PURPOSE: This article proposes a hypothesis regarding the value of saving the fractured condyle and disc in their displaced position in ankylosis type III for optimal temporomandibular joint (TMJ) function and growth, and describes four cases treated in this manner. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Four patients (three females and one male, 9 to 48 years old) with TMJ ankylosis type III of 3 to 8 years' duration, a maximal mouth opening of 15 to 19 mm, and severely limited lateral and protrusive movements were treated. The ankylosed sites were resected, leaving the displaced condyle and disc in their medial position. RESULTS: Fifteen to 60 months after surgery, the patients had a maximal mouth opening of 44 to 50 mm, as well as better contralateral and protrusive movements. In addition, two young patients (9 and 11 years old) showed an improved facial symmetry. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment of patients with type III TMJ ankylosis should involve retention rather than removal of the displaced condyle and disc. The condyle and disc are left untouched in their precarious medial position so as to provide normal function and growth.  相似文献

A tight-binding model for scanning tunneling microscopy images of a molecule adsorbed on a metal surface is described. The model is similar in spirit to that used to analyze conduction along molecular wires connecting two metal leads and makes it possible to relate these two measurements to each other. In particular, the dependence of molecular conduction properties along and across a molecular chain on the chain length, intersite electronic coupling strength, and on thermal and disorder effects are discussed and contrasted. It is noted that structural or chemical defects that may affect drastically the conduction along a molecular chain have a relatively modest influence on conduction across the molecular wire in the transverse direction.  相似文献

Metal oxide nanoparticles have marked antibacterial activity. The toxic effect of these nanoparticles, such as those comprised of ZnO, has been found to occur due to an interaction of the nanoparticle surface with water, and to increase with a decrease in particle size. In the present study, we tested the ability of ZnO nanoparticles to affect the viability of the pathogenic yeast, Candida albicans (C. albicans). A concentration-dependent effect of ZnO on the viability of C. albicans was observed. The minimal fungicidal concentration of ZnO was found to be 0.1 mg ml(-1) ZnO; this concentration caused an inhibition of over 95% in the growth of C. albicans. ZnO nanoparticles also inhibited the growth of C. albicans when it was added at the logarithmic phase of growth. Addition of histidine (a quencher of hydroxyl radicals and singlet oxygen) caused reduction in the effect of ZnO on C. albicans depending on its concentration. An almost complete elimination of the antimycotic effect was achieved following addition of 5 mM of histidine. Exciting the ZnO by visible light increased the yeast cell death. The effects of histidine suggest the involvement of reactive oxygen species, including hydroxyl radicals and singlet oxygen, in cell death. In light of the above results it appears that metal oxide nanoparticles may provide a novel family of fungicidal compounds.  相似文献

We demonstrate a directional beaming of photons emitted from nanocrystal quantum dots that are embedded in a subwavelength metallic nanoslit array with a divergence angle of less than 4°. We show that the eigenmodes of the structure result in localized electromagnetic field enhancements at the Bragg cavity resonances, which could be controlled and engineered in both real and momentum space. The photon beaming is achieved using the enhanced resonant coupling of the quantum dots to these Bragg cavity modes, which dominates the emission properties of the quantum dots. We show that the emission probability of a quantum dot into the narrow angular mode is 20 times larger than the emission probability to all other modes. Engineering nanocrystal quantum dots with subwavelength metallic nanostructures is a promising way for a range of new types of active optical devices, where spatial control of the optical properties of nanoemitters is essential, on both the single and many photons level.  相似文献

Stressful unpredictable life events have been implicated in numerous diseases. It is now becoming clear that some life periods are more vulnerable than others. As adolescence is a sensitive period in brain development, the long-term effects of stress during this period could be significant. We investigated the long-term effects of exposure to unpredictable chronic mild stress in adolescent mice on alternative splicing of Sirtuin 1. One-month-old mice were exposed to 4 weeks of UCMS and examined for anxiety and cognition at the age of 2, 4 and 6 months. We found a rise in anxious behavior immediately after the exposure to stress. Notably, there was a long-term impairment of performance in cognitive tasks and an imbalance in Sirtuin 1 and TrkB receptor alternative splicing in the stress-exposed mice compared with controls. To conclude, our results show that exposure to unpredictable chronic mild stress during adolescence affects cognition in adulthood. Understanding pathways affiliated with stress may help minimize the long-term emotional effects of an unpredictable, stressful event.  相似文献

The basic formula of the thermal dilution method for the measurement of cardiac output is proven for pulsatile flow, assuming constant stroke rate, equal stroke volumes, and ideal ventricular mixing. Firstly, for an ideal thermistor of negligible response time which presents the temperature of the blood in the pulmonary artery as a step function; then it is shown that the area under the curve of temperature versus time is independent of the response time of the thermistor; hence, the formula holds for all thermistors.  相似文献

Multispectral photodetectors (MSPs) and circularly polarized light (CPL) sensors are important in opto-electronics, photonics, and imaging. A capacitive photodetector consisting of an interdigitated electrode coated with carbon dot/anthraquinone-polydiacetylene is constructed. Photoexcitation of the carbon dots induces transient electron transfer to the anthraquinone moieties, and concomitant change in the film dielectric constant and recorded capacitance. This unique photodetection mechanism furnishes wavelength selectivity that is solely determined by the absorbance of the carbon dots incorporated in the anthraquinone-polydiacetylene matrix. Accordingly, employing an array of polymerized-anthraquinone photodetector films comprising carbon dots (C-dots) exhibiting different excitation wavelengths yielded optical “capacitive fingerprints” in a broad spectral range (350–650 nm). Furthermore, circular light polarization selectivity is achieved through chiral polymerization of the polydiacetylene framework. The carbon dot/anthraquinone-polydiacetylene capacitive photodetector features rapid photo-response, high fidelity, and recyclability as the redox reactions of anthraquinone are fully reversible. The carbon dot/anthraquinone-polydiacetylene platform is inexpensive, easy to fabricate, and consists of environmentally friendly materials.  相似文献

Within a simple mean-field model (self-consistent Hartree approximation) we discuss the possibility of polaron formation on a molecular wire as a mechanism for negative differential resistance (NDR), switching, and/or hysteresis in the I-V characteristic of molecular junctions. This mechanism differs from earlier proposed mechanisms of charging and conformational change. The polaron model captures the essential physics and provides qualitative correspondence with experimental data. The importance of active redox centers in the molecule is indicated.  相似文献
