The conflict between agriculture and urban development is intense in urbanizing areas of the United States and is a problem best resolved at the local level. To effectively develop and apply techniques for preserving farmland, areas of conflict must be identified. This article describes the application of a geographic information system (GIS) for determining the location and level of conflict between agriculture and other forms of human intervention. The procedures used for assessing conflicts are described through a case study in the city of Westfield, Massachusetts and the findings show that GIS can be an effective tool for local decision makers, allowing alternative strategies to be developed and evaluated for agricultural protection.  相似文献

Piezoelectricity is a well‐established property of biological materials, yet its functional role has remained unclear. Here, a mechanical effect of piezoelectric domains resulting from collagen fibril organisation is demonstrated, and its role in tissue function and application to material design is described. Using a combination of scanning probe and nonlinear optical microscopy, a hierarchical structuring of piezoelectric domains in collagen‐rich tissues is observed, and their mechanical effects are explored in silico. Local electrostatic attraction and repulsion due to shear piezoelectricity in these domains modulate fibril interactions from the tens of nanometre (single fibril interactions) to the tens of micron (fibre interactions) level, analogous to modulated friction effects. The manipulation of domain size and organisation thus provides a capacity to tune energy storage, dissipation, stiffness, and damage resistance.  相似文献

With the goal of maximizing the yield of infrared focal plane arrays (IRFPAs), Santa Barbara Research Center’s (SBRC) Infrared Materials Producibility Program (IRMP) has focused on assessing and improving the quality, yield, and throughput of CdZnTe substrates. A baseline detector lot was fabricated to identify the critical drivers of IRFPA yield coming from the substrates and to evaluate the quality and yield of the current vendor base for CdZnTe substrates. Substrate induced defects and impurities that can potentially affect device performance and operability were carefully mapped out in detail on 44 × 67 mm2 size substrates, received from IRMP substrate vendors as well as SBRC. This paper will report on the correlations found between this substrate characterization data base and the IRFPA level defect distributions. Key results from these correlation studies are: (1) extended defects found on the substrates with the Nakagawa etch correlated well with responsivity reduction in the final IRFPA; (2) cross-hatch patterns that were evident in the responsivity map correlated well with similar features seen by x-ray topography on LPE double layers; and (3) a possible correlation of device performance (leakage current at 78K) with copper and lithium impurities in the substrate. Recent initiatives toward improving the quality and yield of the substrate growth process have focused on improving purity in the pre-growth charge preparation, modification of growth parameters to reduce defects and scaling up of the vertical Bridgman growth process from its current 67 mm diameter boule size to 92 mm diameter boules. Promising initial results from the large diameter boule growth process will be shown. The 92 mm diameter CdZnTe boule (6 kg charge) shows two predominant single crystal grains encompassing 75% of boule volume. Defect characterization of boules grown under baseline and modified conditions is discussed.  相似文献

Cu-ZnO based catalysts are the benchmark materials for the low-temperature WGS reaction. However, they present a crucial drawback which limits their application in portable devices: they only work under very low space velocities. In this study, we have developed a series of multicomponent Cu-ZnO catalysts able to work at relatively high space velocities with outstanding activity and stability. Different reference supports have been utilised with CeO2-Al2O3 being the most promising system. Overall, this work describes a strategy to design advanced Cu-based catalysts that can overcome the residence time restrictions in the WGS reaction.  相似文献

This project involves the design and installation of a continuous flow reactor which uses solar radiation, an abundant resource in most sub-Saharan countries, to disinfect water supplies. The system was installed at a rural village in Kenya to disinfect surface water collected at a recently constructed micro-dam. The solar reactor uses CPC reflectors which reflect both direct and diffuse solar radiation onto clear pipes through which the requisite water supply flows. The reaction kinetics for the full-scale design had been determined on a variety of pathogenic micro-organisms under both artificial and real sunlight in controlled conditions. The community fully participated in the planning, installation and subsequent operation of the system. The preliminary water quality results indicate that the system is providing a safe source of water for the community. The installation, commissioning and initial use of the system highlights the critical need for community involvement and approval if such interventions are going to be successful in rural areas, alongside the requirements for strategic and technical support.  相似文献

A simulation model of the capacity-acquisition process in a large electricity-supply system is described, and its output is compared with the actual behavior of the system. The model was built to be used in the testing and assessment of alternative capacity-acquisition policies, particularly the demand-forecasting element of such policies. A simple experiment is described that indicates that the performance of the acquisition policy is sensitive to relatively small changes in the forecasting technique employed. The value of the model in corporate planning is considered briefly.  相似文献

Thermolysin is catalytically inactive in mixtures of 10-15 % acetonitrile in aqueous buffer. Unexpectedly, dilution of the inactive enzyme with acetonitrile leads to complete recovery of the catalytic activity in a similar way to dilution with aqueous buffer. Circular dichroism and fluorescence studies of thermolysin in the same solvent mixtures reveal discontinuous changes in the overall secondary and tertiary protein structure that correlate well with the reversible differences in catalytic activity. The spectra on either side of the minimum activity point are different from each other, a fact indicating that the enzyme may be able to access two active conformations which are thermodynamically stable in different solvent environments.  相似文献

The work presented in this paper details the development of a finite element (FE) model of a soccer ball, allowing for a greater understanding of the performance of soccer balls under dynamic conditions that are representative of play. The model consists of composite shell elements that include a hyperelastic strain energy potential equation to define the latex bladder layer and a plane stress orthotropic elastic material model to define the anisotropic woven fabric outer panels. The model was validated through a series of experimental impact tests whereby the ball was impacted normal to a rigid plate at an inbound velocity of approximately 34 ms−1 (76 mph), with each impact recorded using high speed video (HSV) techniques. It was found that the combined effects of ball design and panel material anisotropy resulted in impact properties such as coefficient of restitution, contact time, deformation and the 2D shape taken up by the ball at maximum deformation, to vary with pre-impact ball orientation. The model showed good agreement with the measurements, and its ability to represent the effects of anisotropy in ball design.  相似文献

PURPOSE: Ischemic neurodegeneration contributes to many retinal diseases. An isolated retina model has been used to examine the neuronal cell death induced by deprivation of oxygen and glucose (simulated ischemia) as a model for ischemic disease. METHODS: Neurodegeneration in the isolated chick embryo retina was induced by simulated ischemia and assessed using biochemical (lactate dehydrogenase release) and morphologic (light microscopy) techniques. RESULTS: Simulated ischemia led to lactate dehydrogenase release gradually in a period of 6 to 24 hours. Light microscopic observations demonstrated morphologic cell degeneration well before lactate dehydrogenase release occurred. N-Methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) and non-NMDA receptor blockers individually provided partial protection, and the combination was fully protective. No protection was provided if the antagonists were added after simulated ischemia. When NMDA receptors were blocked by MK-801, cyclothiazide, an inhibitor of desensitization at non-NMDA receptors, enhanced lactate dehydrogenase released after 1 or 2 hours of simulated ischemia. Low concentrations of glucose effectively prevented lactate dehydrogenase release, despite anoxic conditions. CONCLUSIONS: The isolated retina provided a convenient system to characterize quantitatively ischemic cell death. Retinal ischemic neurodegeneration is an excitotoxic process that involves overactivation of NMDA and non-NMDA glutamate receptors. Blockade of both of these receptor subtypes was necessary for complete neuroprotection. Receptor desensitization played a protective role. If even low concentrations of glucose were delivered to an ischemic retina in vitro, substantial neuroprotection could be achieved. This may have implications for the management of acute retinal ischemic episodes.  相似文献

Osteotomy is the well-established treatment of Blount's disease (tibia vara), although the types of fixation used vary considerably. The use of dynamic axial external fixation to stabilize osteotomies for tibia vara until solid union occurs without the use of supplemental casting has not been reported by other authors. From 1985 until the present, we have used osteotomy with dynamic axial external fixation as treatment of 31 tibiae in 23 patients. All osteotomies healed and there was no postoperative loss of correction. There was an average correction of 20 degrees between the pre- and postoperative mechanical axis. Advantages of dynamic axial external fixation include ease of application, adjustability, early weight bearing, the ability to lengthen the extremity, and no second operation for removal of hardware. Based on our results, we believe that dynamic axial external fixation is an excellent form of osteotomy stabilization in the surgical treatment of tibia vara.  相似文献
