requires only low-resolution photolithography and electrochemical etching to generate ultrasmooth NWs over wafer scales. These nanostructures are subsequently used as patterning templates to generate PZT nanowires with the highest reported piezoelectric performance (d(eff) ~ 145 pm/V). The combined large-scale nanopatterning with hierarchical assembly of functional nanomaterials could yield breakthroughs in areas ranging from nanodevice arrays to nanodevice powering. 相似文献

In this study, we report the development of a microenvironment probe station capable of detecting the effect of small changes to the local environment around a carbon nanotube conduction channel. The microenvironment probe station is highly versatile and is used to characterize alterations in carbon nanotube field effect transistor electrical behavior in response to changes in temperature, gas species, infrared and ultraviolet light. All devices were electrically characterized in atmospheric, ultrahigh vacuum and oxygen-rich environments. The results suggest that devices could be changed from n-type at 1 x 10(-8) torr through an intermediate ambipolar state at 1 x 10(-4) torr to p-type at atmosphere solely by increasing the oxygen concentration. The average resistance of these carbon nanotube field effect transistors after annealing was observed to decrease by approximately 54% from their initial value under ultrahigh vacuum to their final value in the presence of pure oxygen while corresponding threshold voltages shifts were also observed. Illumination with infrared light resulted in a approximately 10% increase in drain current with an estimated response time <1 fs due to photon-induced electron-hole pair generation. Illumination with ultraviolet light resulted in approximately 5-15% reduction in drain current due to photon-induced desorption of oxygen adsorbate. 相似文献

The correlated metal UCoGe is a weak itinerant ferromagnet with a Curie temperature T C=3 K and a superconductor with a transition temperature T s=0.6 K. We review its basic thermal, magnetic—on the macro and microscopic scale—and transport properties, as well as the response to high pressure. The data unambiguously show that superconductivity and ferromagnetism coexist below T s=0.6 K and are carried by the same 5f electrons. We present evidence that UCoGe is a p-wave superconductor and argue that superconductivity is mediated by critical ferromagnetic spin fluctuations. 相似文献

Processing by severe plastic deformation (SPD) typically increases the strength of metals and alloys drastically by decreasing
their grain size into the submicrometer or nanometer range but the ductility of such materials remains typically low. This
report describes the first demonstration that it is possible to increase the room temperature ductility of aluminum-based
alloys processed by SPD and to attain elongations to failure of >150% while retaining the enhanced strength. This unique combination
of properties is due to the occurrence of grain boundary sliding at room temperature. The sliding was obviously achieved by
