The Internet is a large, heterogeneous system operating at very high speeds and consisting of a large number of users. Researchers use a suite of tools and techniques in order to understand the performance of complex networks like the Internet: measurements, simulations, and deployments on small to medium-scale testbeds. This work considers a novel addition to this suite: a class of methods to scale down the topology of the Internet that enables researchers to create and observe a smaller replica, and extrapolate its performance to the expected performance of the larger Internet. This is complementary to the work of Psounis, 2003, where the authors presented a way to scale down the Internet in time, by creating a slower replica of the original system. The key insight that we leverage in this work is that only the congested links along the path of each flow introduce sizable queueing delays and dependencies among flows. Hence, one might hope that the network properties can be captured by a topology that consists of the congested links only. Using extensive simulations with transmission control protocol (TCP) traffic and theoretical analysis, we show that it is possible to achieve this kind of performance scaling even on topologies the size of the CENIC backbone (that provides Internet access to higher education institutions in California). A desirable feature in spatio-temporal databases is the ability to answer future queries, based on the current data characteristics (reference position and velocity vector). Given a moving query and a set of moving objects, a future query asks for the set of objects that satisfy the query in a given time interval. The difficulty in such a case is that both the query and the data objects change positions continuously, and therefore we can not rely on a given fixed reference position to determine the answer. Existing techniques are either based on sampling, or on repetitive application of time-parameterized queries in order to provide the answer. In this paper we develop an efficient method in order to process nearest-neighbor queries in moving-object databases. The basic advantage of the proposed approach is that only one query is issued per time interval. The time-parameterized R-tree structure is used to index the moving objects. Over the past 10 years, significant scientific effort has been dedicated to the problem of three‐dimensional (3‐D) surface reconstruction for structural systems. However, the critical area of marine structures remains insufficiently studied. The research presented here focuses on the problem of 3‐D surface reconstruction in the marine environment. This paper summarizes our hardware, software, and experimental contributions on surface reconstruction over the past few years (2008–2011). We propose the use of off‐the‐shelf sensors and a robotic platform to scan marine structures both above and below the waterline, and we develop a method and software system that uses the Ball Pivoting Algorithm (BPA) and the Poisson reconstruction algorithm to reconstruct 3‐D surface models of marine structures from the scanned data. We have tested our hardware and software systems extensively in Singapore waters, including operating in rough waters, where water currents are around 1–2 m/s. We present results on construction of various 3‐D models of marine structures, including slowly moving structures such as floating platforms, moving boats, and stationary jetties. One of the major design problems in the context of manufacturing systems is the well-known Buffer Allocation Problem (BAP). This problem arises from the cost involved in terms of space requirements on the production floor and the need to keep in mind the decoupling impact of buffers in increasing the throughput of the line. Production line designers often need to solve the Buffer Allocation Problem (BAP), but this can be difficult, especially for large production lines, because the task is currently highly time consuming. Designers would be interested in a tool that would rapidly provide the solution to the BAP, even if only a near optimal solution is found, especially when they have to make their decisions at an operational level (e.g. hours). The proposed survey discusses the topic of community detection in the context of Social Media. Community detection constitutes
a significant tool for the analysis of complex networks by enabling the study of mesoscopic structures that are often associated
with organizational and functional characteristics of the underlying networks. Community detection has proven to be valuable
in a series of domains, e.g. biology, social sciences, bibliometrics. However, despite the unprecedented scale, complexity
and the dynamic nature of the networks derived from Social Media data, there has only been limited discussion of community
detection in this context. More specifically, there is hardly any discussion on the performance characteristics of community
detection methods as well as the exploitation of their results in the context of real-world web mining and information retrieval
scenarios. To this end, this survey first frames the concept of community and the problem of community detection in the context
of Social Media, and provides a compact classification of existing algorithms based on their methodological principles. The
survey places special emphasis on the performance of existing methods in terms of computational complexity and memory requirements.
It presents both a theoretical and an experimental comparative discussion of several popular methods. In addition, it discusses
the possibility for incremental application of the methods and proposes five strategies for scaling community detection to
real-world networks of huge scales. Finally, the survey deals with the interpretation and exploitation of community detection
