Periodontitis and atherosclerosis have complex etiologies, genetic and gender predispositions, and potentially share many risk factors-the most significant of which may be smoking status. These diseases also have many pathogenic mechanisms in common. It is becoming increasingly clear that infections and chronic inflammatory conditions such as periodontitis may influence the atherosclerotic process. The severity and chronicity of periodontal disease provides a rich source of subgingival microbial and host response products and effects over a long time period. The objective of this review is to consider the mechanisms whereby diseases such as periodontitis, which is chronic and Inflammatory In nature and initiated by microbial plaque, can predispose to atherosclerosis. In common with periodontal disease. the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis is not completely understood and both diseases are currently under Intensive investigation. Two main processes in particular are worthy of consideration and may provide the link between these 2 diseases, namely the lipopolysaccharide-related responses and the hyperresponsive monocyte phenomenon. Insufficient experimental evidence exists, however, to further support these hypotheses at present and clearly more research is needed on both of these processes and the interrelationships between both diseases.  相似文献

Transesophageal echocardiography is ideally suited for imaging during CPR because high-quality images can be obtained immediately and continuously without interruption of cardiac compression and ventilation. Use of TEE during CPR is increasing to help monitor resuscitative efforts, for diagnosis, to assist in understanding the physiology of blood flow, and for evaluation of new methods of CPR.  相似文献

The amplitude and direction of saccadic eye movements evoked electrically from the dorsomedial frontal cortex (DMFC) of monkeys vary with starting eye position. This observation has been used to argue that the DMFC codes saccadic eye movements in head-centered coordinates. Whether the amplitude and direction of the evoked saccades are also affected by changes in head position has never been demonstrated. Such a result would argue against a head-centered representation, and instead would suggest a representation anchored to another body part. Tests were conducted on rhesus monkeys to determine whether changing the position of the head with respect to the trunk or changing the position of the head with respect to the gravitational axis alters saccadic parameters. The amplitude and direction of saccadic eye movements remained invariant to such manipulations. These findings confirm the claim that the DMFC encodes saccadic eye movements in head-centered coordinates.  相似文献

Orbital/agranular insular (ORB/AI) cortex has been implicated in traditional olfactory learning tasks and social behavior but its precise role in discriminating-learning social odors is not known. Female golden hamsters received aspiration lesions of ORB/AI or dorsomedial (DM) frontal cortex and were tested for their ability to (a) discriminate between odors of individual males in a habituation-discrimination task, (b) show preferences for male over female odors, and (c) scent-mark in response to male odors. Lesioned females readily discriminated between scents of individual males. Neither lesion altered female preferences for male odors. Females with DM lesions showed increased levels of scent marking to male odors, but those with ORB/AI cortex lesions did not differ from controls. Thus, ORB/AI cortex does not appear to be critical for discrimination of odors of individuals or sex or for scent-marking responses based on these discriminations. BACKGROUND: Microencapsulation technology promises new applications such as intelligent microstructures, phase change materials and self‐healing composites. Microcapsule synthesis and characterization have been researched extensively; however, the well‐known polymerization between epoxy resins and carboxylic acids has not been used to prepare microcapsules. RESULTS: Microcapsules were prepared by interfacial polymerization of an oil‐in‐water emulsion which contained a commercial epoxy resin and multifunctional carboxylic acids. The microcapsules obtained were characterized using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Experiments performed at lower stirring rates led to larger microcapsules, in the range 100–400 µm, while higher stirring rates resulted in microcapsules in the range 10–50 µm. CONCLUSIONS: Microcapsules can be prepared by interfacial polymerization of epoxy resins, an extensively studied and widely used class of polymers. By means of NMR characterization we gained insight into the mechanism of polymerization at the interface wherein products coming from the more hindered ring opening as well as from intermolecular transesterification are identified. The effects of several plasticizers in layer-forming polymeric compounds are determined by means of the delayed fluorescence of Pyronine B to analyse the interactions between the plasticizers and polymers. It was found that small concentrations of the plasticizers harden the polymeric layers, with which, for instance, the oxygen permeability decreases. This phenomenon is marked especially for cellulose diacetate, for some plasticizers up to 30%.  相似文献

Capillary electrophoresis in dilute hydroxyethyl cellulose is shown to separate supercoiled DNA in the size range 2000-16,000 base pairs. The plasmids migrate more slowly than linear ds-DNA of the same sizes. Plasmid bandwidths are larger than observed for ds-DNA, allowing identification of the type of DNA by bandwidth. The differing dependence of mobility on chain length can be explained by assuming that a plasmid migrates as an elastic rod, while ds-DNA migrates as a wormlike chain.  相似文献
