Syncillin in bacterial skin diseases

A multicentric open clinical trial was carried out by 8 practising specialists in dermatology or paediatrics in patients with bacterial skin diseases who were subjected to a systemic therapy with Syncillin (=Azidocillin). The Syncillin presentation for adults and schoolchildren was tablets of 750 mg each, and sachets of 125 mg or 250 mg for infants. The duration of treatment was 10 days. The parameters analyzed were bacteriological findings and the clinical course of disease. 71 (=74%) of the 96 patients included in this study were considered as cured, 21 (=22%) as improved and 4 patients (=4%) as unchanged. Bacterial identification was still positive in 10 cases after the termination of treatment. However, this did not preclude the assessments of "cured' (3 cases) or "improved' (7 cases). The tolerance of the preparation was considered as "very good' or "good' in 91 and as "poor' in 5 patients. The most common side effects were nausea and diarrhoea. Exanthema was observed in 2 cases. None of these side effects, however, made a discontinuation of medication necessary. The era of rational and well-directed chemotherapy enables good therapeutic approach also to bacterial skin diseases.     

Improvement in the volume efficiency of multilayered ceramic capacitors (MLCCs)

An attempt was made to improve the conventional lamination process in the multilayered ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) fabrication by adapting a solvent treatment on the BaTiO₃ green sheets. During the lamination process, additional particle rearrangement in the BaTiO₃ green block was stimulated by solvent treatment. This rearrangement resulted in a more compact structure of the BaTiO₃ green sheets compared to that obtained through the conventional lamination process. The overall thickness of BaTiO₃/Ni/BaTiO₃ laminates was also reduced after solvent treatment. It is suggested that miniaturization in the fabrication of MLCCs can be improved by adapting a solvent treatment during the lamination process.     

CuO formation control as a function of mixed ratio of Cu-free powders in the synthesis of YBCO superconductors on Cu substrates

YBa₂Cu₃O_x (Y123) superconducting films were fabricated on Cu substrates using a simple screen-printing method, from Cu-free powders (Y₂O₃ and BaCO₃). In the process, CuO, which causes superconducting properties of Y123 films to deteriorate, was formed on the film surface. By varying the atomic ratio of Y to Ba (Y:Ba = 1:1∼1:4), the ratio needed to prevent CuO formation was found for the film surface that had been heat-treated at 980^∘C for 17 s. The film, with the ratio of Y to Ba (Y:Ba = 1:1), is reheat-treated at 930^∘C for 9 min 30 s to form a superconducting Y123 phase. It was possible to prevent CuO formation by controlling the ratio of Cu-free powders in the mixture and to fabricate YBCO superconductors on Cu substrates using a two-step heat-treatment.     

Microstructural and piezoelectric properties of low temperature sintering PMN-PZT ceramics with the amount of Li2CO3 addition

PMN-PZT ceramics doped with Li₂CO₃ and Bi₂O₃ as sintering aids were manufactured in order to develop the low temperature sintering ceramics for multilayer piezoelectric transformer, and their micro structural, dielectric and piezoelectric properties were investigated. The sintering aids were proved to lower the sintering temperature of doped PMN-PZT ceramics due to the effect of LiBiO₂ liquid phase. Optimal values for multilayer piezoelectric transformer application, such as electromechanical coupling factor (k_p) of 0.50, mechanical quality factor (Q_m) of 2264, and dielectric constant (K) of 1216, and curie temperature (T_c) of 317 °C were found at 0.1 wt.% Li₂CO₃ added ceramics sintered at 940 °C.     

Point fingerprint: a new 3-D object representation scheme

This paper proposes a new, efficient surface representation method for surface matching. A feature carrier for a surface point, which is a set of two-dimensional (2-D) contours that are the projections of geodesic circles on the tangent plane, is generated. The carrier is named point fingerprint because its pattern is similar to human fingerprints and plays a role in discriminating surface points. Corresponding points on surfaces from different views are found by comparing their fingerprints. The point fingerprint is able to carry curvature, color, and other information which can improve matching accuracy, and the matching process is faster than 2-D image comparison. A novel candidate point selection method based on the fingerprint irregularity is introduced. Point fingerprint is successfully applied to pose estimation of real range data.     

Comprehensibility of universal healthcare symbols for wayfinding in healthcare facilities

Healthcare facilities are often complex and overwhelming for visitors, and wayfinding in healthcare facilities can be challenging. As there is an increasing number of global citizens who travel to seek medical care in another country, it is critical to make wayfinding easy for visitors who are not familiar with the language in a foreign country. Among many wayfinding aids, symbols are helpful for those visitors who have limited ability to understand written language. This study tested universal healthcare symbols in the United States, South Korea, and Turkey to compare the comprehension of symbols cross-country and identify predictors of the correct comprehension. To explore statistically significant relationships between symbol comprehension and countries, Pearson's Chi-square tests, logistic regression, and ANOVA were conducted. The test results showed that ten symbols among 14 tested have significant relationship with countries. Results of this study demonstrate that symbol comprehension can be varied significantly in different countries.

Characterization of subtilin KU43 Produced by Bacillus subtilis KU43 isolated from traditional Korean fermented foods

An antimicrobial peptide produced by Bacillus subtilis KU25, KU43, and KU44 was isolated from traditional Korean fermented foods and characterized. It was named as subtilin KU25, KU43, and KU44. Subtilin KU25, KU43, and KU44 were sensitive against α-chymotrypsin, protease XIII, and various proteinase enzymes, respectively. B. subtilis KU43 was selected as the producer with the broadest antimicrobial spectrum. Subtilin KU43 was stable at a pH range of 3 to 9 for 4 h, and withstood exposure to temperatures of 50–90°C for 30 min. The mode of inhibition against Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 15313 involved a bactericidal effect by a reduction in the cell numbers and breakage of the indicator cell membranes. The molecular mass of subtilin KU43 was measured at approximately 3.5 kDa. These results demonstrate the development of novel strains from traditional Korean fermented foods, and illustrate the possibility that some of these strains might generate a natural preservative compound.
