The nature of polymer deformation depends on the ability of the chain segments to respond to the applied load at the imposed loading rate. When the polymer response time is significantly longer than the loading duration, the polymer responds in a brittle manner. Polystyrene, for example, is a brittle, glassy solid at room temperature and absorbs very little energy during deformation. Here we show unexpected, thickness and strain-rate-dependent deformation processes in thin polystyrene films at extreme axisymmetric tensile deformation rates. The impact of a supersonic micro-projectile initiates crazing, yielding, and adiabatic heating leading to extensive plastic flow of a load-bearing viscoelastic melt prior to perforation and film rupture. The less entangled, more mobile near-surface regions of these freestanding films favorably modify these processes, increasing the specific energy absorption as thickness decreases at the highest impact velocity. This results in unprecedented energy absorption at extreme strain rates in what is normally considered a brittle material. 相似文献

The rheological parameters required to print viscoelastic nanoparticle suspensions toward tough elastomers via Digital Light Synthesis (DLS) (an inverted projection stereolithography system) are reported. With a model material of functionalized silica nanoparticles suspended in a poly(dimethylsiloxane) matrix, the rheological-parameters-guided DLS can print structures seven times tougher than those formed from the neat polymers. The large yield stress and high viscosity associated with these high concentration nanoparticle suspensions, however, may prevent pressure-driven flow, a mechanism essential to stereolithography-based printing. Thus, to better predict and evaluate the printability of high concentration nanoparticle suspensions, the boundary of rheological properties compatible with DLS is defined using a non-dimensional Peclet number (Pe). Based on the proposed analysis of rheological parameters, the border of printability at standard temperature and pressure (STP) is established by resin with a silica nanoparticle mass fraction (ϕsilica) of 0.15. Above this concentration, nanoparticle suspensions have Pe > 1 and are not printable. Beyond STP, the printability can be further extended to ϕsilica = 0.20 via a heating module with lower shear rate to reduce the Pe < 1. The printed rubber possesses even higher toughness (Γ ≈ 155 kJ m−3), which is 40% higher over that of ϕsilica = 0.15. 相似文献

Random load fatigue crack growth tests have been conducted on a low alloy steel, Q1N, under varying conditions of mean stress and probability density function (pdf). The results show that Q1N is insensitive to the pdf, but that a mean stress effect is measurable. Methylglyoxal is associated with a broad spectrum of biological effects, including cytostatic and cytotoxic activities. It is detoxified by the glyoxylase system or by its reduction to lactaldehyde by methylglyoxal reductase. We show that methylglyoxal reductase (NADPH-dependent) is encoded by GRE2 (YOL151w). We associated this activity with its gene by partially purifying the enzyme and identifying by MALDI-TOF the proteins in candidate bands on SDS-PAGE gels whose relative intensities correlated with specific activity through three purification steps. The candidate proteins were then purified using a glutathione-S-transferase tag that was fused to them, and tested for methylglyoxal reductase activity. The advantage of this approach is that only modest protein purification is required. Our approach should be useful for identifying many of the genes that encode the metabolic pathway enzymes that have not been associated with a gene (about 275 in S. cerevisiae, by our estimate). 相似文献

Why do sexually appealing women often attract derogation and aggression? According to terror management theory, women's sexual allure threatens to increase men's awareness of their corporeality and thus mortality. Accordingly, in Study 1 a subliminal mortality prime decreased men's but not women's attractiveness ratings of alluring women. In Study 2, mortality salience (MS) led men to downplay their sexual intent toward a sexy woman. In Study 3, MS decreased men's interest in a seductive but not a wholesome woman. In Study 4, MS decreased men's but not women's attraction to a sexy opposite-sex target. In Study 5, MS and a corporeal lust prime increased men's tolerance of aggression toward women. The authors explored the contribution of individual differences in attachment orientations to the experience of sexual intercourse and its association with relationship quality. In Study 1, 500 participants completed self-report scales of attachment orientations and sexual experience. The findings indicated that whereas attachment anxiety was associated with an ambivalent construal of sexual experience, attachment avoidance was associated with more aversive sexual feelings and cognitions. In Study 2, 41 couples reported on their attachment orientations and provided daily diary measures of sexual experiences and relationship interactions for a period of 42 days. Results showed that attachment anxiety amplified the effects of positive and negative sexual experiences on relationship interactions. In contrast, attachment avoidance inhibited the positive relational effect of having sex and the detrimental relational effects of negative sexual interactions. The authors discuss the possibility that attachment orientations are associated with different sex-related strategies and goals within romantic relationships.
