Antimicrobial and immunological activity of ethanol extracts and fractions from Isopyrum thalictroides

The antimicrobial and immunological properties of ethanol extracts, non-alkaloid, tertiary alkaloid and quaternary alkaloid fractions, obtained from roots and aerial parts of Isopyrum thalictroides were examined. The non-alkaloid fraction from aerial parts inhibited the growth of seven test microorganisms and was the most effective suppressor of classical pathway (CP) complement activity in normal human serum (NHS) and guinea pig serum (GPS). The alkaloid fractions, containing quaternary alkaloids expressed suppressive effect on mitogen-induced splenocyte proliferation. The in vitro antibody response against sheep red blood cells (anti-SRBC) was inhibited by ethanol extracts and quaternary alkaloid fraction. The intraperitoneal (i.p.) application of ethanol extract and tertiary alkaloid fraction from aerial parts showed that they possess in vivo effect on alternative pathway (AP) complement activity, anti-SRBC response and delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH).

Analytical evaluation technique of self-phase-modulation effect onthe performance of cascaded optical amplifier systems

We propose an approximate analytical evaluation technique of self-phase-modulation (SPM) in cascaded optical amplifier systems. The effect of SPM on optical pulse distortion is represented by the increase in the α-parameter of the transmitter. The waveform distortion is approximated by assuming that the pulse is transmitted over a dispersive fiber without nonlinearity. This technique greatly reduces the calculation time, and is especially useful in designing cascaded amplifier systems, evaluating theoretical maximum transmission distance     

Wind power forecasting using advanced neural networks models

In this paper, an advanced model, based on recurrent high order neural networks, is developed for the prediction of the power output profile of a wind park. This model outperforms simple methods like persistence, as well as classical methods in the literature. The architecture of a forecasting model is optimised automatically by a new algorithm, that substitutes the usually applied trial-and-error method. Finally, the online implementation of the developed model into an advanced control system for the optimal operation and management of a real autonomous wind-diesel power system, is presented     

Sensitivity of torsional stress predictions of diesel generatorsets to critical parameter values

In the present paper a new method is presented for the evaluation of torsional stressing of diesel-generator sets consisting of components with uncertain torsional characteristics. A frequency scanning technique is implemented for eigenvalue analysis of the elastic system. Due to the uncertainty of the values of stiffness and damping coefficients, a sensitivity analysis method is also presented, suitable for the evaluation of the range of the mechanical stresses. Special consideration is given to the correct simulation of the coupling to the electric network, including the influence of generator regulators and possible network interactions. An exact formula is extracted for the synchronizing and damping torque coefficients. The method presented was checked in a diesel power station of the autonomous electric system of a Greek island     

Drug Release from Lipogels According to Gelling Conditions and Mechanical Treatment

The release rate of a drug dissolved in the liquid phase of lipogels may be greatly affected by the type and concentration of gelling agent and by processing conditions and mechanical treatment of the ointment. These differences in release rate are reduced after application of mechanical stress comparable with the strain exerted on the ointment during application to the skin. Therefore, changes in the concentration of gelling agents used to achieve suitable consistency and manufacturing and packing processes that meet industrial and marketing requirements do not appear to exert a practical influence on drug availability after application to the skin.     

The direct/indirect composite resin veneers: a case report

Veneer restorations are well suited for conservative and aesthetic improvement of the anterior dentition. Laboratory fabricated porcelain and composite resin veneers present optimal aesthetics and durability. Although there are disadvantages associated with direct bonding, it provides control of color and contour for the operator, particularly in the case of a single anterior central incisor. Direct/indirect composite resin veneers utilize the advantages of both direct and indirect techniques in reconstruction of restorations with improved physical properties. The learning objective of this article is to review the available composite resins, opaquers, and tints, and present a step-by-step protocol for predictable restoration of discolored anterior dentition with direct/indirect heat-treated composite resin veneers in a single appointment. Patient evaluation, preoperative aesthetic considerations, selection of the restorative composite resins, and the clinical procedure are discussed.
