Chlamydia pneumoniae, a pathogenic bacteria responsible for respiratory tract infections, is known as the most implicated infectious agent in atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Accumulating evidence suggests that C. pneumoniae-induced oxidative stress may play a critical role in the pathogenesis of CVDs. Indeed, the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) within macrophages, endothelial cells, platelets and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) after C. pneumoniae exposure, has been shown to cause low density lipoprotein oxidation, foam cell formation, endothelial dysfunction, platelet adhesion and aggregation, and VSMC proliferation and migration, all responsible for the typical pathological changes of atherosclerotic plaque. The aim of this review is to improve our insight into C. pneumoniae-induced oxidative stress in order to suggest potential strategies for CVD prevention. Several antioxidants, acting on multi-enzymatic targets related to ROS production induced by C. pneumoniae, have been discussed. A future strategy for the prevention of C. pneumoniae-associated CVDs will be to target chlamydial HSP60, involved in oxidative stress.  相似文献

Ovarian function was compared between nulliparous heifers (n = 29; 10 to 16 mo old) and lactating Holstein cows (n = 31; 55.9 +/- 3.5 d postpartum). Follicular dynamics, corpus luteum growth, and regression, and serum steroid concentrations were evaluated through ultrasonography and daily blood sampling. Most heifers (27 of 29) but only 14 of 31 cows had typical spontaneous estrous cycles after cycles were initiated. Twelve cows had atypical cycles, and 5 became anovulatory during the study. The 12 cows with atypical estrous cycles had low serum estradiol after luteolysis and failed to ovulate the dominant follicle present at luteolysis. Heifers and cows with typical cycles were compared directly. Interovulatory intervals were similar between heifers (22.0 +/- 0.4 d) and cows (22.9 +/- 0.7 d). Those animals had estrous cycles with either 2 (15 heifers; 11 cows), 3 (9 heifers; 2 cows), or 4 follicular waves (3 heifers; 1 cow). Cows ovulated later after luteolysis than heifers (5.2 +/- 0.2 vs. 4.6 +/- 0.1 d, respectively), and had more multiple ovulations (17.9 vs. 1.9%). Maximal serum estradiol concentration preceding ovulation was lower in cows than in heifers (7.9 +/- 0.8 vs. 11.3 +/- 0.6 pg/mL) even though ovulatory follicles were larger in cows (16.8 +/- 0.5 vs. 14.9 +/- 0.2 mm). Similarly, maximal serum progesterone concentration was lower for cows (5.6 +/- 0.5 vs. 7.3 +/- 0.4 ng/mL), whereas maximal volume of luteal tissue was larger for cows than heifers (11,120 +/- 678 vs. 7303 +/- 308 mm3). Thus, higher incidence of reproductive anomalies in lactating cows, such as low conception rate, ovulation failure, delayed ovulation, and multiple ovulations, may be due to lower circulating steroid concentrations in spite of larger ovulatory follicles and luteal structures.  相似文献

Enterococci represent a considerable proportion of the microbiota in Manchego cheeses. In this study, a total of 132 enterococci isolated from good quality Manchego cheeses from two dairies at different ripening times were genotypically characterized and identified using molecular techniques. Representative isolates from the clusters obtained after genotyping were assayed for some enzymatic activities considered to have a potential role in cheese ripening, and for 2,3-butanedione and acetoin production, evaluation of odor intensity and appearance in milk and safety evaluation. Enterococcus faecalis was the predominant specie, accounting for 81.8% of the total isolates, while Enterococcus faecium, Enterococcus hirae and Enterococcus avium were present in low proportions. The number of genotypes involved at each ripening time varied both between dairies and with the ripening times; genotype E. faecalis Q1 being present in almost all the samples from both dairies. Eight isolates showed a higher proteolytic activity and 3 isolates produced high quantities of acetoin-diacetyl, for which reason they are interesting from a technological standpoint. A low antibiotic resistance was found and almost all the strains were susceptible to clinically important antibiotics. On the contrary, only four isolates (E. faecalis C4W1 and N0W5, and E. faecium N32W1 and C16W2) did not harbor some of the virulence genes assayed.  相似文献

Multiparous, nonlactating pregnant cows are negatively affected by heat stress, but the effect of heat stress on more thermotolerant pregnant heifers has received less attention. Our objective was to characterize the effect of late-gestation heat abatement on thermoregulatory responses and subsequent milk production of nulliparous Holstein heifers. Pregnant heifers, blocked by body condition score (BCS) and predicted transmitting ability (PTA) for milk, were enrolled in either heat stress (HT, shade of freestall barn; n = 16) or cooling (CL, shade of freestall barn, water soakers, and fans; n = 15) environments during the last 60 d of pregnancy (~8 weeks). Rectal temperature (RT; thermometer), respiration rate (RR; breaths/min), sweating rate (SR; VapoMeter, Delfin Technologies, Kuopio, Finland), and skin temperature (ST; infrared thermometer) were measured thrice weekly from enrollment to calving. Vaginal temperature (VT; i-button intravaginal device) was measured every 10 min for 7 consecutive days at wk ?8, ?6, ?4, and ?2 relative to calving and averaged hourly. Daily thermoregulatory patterns assessed by SR and ST, were measured every 4 h over a 36-h time interval at wk ?6, ?4, and ?2 relative to calving. Upon calving, milk, protein, and fat yields were recorded twice daily for 15 wk. The average temperature-humidity index (Hobo Pro temperature probe, Onset Computer Corporation, Pocasset, MA) in the barn during the precalving period was 77 (minimum of 72, maximum of 82). Only heifers that gave birth to a female calf (CL = 12, HT = 14) were included in the statistical analysis. In the precalving period, CL heifers had lower RR (44.3 vs. 60.0 ± 1.6 breaths/min), RT (38.7 vs. 38.8 ± 0.04°C), unshaved ST (34.7 vs. 35.3 ± 0.17°C), and unshaved SR (19.0 vs. 35.2 ± 1.9 g/m2h), relative to HT heifers. Additionally, VT was lower in CL heifers during wk ?4, and ?2, specifically during early morning and early afternoon hours. When measured over a 36-h time interval, ST and SR were lower in CL heifers, when compared with HT heifers for all weeks. Notably, ST was reduced overnight and SR was reduced during the daytime. Cooled heifers had higher milk yield (35.8 vs. 31.9 ± 1.4 kg/d), when compared with HT heifers. Similar to multiparous cows, our data indicate that actively cooling heifers in late pregnancy is effective in promoting thermoregulation and results in elevated milk production postcalving.  相似文献

Limonoids are heavily oxygenated, modified triterpenes dominant in Meliaceae and Rutaceae plant families. The term ‘limonoid’ is derived from limonin, which was first identified as the bitter constituent of Citrus seeds in 1841. This group of secondary metabolites exhibits a wide range of biological properties, including anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal, antimalarial, and antiviral activities. Significant progress on the role of limonoids as promising candidates for cancer chemoprevention and/or therapy has been achieved in particular in recent years. The aim of this review article is to discuss the recent developments on limonoids chemical aspects and biological activities with the relationship between structure and activity, supporting the new possibilities for the medicinal and/or nutraceutical use of these compounds.  相似文献

In this study, we reported the studies on a glass–ceramic foam with wollastonite and cristobalite micrometric crystals prepared by sintering a borosilicate glass waste with organic binder as foaming agent. The waste glass, coming from the dismantling of washing machine, was characterized by high CaO content and low-temperature sinterability. The effect of the temperature on the sinter-crystallization ability of the borosilicate glass waste was followed with thermal analysis, heating microscopy, and electron scanning microscopy (ESEM) observations. Additionally, the effect of temperature on the evolution of crystalline phases and density variation was monitored with XRD and density measurements. The softening started at 800°C and crystallization at 845°C to be completed at 900°C with a linear expansion of 38–40% in the range 850–900°C. Wollastonite and cristobalite were identified as crystalline phases in variable proportions dependently upon temperature. No crack evidence was found at high ESEM magnification even though cristobalite crystals were present. The final products showed a total porosity around 78–79% and an apparent density of about 0.5 g/cm3, in line with common porous closed-cell glass foams used for thermal insulation.  相似文献

Template removal is a critical step in the preparation of most molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). The polymer network itself and the affinity of the imprinted cavities for the template make its removal hard. If there are remaining template molecules in the MIPs, less cavities will be available for rebinding, which decreases efficiency. Furthermore, if template bleeding occurs during analytical applications, errors will arise. Despite the relevance to the MIPs performance, template removal has received scarce attention and is currently the least cost-effective step of the MIP development. Attempts to reach complete template removal may involve the use of too drastic conditions in conventional extraction techniques, resulting in the damage or the collapse of the imprinted cavities. Advances in the extraction techniques in the last decade may provide optimized tools. The aim of this review is to analyze the available data on the efficiency of diverse extraction techniques for template removal, paying attention not only to the removal yield but also to MIPs performance. Such an analysis is expected to be useful for opening a way to rational approaches for template removal (minimizing the costs of solvents and time) instead of the current trial-and-error methods.  相似文献

Aminoethylcysteine ketimine decarboxylated dimer is a natural sulfur-containing compound detected in human plasma and urine, in mammalian brain and in many common edible vegetables. Over the past decade many studies have been undertaken to identify its metabolic role. Attention has been focused on its antioxidant properties and on its reactivity against oxygen and nitrogen reactive species. These properties have been studied in different model systems starting from plasma lipoproteins to specific cellular lines. All these studies report that aminoethylcysteine ketimine decarboxylated dimer is able to interact both with reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (hydrogen peroxide, superoxide anion, hydroxyl radical, peroxynitrite and its derivatives). Its antioxidant activity is similar to that of Vitamin E while higher than other hydrophilic antioxidants, such as trolox and N-acetylcysteine.  相似文献
