Effects of allixin, a phytoalexin of garlic, and its analogues were studied on the survival and morphology of primary cultured neurons from fetal rat brain. Addition of allixin (1-100 ng/ml) to medium significantly promoted the survival of neurons derived from various regions of brain and increased the number of branching points per axon in hippocampal neurons. Allixin, however, was cytotoxic at higher concentrations (>1 microg/ml). Among the analogues of allixin, 2,6-dimethyl-3-hydroxy-4H-pyran-4-one (DHP) possessed potent neurotrophic activity at concentrations over 10 ng/ml without any obvious cytotoxicity up to 10 microg/ml. DHP also retained the activity to promote axonal branching. These results indicate that DHP is a novel exogenous low molecular weight neurotrophic substance without apparent cytotoxicity. This compound may be a useful prototype leading chemical for developing therapeutic and/or prophylactic drugs for neurodegenerative disorders. 相似文献

Results are presented of a study of the feasibility realizing a real-time information retrieval service operating between different worldwide videotex systems by means of gateway facilities that use conversion of data syntax and processing of the videotex information structure. Two separate evaluations were carried out, both using response time as the performance criterion. One was for communication processes at both of two gateways, and the other was for data syntax conversion at the local host. Both approaches are considered as kernel functions in the gateway system. Summary
Introduction of simple alkyl groups at the C-2 nitrogen of chitin and some properties of the resulting N-alkyl-chitins have been examined. Chitosan was fully deacetylated and treated with three kinds of aldehydes, formaldehyde,
acetaldehyde, and pentanal. The Schiff bases of chitosan, whose extents of substitution were dependent on the amount of aldehydes,
were reduced with sodium cyanoborohydride to N-alkylated chitosans. The N-alkyl-chitosans were then transformed into the corresponding N-alkyl-chitins by acetylation with acetic anhydride followed by transesterification to remove partly formed O-acetyl groups. The resulting N-methyl-, ethyl-, and pentyl-chitins were amorphous and showed improved affinity for organic solvents.

Several organosulfur compounds found in garlic extract promoted the survival of rat hippocampal neurons in vitro. From the analysis of structure-activity relationship, thioallyl group in these compounds is essential for the manifestation of neurotrophic activity. S-Allyl-L-cysteine (SAC), one of the organosulfur compounds having thioallyl group in garlic extract, also promoted the axonal branching of cultured neurons. It is shown that propagation delay time in CMIS (complementary metal insulator semiconductor field effect transistor) inverters is strongly affected by dielectric constant nonuniformity in gate dielectrics caused by the phase separation in silicate films. Influences of such nonuniformity on load capacitance are studied by analytical calculations based on a physical model which takes polarization into account. It is newly found that load capacitances are affected by the phase separation in qualitatively different ways, depending on the average metal concentration of their dielectric films. An experimental result is compared with those calculations. Influences of such nonuniformity on current drivability are studied by 3-dimensional device simulations. It is also newly found that such nonuniformity affects load capacitance and current drivability in different ways, resulting in an increase in propagation delay time of CMIS inverters for all metal concentrations studied. This article deals with preparations of fine particles of metallocene copolymers by emulsifierfree emulsion polymerization of vinylferrocene (VFc), ferrocenylmethyl methacrylate (FMMA), 1-ferrocenylethyl methacrylate (1-FEMA), 2-ferrocenylethyl methacrylate (2-FEMA), and 1-ruthenocenylethyl methacrylate (1-REMA) with acrylonitrile (AN), styrene (St), and methyl methacrylate (MMA) in water/ethanol medium. As a result, spherical copolymer particles containing metallocene derivatives have been successfully synthesized in the particle size of ca. 120 to 600 nm. In recent time, a great deal of research effort has been directed toward promptly facilitating post-disaster communication by using wireless mesh networks (WMNs). WMN technology has been considered to be effectively exploited for this purpose as it provides multi-hop communication through an access network comprising wireless mesh routers, which are connected to the Internet through gateways (GWs). One of the critical challenges in using WMNs for establishing disaster-recovery networks is the issue of distributing traffic among the users in a balanced manner in order to avoid congestion at the GWs. To overcome this issue, we envision a disaster zone WMN comprising a network management center. First, we thoroughly investigate the problem of traffic load balancing amongst the GWs in our considered disaster zone WMN. Then, we develop traffic load distribution techniques from two perspectives. Our proposal from the first perspective hinges upon a balanced distribution of the bandwidth to be allocated per user. On the other hand, our second perspective considers the dynamic (i.e., varying) bandwidth demands from the disaster zone users that requires a more practical and refined distribution of the available bandwidth by following an intelligent forecasting method. The thermal boundary resistance between an individual carbon nanotube and a Au surface was measured using a microfabricated hot-film sensor. We used both closed and open-ended multi-walled carbon nanotubes and obtained thermal boundary resistance values of 0.947-1.22 × 10(7) K W(-1) and 1.43-1.76 × 10(7) K W(-1), respectively. Considering all uncertainties, including the contact area, the thermal boundary conductances per unit area were calculated to be 8.6 × 10(7)-2.2 × 10(8) W m(-2) K(-1) for c-axis orientation and 4.2 × 10(8)-1.2 × 10(9) W m(-2) K(-1) for the a-axis. The trend in these values agrees with the predicted conductance dependence on the interface orientation of anisotropic carbon-based materials.
