The routines of information work are commonplace yet difficult to characterize. Although cognitive models have successfully characterized routine tasks within which there is little variation, a large body of ethnomethodological research has identified the inherent nonroutineness of routines in information work. We argue that work does not fall into discrete classes of routine versus nonroutine; rather, task performance lies on a continuum of routineness, and routineness metrics are important to the understanding of workplace multitasking. In a study of 10 information workers shadowed for 3 whole working days each, we utilize the construct of working sphere to model projects/tasks as a network of humans and artifacts. Employing a statistical technique called T-pattern analysis, we derive measures of routineness from these real-world data. In terms of routineness, we show that information workers experience archetypes of working spheres. The results indicate that T-patterns of interactions with information and computational media are important indicators of facets of routineness and that these measures are correlated with workers' affective states. Our results are some of the first to demonstrate how regular temporal patterns of media interaction in tasks are related to stress. These results suggest that designs of systems to facilitate so-called routine work should consider the degrees to which a person's working spheres fall along varying facets of routineness. 相似文献

The goal of Grid computing is to integrate the usage of computer resources from cooperating partners in the form of Virtual Organizations (VO). One of its key functions is to match jobs to execution resources efficiently. For interoperability between VOs, this matching operation occurs in resource brokering middleware, commonly referred to as the meta-scheduler or meta-broker. In this paper, we present an approach to a meta-scheduler architecture, combining hierarchical and peer-to-peer models for flexibility and extensibility. Interoperability is further promoted through the introduction of a set of protocols, allowing meta-schedulers to maintain sessions and exchange job and resource state using Web Services. Our architecture also incorporates a resource model that enables an efficient resource matching across multiple Virtual Organizations, especially where the compute resources and state are dynamic. Experiments demonstrate these new functional features across three distributed organizations (BSC, FIU, and IBM), that internally use different job scheduling technologies, computing infrastructure and security mechanisms. Performance evaluations through actual system measurements and simulations provide the insights on the architecture’s effectiveness and scalability. 相似文献

The gene coding for the brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has emerged as an interesting candidate for multiple brain and brain disorder-related phenomena. The primary aim of the present investigation was to consider the relationship between the BDNF Val66Met variant and two phenotypes: compulsive hoarding as a symptom dimension of obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD), and body mass index (BMI). We examined the BDNF gene in a large (N = 301) clinical sample of probands with OCD. Participants were classified as hoarding or nonhoarding using a strict, multimeasure grouping approach. Results revealed that the Val/Val genotype was linked with hoarding classification and more severe hoarding behaviors, as well as greater BMI levels. Hoarding status was also associated with greater BMI scores, with individuals in the hoarding group being far more likely to be classified as obese compared with the nonhoarding group. Our findings may provide a distinct avenue through which hoarding and BMI could be linked. These findings are suggestive of a complex gene, body weight, and psychopathology relationship wherein a primitive, survival “thrifty gene” strategy may be conserved and represented in a subgroup of humans manifesting severe hoarding symptoms. A model for soil bidirectional reflectance distribution functions in visible and reflective infrared wavelengths is introduced and compared to data acquired in the field. The model is based on the representation of soil surfaces by a collection of opaque spheres sitting on a Lambertian horizontal surface. The model is not sensitive to increases in the sphere area index beyond a value of 0.4. For comparison, soil reflectance factor data were acquired on a tilled field from many view directions and for a range of solar directions. The observed reflectance factor distributions were consistent with those predicted by the function; maximum reflectance occurred in the antisolar direction and reflectance decreased with increasing phase angle. Increasing the surface roughness by different tillage methods did not substantially alter the directional anisotropy of the soil reflectance factors. The mechanism by which soya lipoxygenase enzyme action improves the Theological properties of wheat flour doughs during mechanical development in air has been investigated further. Free-lipid extraction, reconstitution and replacement experiments have shown that the rheological effect of lipoxygenase action, which is consistent with an oxidative improvement of the dough proteins and may also result in extended mixing tolerance, only occurred in the presence of an oxidisable, polyunsaturated, free-lipid substrate. Addition of this substrate in an oxidised state (produced either by autoxidation or enzyme-oxidation) to doughs mixed from fat-extracted flour under nitrogen resulted only in a small rheological improvement, greater for the autoxidised than the enzyme-oxidised lipid, but in no way comparable with the large rheological effect of lipoxygenase action during dough mixing in air. Furthermore, the presence of an antioxidant, nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA), during dough development, although greatly inhibiting peroxide formation, only marginally impaired the rheological improvement due to lipoxygenase action. Additional evidence is therefore provided for a coupled oxidation mechanism being responsible for the rheological effect, since lipoxygenase-catalysed oxidation actively occurring in the dough during mixing appears to be the fundamental requirement, irrespective of whether the primary oxidation products lead to lipid peroxides or oxidised NDGA. 相似文献

The long‐term success of photosynthetic organisms has resulted in their global superabundance, which is sustained by their widespread, continual mass‐production of the integral proteins that photocatalyze the chemical processes of natural photosynthesis. Here, a fast, general method to assemble multilayer films composed of one such photocatalytic protein complex, Photosystem I (PSI), onto a variety of substrates is reported. The resulting films, akin to the stacked thylakoid structures of leaves, consist of a protein matrix that is permeable to electrochemical mediators and contain a high concentration of photoelectrochemically active redox centers. These multilayer assemblies vastly outperform previously reported monolayer films of PSI in terms of photocurrent production when incorporated into an electrochemical system, and it is shown that these photocatalytic properties increase with the film thickness. These results demonstrate how the assembly of micron‐thick coatings of PSI on non‐biological substrates yields a biohybrid ensemble that manifests the photocatalytic activity of the film’s individual protein constituents, and represent significant progress toward affordable, biologically‐inspired renewable energy conversion platforms. 相似文献

The location of GaN nanowires is controlled with essentially perfect selectivity using patterned SiNx prior to molecular beam epitaxy growth. Nanowire growth is uniform within mask openings and absent on the mask surface for over 95% of the usable area of a 76 mm diameter substrate. The diameters of the resulting nanowires are controlled by the size of the mask openings. Openings of approximately 500 nm or less produce single nanowires with symmetrically faceted tips. 相似文献

Heritabilities for milk, fat, and protein yields were estimated from first lactation data used for USDA-Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA) genetic evaluations. Contemporary group assignments and standard deviations within herd-year were determined with the procedure used for national evaluations. Pedigree data were included for animals born since 1970; yield data were included for cows born since 1980. Lactation records were divided into four mutually exclusive data sets based on standard deviations. Ranges for standard deviations were chosen so that data sets were approximately equal in size. Method R was used to estimate heritability with 25 different random samples of half of the data for each data set. Because of the large number of Holstein observations, estimates of heritability for Holsteins were based on random subsets of the complete data file; each subset included approximately 5% of the data. Mean heritability estimates increased with standard deviations, and estimates ranged from 0.18 to 0.51 across breeds. Repeatability estimates for milk yield of Holsteins were approximately 0.50 and did not change with standard deviation. These heritability estimates were higher than those previously used in the USDA-DHIA genetic evaluation. Heritability used in the USDA-DHIA genetic evaluation have been increased based on these results. 相似文献
