The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is involved in many complex cognitive functions such as problem-solving, planning, reasoning,
and decision-making. However, the biological mechanisms of these computations are not clear. To understand these mechanisms,
we theoretically consider the experimental result of a path-planning task by Mushiake et al. using a mathematical model referred
to as the potential network model. The simulation results show that our model can take the correct path in most trials, regardless
of the goal positions and the block patterns in the task. Furthermore, our model reproduces the characteristics of the neuronal
activity in both the PFC and the primary motor cortex. This study reveals that although the potential network model is abstract,
it can be useful in modelling higher brain functions.

We report a series of studies that assess the feasibility and sensitivity of imaging of herpes virus type one thymidine kinase (HSV1-tk) gene transfer and expression with [124I]-5-iodo-2'-fluoro-1-beta-D-arabinofuranosyluracil ([124I]-FIAU) and positron emission tomography (PET) and the ability of [124I]-FIAU-PET imaging to discriminate different levels of HSV1-tk gene expression. Studies were performed in rats bearing multiple s.c. tumors derived from W256 rat carcinoma and RG2 rat glioma cells. In the first set, we tested the sensitivity of [124I]-FIAU-PET imaging to detect low levels of HSV1-tk gene expression after retroviral-mediated gene transfer. HSV1-tk gene transduction of one of preestablished wild-type W256 tumor in each animal was accomplished by direct intratumoral injection of retroviral vector-producer cells (W256-->W256TK* tumors). Tumors produced from W256 and W256TK+ cells served as the negative and positive control in each animal. Highly specific images of [124I]-FIAU-derived radioactivity were obtained in W256TK* tumors (that were transduced in vivo) and in W256TK+ tumors but not in nontransduced wild-type W256 tumors. The level of "specific" incorporated radioactivity in transduced portions of both W256TK* and W256TK+ tumors was relatively constant between 4 and 50 h. In the second set, we tested whether [124I]-FIAU and PET imaging can measure and discriminate between different levels of HSV1-tk gene expression. Multiple s.c. tumors were produced from wild-type RG2 cells and stably transduced RG2TK cell lines that express different levels of HSV1-tk. A highly significant relationship between the level of [124I]-FIAU accumulation [% injected dose/g and incorporation constant (Ki)] and an independent measure of HSV1-tk expression (sensitivity of the transduced tumor cells to ganciclovir, IC50) was demonstrated, and the slope of this relationship was defined as a sensitivity index. We have demonstrated for the first time that highly specific noninvasive images of HSV1-tk expression in experimental animal tumors can be obtained using radiolabeled 2'-fluoro-nucleoside [124I]-FIAU and a clinical PET system. The ability to image the location (distribution) of gene expression and the level of expression over time provides new and useful information for monitoring clinical gene therapy protocols in the future. 相似文献

The algorithm used to retrieve the cloud effective particle radius from the 3.7 μm band was adapted to the corresponding channel of the Japanese Advanced Meteorological Imager (JAMI) flown on board the Multi-functional Transport Satellite (MTSAT) geostationary platform. Snapshot comparisons with spatially well-resolved retrievals from the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) instruments flown on the Terra polar platforms show qualitative agreement with MTSAT retrievals. The results of analysing daytime variation from eastern Asia to the northwest Pacific Ocean show that, not only is the effective particle radius smaller in continental clouds than in maritime clouds, but the daytime amplitude of the effective particle radius is also greater in continental clouds than in maritime clouds, where the effective particle radius value is approximately constant. 相似文献

We previously reported that the bursa premacularis (BPM), a peculiar vitreous structure located above the macula, contains numerous cells expressing markers of lymphatic endothelial cells, such as podoplanin and LYVE-1. Herein, we examined the expression of lymphatic markers in the Berger’s space (BS), BPM, and vitreous core (VC). BS, BPM, and VC specimens were selectively collected in macular hole and epiretinal membrane patients during vitrectomy and were then immunostained with antibodies for podoplanin, LYVE-1, and fibrillin-1 and -2. By visualization using triamcinolone acetonide, the BS was recognized as a sac-like structure with a septum located behind the lens as well as BPM. Those tissues adhered to the lens or retina in a circular manner by means of a ligament-like structure. Immunostaining showed intense expression of podoplanin and LYVE-1 in the BS. Both BS and BPM stained strongly positive for fibrillin-1 and -2. The VC was faintly stained with antibodies for those lymph-node markers. Our findings indicate that both BS and BPM possibly belong to the lymphatic system, such as lymph nodes, draining excess fluid and waste products into lymphatic vessels in the dura mater of the optic nerve and the ciliary body, respectively, via intravitreal canals. 相似文献

We demonstrate an eight-channel wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) modulator module that monolithically integrates arrayed waveguide gratings and semiconductor optical amplifiers and electroabsorption optical modulators arrays. The compact module can generate individual optical signals for each WDM channel with low optical and electrical crosstalk. We show two configurations for the narrow channel spacing of 25 GHz and high throughput of beyond 80 Gb/s. Combining this WDM modulator with a multi-wavelength light source is a promising approach to creating a compact WDM optical transmitter. 相似文献

Pellets of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET; 0.48–1.92 g) were heated in anhydrous ethylene glycol (EG; 5 mL) with 2-equivs of NaOH at 150°C for 80 min or 180°C for 15 min to convert them quantitatively to disodium terephthalate (Na2-TPA) and EG. The disodium salt was precipitated quantitatively in pure state from the EG solution and separated readily. The other product EG, being the same component to the solvent, remains in the solution and can be obtained after distillation as a part of the solvent. The rate of decomposition was significantly accelerated by the addition of ethereal solvents to EG, such as dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, and dimethoxyethane. The reaction system is simple; no water and no extra reagent other than NaOH and EG are used. A semiconductor monolithic wavelength selective router is proposed. An electrically tunable grating switch is monolithically integrated with a directional coupler. The effect of sidelobe on the demultiplexing characteristics of the router is investigated, and it is shown that the sidelobes degrade the wavelength crosstalk and introduce a power penalty for demultiplexing characteristics. A phase-synchronized sampled grating is introduced to suppress the sidelobes, and wavelength router switching is observed in this structure. The extinction ratio is over 10 dB at a current injection of 25 mA. Using this structure, power-penalty-free wavelength selective routing at a 2.5 Gb/s wavelength-division-multiplexed NRZ random pattern is demonstrated 相似文献

The effects of formation of intermediate semiconductor layers at p-ZnSe/metals interfaces on carrier transport mechanisms
were studied by comparing contacts prepared by the deposition and annealing (DA) technique or the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE)
technique. Current density vs voltage (J-V) curves of the MBE contact with a p-ZnSe/p-ZnTe superlattice intermediate layer
showed ohmic behavior. However, J-V curves of the DA contact with a ZnTe intermediate layer showed rectifying behavior. The
difference of the electrical properties between these two contacts was due to existence of a highly resistive intermediate
layer with highly dense defects in the DA contact and a low resistance p-type conductive intermediate layer with relatively
small densities of crystalline defects in the MBE contacts. From the present results, it was concluded that formation of the
highly resistive semiconductor layer with dense crystalline defects prevented the DA contact to transit from non-ohmic J-V

Boron nitride (BN) nanohorns were synthesized by an arc-melting method, and atomic structure models for BN nanohorns with tetragonal BN rings were proposed from high-resolution electron microscopy and image calculation. Stability and electronic structures of the BN nanohorns were investigated by molecular orbital calculations, comparing with carbon nanohorns. The calculation showed that multi-walled BN nanohorns would be stabilized by the stacking of BN nanohorns. An energy gap of BN nanohorn was calculated to be 0.80 eV, which is lower compared to those of BN clusters and nanotubes. 相似文献
