Efficient approximation to calculate time delay and dispersion in linearly chirped periodical microphotonic structures

The Bloch mode propagation through the chirped periodical structure is defined by its local dispersion relation. In a slowly varying structure its time delay is the integral of the local inverse group velocity along the propagation direction. The integration can be strongly simplified for linearly chirped structures if the assumption is made that the local dispersion relation is just a scaled and shifted version of the dispersion relation at the input. This assumption leads to exact solutions for the structures with locally uniaxial deformation and provides a good approximation for arbitrary structures with small chirps. The approach is demonstrated for high index contrast chirped Bragg mirrors and complicated photonic crystal waveguide structures, including coupled waveguides and a slow group velocity waveguide.     

Evidence of flexoelectricity in polymer-dispersed liquid crystals

The linear electro-optic response of polymer-dispersed liquid crystal films has been studied. Micrometer-sized droplets of a cyanobiphenyl mixture (E7) were formed in a Norland Optical Adhesive 65 photopolymer by photopolymerization-induced phase separation. Samples with various average nematic droplet sizes were systematically investigated. The temperature dependence of the first-harmonic electro-optic spectra was obtained. Peculiar peaks and double peaks in the phase spectra were found at temperatures close to the clearing point. Samples with narrow distributions of droplet sizes were characterized by a double peak of the amplitude spectra in the low-frequency range. A flexoelectric origin of the first-harmonic spectra in confined nematic systems is discussed.

Glomerular tip lesions--a newly described glomerular change

Glomerular tip lesion is a newly described histopathological lesion characterized by a focal and segmental widening of the mesangial matrix without hypercellularity together with capillary dilatation, hyaline exudation on the inside of capillary walls and occurrence of vacuolized cells, localized to the peripheral segments of the glomerular tuft. Clinically, these patients have a pronounced nephrotic syndrome with slightly reduced renal function, but terminal renal failure is seldom seen, even after many years of disorder. Two characteristic case histories are presented. The classification of this lesion among the glomerular disorders is at present uncertain. It may represent a transitional form between minor lesion nephritis and focal segmental sclerosis, a separate disorder, or a functional lesion associated with high proteinuria.     

Perspective channel-type reactor with enhanced safety

Following the search for new design solutions to develop within the framework of channel trends the reactor with enhanced safety the Research and Development Institute of Power Engineering has developed the design of the multiloop boiling water reactor (MKER). The MKER enhanced safety is attained when involving the inherent safety features, passive safety systems as well as the accident consequences confinement devices. The design realizes several advantages which are typical of the channel-type reactors, namely: the design desintegration simplifying the manufacture, control, equipment delivery and decreasing, versus the pressure vessel reactors, the accident effect if it proceeds in an explosive manner; small operating reactivity margin and fuel burnup increased due to continuous refuelling; fuel cycle flexibility allowing comparatively easily to adopt the reactor to the conjuncture of the country fuel balance; multiloop circuit of the main coolant which reduces the degree and effect of the accidents connected with the equipment and pipings rupture; monitoring of the channels and fuel assemblies leak-tightness.     

Behavioral effects of centrally administered arginine vasopressin in the rat fetus.

Arginine–8 vasopressin (AVP) was administered to rat fetuses on Embryonic Day 20 via intracisternal (IC), intrahemispheric (IH), or intrathecal (IT) injection. The IC administration of AVP promoted a 4-fold increase in motor activity, including the uncommon patterns of mouthing, licking, and facial wiping. The IH injection of AVP had little effect on fetal behavior, but IT injection resulted in pronounced increases in fetal activity, including mouthing, licking, and wiping. The IT administration of a V? antagonist blocked AVP effects, whereas IH injection potentiated AVP-induced changes in fetal behavior. The IC blockade of V? receptors suppressed facial wiping to a chemosensory fluid (lemon) and reduced oral grasping of an artificial nipple, whereas IH injection of the V? antagonist promoted facial wiping responses and increased grasping of the nipple.
