Copper bioavailability from breakfasts containing tea. Influence of the addition of milk

The influence of drinking tea on copper bioavailability is unclear, particularly when tea is consumed with food. A breakfast meal containing white bread, margarine, strawberry jam, cheese and tea, with or without milk, was digested in; vitro and the dialysis of copper investigated. Reference breakfasts were prepared with water and water with milk. Copper dialysability (percentage of copper dialysed) was markedly increased by tea. The influence of adding milk to tea was not significant. A second study was carried out in rats using the breakfasts containing tea and water. They were spiked with ⁶⁴Cu and given orally to the animals in a single dose. Whole-body ⁶⁴Cu retention was measured over a 4-day period after administration. In order to determine the true absorption of ⁶⁴Cu a control group of rats received the dose intraperitioneally. The results in vivo indicate a tendency to higher absorption and retention of ⁶⁴Cu with tea. Liver ⁶⁴Cu retention was significantly elevated by tea. Therefore, the presence of tea in a breakfast meal favours the formation of soluble low-molecular-weight ligands which can be absorbed and retained by rats. The concomitant increase in liver copper retetition may be associated with higher bioavailability and/or lower copper mobilisation.     

Dysprosium doped Ga:La:S glass for an efficient optical fibreamplifier operating at 1.3 μm

The authors present experimental results which indicate that a Dy ³⁺-doped Ga:La:S glass fibre amplifier may be operated efficiently at 1.3 μm with an optimum device length significantly shorter than a comparable Pr³⁺-doped glass fibre amplifier. Moreover, the efficiency exceeds that obtained from the Pr³⁺-doped ZBLAN devices currently available     

Measurements to distinguish fuel elements with and without thorium content by gammaspectrometry in hot cells

The T1208 inventory in a HTR fuel element is transmuted from Th232. By measuring the T1208 gamma radiation in a suitable scan configuration it is possible to distinguish fuel elements with and without Thorium contents non-destructively even after a long cooling time.     

Crack growth measurements on components under cyclic loading: comparison of different methods

The cyclic crack growth behaviour was measured by means of d.c. potential drop, a.c. potential drop, ultrasonic and crack-opening displacement (COD) methods. The methods were applied to component tests on straight pipes with an outer diameter of approximately 800 mm and a wall thickness of approximately 50 mm. The pipes were subjected to constant internal pressure (about 15 MPa) and either an alternating (or pulsating) or a quasi-static bending moment using d.c. potential drop, a.c. potential drop, ultrasonic and flaw-opening (COD) methods. The efficiency of the particular methods has been proved by comparison with fractographical analysis of the fracture surfaces.     

Sub-100 fs Kerr lens modelocked Cr4+:YAG laser

Sub-100 fs pulse generation from a Kerr lens modelocked Cr⁴⁺ :YAG laser has been demonstrated for the first time, yielding femtosecond pulses tunable from 1.49 to 1.56 μm with pulses as short as 90 fs obtained at 1.53 μm     

0.2 μm AlSb/InAs HEMTs with 5 V gate breakdown voltage

DC and microwave measurements on AlSb/InAs HEMTs with a gate length of 0.21 μm are reported. The reverse gate characteristics exhibit relatively low gate leakage current and gate-drain breakdown voltages as high as 5 V. Equivalent circuit modelling yields an f_T of 110 GHz after removal of the gate bonding pad capacitance. The bias dependence of f_max is examined indicating a significant reduction in the unilateral gain due to impact ionisation     

Trellis-coded direct-sequence spread-spectrum communications

This paper considers the application of trellis coding techniques to direct-sequence spread-spectrum multiple-access (DS/SSMA) communication. The unique feature of the trellis codes considered is that they are constructed over the set of possible signature sequences rather than over some standard 2-D signal constellation. The resulting codes have a small number of signals per dimension. We present several examples of these trellis codes, and suggest possible methods of implementation. We also present a detailed error analysis for this system, which employs techniques developed by Lehnert and Pursley (1987, 1989)) to accurately model the multiple access interference. We generate numerical results for several examples and conclude that the proposed trellis coded systems yield significant performance improvements over binary antipodal DS/SSMA systems. In addition, the new trellis codes perform better than standard error control techniques with the same complexity and code rate. Analytic results are verified with simulations
