A new location update strategy for personal communication services (PCS) networks and its implementation using a genetic algorithm are proposed. Most of the practical cellular mobile systems partition a geographical region into location areas (LAs) and users are made to update on entering a new LA. The main drawback of this scheme is that it does not consider the individual user mobility and call arrival patterns. Combining these factors with the LAbased approach, we propose an optimal update strategy which determines whether or not a user should update in each LA, and minimizes the average location management cost derived from a userspecific mobility model and call generation pattern. The location management cost optimization problem is also elegantly solved using a genetic algorithm. Detailed simulation experiments are conducted to capture the effects of mobility and callarrival patterns on the location update strategy. The conclusion from this work is that skipping location updates in certain LAs leads to the minimization of the overall location management cost for a user with a specific mobility pattern and even with moderately high call arrival rate. 相似文献

The system-on-a-package (SOP) paradigm proposes a package level integration of digital, RF/analog and opto-electronic functions to address future convergent microsystems. Two major components of SOP fabrication are sequential build-up of multiple layers (4–8) of conducting copper patterns with interlayer dielectrics on a board and multiple ICs flip-chip bonded on the top layer. A wide range of passives, wave-guides and other RF and opto-electronic components buried within the dielectric layers provide the multiple functions on a single microminiaturized platform.The routing of future nanoscale ICs with 10,000+ I/Os require multiple build-up layers of ultra fine board feature sizes of 10 m lines/space widths and 40 m pad diameters. Current FR4 boards cannot achieve this build-up technology because of dimensional instability during processing. These boards also undergo high warpage during the sequential build-up process which limits the fine-line lithography and also causes misalignment between the vias and their corresponding landing pads. In addition, the CTE mismatch between the silicon die and the board leads to IC-package interconnect reliability concerns, particularly in future fine-pitch assemblies where underfilling becomes complicated and expensive.This work reports experimental and analytical work comparing the performance of organic and novel ceramic boards for SOP requirements. The property requirements as deduced from these results indicate that a high stiffness and tailorable CTE from 2–4 ppm/C is required to enable SOP microminiaturized board fabrication and assembly without underfill. The structure of twin walls and their interaction with defects has important implications for the behaviour of a variety of materials including ferroelectric, ferroelastic, co-elastic and superconducting crystals. Here, we present a method for investigating the structure of twin walls with nanometre-scale resolution. In this method, the surface topography measured using atomic force microscopy is compared with candidate displacement fields, and this allows for the determination of the twin-wall thickness and other structural features. Moreover, analysis of both complete area images and individual line-scan profiles provides essential information about local mechanisms of twin-wall broadening, which cannot be obtained by existing experimental methods. The method is demonstrated in the ferroelectric material PbTiO(3), and it is shown that the accumulation of point defects is responsible for significant broadening of the twin walls. One approach to aberration compensation of an imaging system is to introduce a suitable phase mask at the aperture plane of an imaging system. We utilize this principle for the compensation of astigmatism. A suitable polarization mask used on the aperture plane together with a polarizer-retarder combination at the input of the imaging system provides the compensating polarization-induced phase steps at different quadrants of the apertures masked by different polarizers. The aberrant phase can be considerably compensated by the proper choice of a polarization mask and suitable selection of the polarization parameters involved. This study examined the spatial distribution of selected biochemical and mechanical properties along the length of carp rib bone. Carp rib bone was chosen because of its unusually high osteocalcin content relative to other extractable proteins. The amount of osteocalcin was significantly lower (p<0.01) at the most distal section, relative to all other sections. The amount of phosphate (p<0.05) and the elastic modulus in the longitudinal plane (p<0.0001) were found to be significantly higher in the most distal section, relative to the most proximal section. There was no significant difference in the calcium distribution, molar Ca/P ratio, or elastic modulus in the transverse plane. It was speculated that the distal section contains less mature bone. The methods illustrate the potential usefulness of nanoindentation to characterize the mechanical properties of bone, relative to its biochemical composition. © 2001 Kluwer Academic Publishers 相似文献

Qualitative assessment of the overall clinical status of the subject and characterization of complex cardiovascular dynamics from digital blood volume pulsations measured noninvasively using a photo-plethysmographic device is addressed. A novel concept is employed to detect the dominant nonsinusoidal periodicity embedded in the data series and to extract the associated periodic component. The detection and the extraction of periodic component is performed with moving window to accommodate the variations of the physiological oscillations. The covariance matrix formed by the gradually varying pattern is used as a simple measure of qualitative assessment. Further, the characterization of the underlying system in the light of nonlinear dynamical analysis is also presented. The stable subjects are shown to behave as a low-dimensional system whereas the diseased subjects exhibit comparatively high dimensional activity. 相似文献

We demonstrate a monolithically integrated laser-waveguide device implemented with InGaAs/GaAs quantum dot heterostructures grown on silicon by molecular beam epitaxy. Focused-ion-beam (FIB) etching is utilized to form high-quality laser mirrors for feedback and grooves for coupling and electrical isolation. Based on a transmission matrix and a generalized beam propagation approach in terms of intensity moments and Gouy phase shifts, a self-consistent model is developed to estimate the reflectivity and coupling coefficient at etched grooves and optimize these parameters for real devices. High-quality FIB-etched facets with a reflectivity of R~0.28 and efficient coupling with coupling coefficients of up to 30% for well-defined grooves have been achieved. 相似文献
