The aims of the present study were to analyze the most important chemical reactions between sodium hydroxide and potato constituents involved in potato chemical peeling, and to measure the apparent diffusivity of NaOH in potato skin and flesh separately, as a function of temperature and NaOH concentration, selected according to potato chemical peeling process. Chemical reaction of the suberin of the potato skin with NaOH was proposed as the most important one to promote chemical peeling. Whereas starch hydrolysis, middle lamella dissolution and cell wall disruptions were proposed as the principal chemical reactions in flesh. Experiments to determine NaOH apparent dijfusivities in skin and flesh were performed following a cell diffusion method at 25, 40, 50, 60 and 70 °C temperatures and concentrations of 4, 12 and 20 g NaOH/100 g of solution. Finally, correlation equations were determined to describe apparent diffusivity dependence on temperature and concentration.  相似文献

A national telephone survey was conducted of 1,620 randomly selected U.S. residents who spoke English, were at least 18 years old, and resided in households with kitchen facilities. Respondents were interviewed about their recognition of foodborne pathogens, foods at risk for transmitting infection, knowledge of safe food handling, and food-handling practices. One-third of the respondents who prepared meals reported unsafe food hygiene practices: e.g., they did not wash hands or take precautions to prevent cross-contamination from raw meat. Unsafe practices were reported more often by men, adults 18 to 29 years of age, and occasional food preparers than by women, persons 30 years old or older, and frequent food preparers. Respondents who identified a food vehicle for Salmonella spp. were more likely to report washing their hands and cleaning cutting boards after preparing raw meat and poultry. The results raise concerns about consumer food-handling practices. The influence of food safety training, food-handling experience, and age on food-handling practices should be studied further. Awareness of a food vehicle for Salmonella spp., for example, may indicate knowledge of the etiology of foodborne disease that promotes safe food handling. Understanding the factors associated with safe food handling will assist in development of effective safe-food instruction programs.  相似文献

This paper surveys the history of the electric-circuit representation of the transistor over the past fifty years. During the first two decades after the transistor was announced in 1948, primary emphasis was on small-signal equivalent circuits, which could be used for linear-circuit analysis and design. In addition, parameters of many of these equivalent circuits for the bipolar junction transistor, which are described, were related to the physical construction of the device. Approximately two-thirds of the paper is devoted to this period, when the writer personally contributed to this effort. By the beginning of the third decade, transistor circuits had became more complex, and circuit analysis was carried out with the help of digital computers. Interest then shifted away from small-signal equivalent circuits to “models” for computer-aided circuit design (CACD). This transition, including the models used in the widely used CACD program SPICE, is described. MOS transistors are treated only briefly; by the time MOS transistors became commercially viable devices, emphasis then also had shifted to “models” for CACD. In conclusion, the writer notes that there is still hope for us aficionados of small-signal equivalent circuits; new types of transistors are still being characterized in this manner  相似文献

Four reactive power meters, operating on different principles, were tested under nonsinusoidal conditions. Different definitions of the reactive power are discussed. Because the definition and meaning of the nonsinusoidal reactive power are still being actively debated, the readings of the tested meters were compared with four nonsinusoidal reactive powers and the first harmonic reactive power, to verify whether these readings can be interpreted as approximate measures of the different definitions. A family of new 4-noded membrane elements with drilling degrees of freedom and unsymmetric assumed stresses is presented; it is derived from a mixed variational principle originally formulated for finite strain analysis and already used in the literature to develop a purely kinematic membrane model. The performance of these elements, investigated through some well established benchmark problems, is found to be fairly good and their accuracy is comparable with that given by models with a larger number of nodal parameters.  相似文献

The integrated use of neural network and noise analysis technologies offers advantages not available by the use of either technology alone. The application of neural network technology to noise analysis offers an opportunity to expand the scope of problems where noise analysis is useful and unique ways in which the integration of these technologies can be used productively. The two-sensor technique, in which the responses of two sensors to an unknown driving source are related, is used to demonstration such integration. The relationship between power spectral densities (PSDs) of accelerometer signals is derived theoretically using noise analysis to demonstrate its uniqueness. This relationship is modeled from experimental data using a neural network when the system is working properly, and the actual PSD of one sensor is compared with the PSD of that sensor predicted by the neural network using the PSD of the other sensor as an input. A significant deviation between the actual and predicted PSDs indicate that system is changing (i.e., failing). Experiments carried out on check valves and bearings illustrate the usefulness of the methodology developed.  相似文献

Liver fibrosis     
Surfactant abnormalities may contribute to the impairment of gas exchange observed in Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. Analysis of rat bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) lipid extracts from normal controls, steroid controls, trimethaprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) controls, TMP-SMX/P. carinii pneumonia controls, and P. carinii pneumonia animals reveal similar total phospholipid and total protein levels. However, there was a marked reduction in phosphatidylglycerol (PG) from the BAL of P. carinii pneumonia rats as compared with control animals, with a decrease from 4.91 +/- 1.29 nmol/mg protein to 0.46 +/- 0.57 nmol/mg protein (p<0.05) and a decrease, as a percent of total phospholipids, from 7.7% +/- 0.88% to 0.91% +/- 0.59% (p<0.001). Furthermore, in vitro surface activities of BAL lipid extracts from control and P. carinii pneumonia rats revealed minimum surface tension increases from 9.38 +/- 1.71 mN/m in controls to 16.36 +/- 0.83 mN/m in P. carinii pneumonia rats (p<0.05) and likewise maximum surface tension increases from 22.14 +/- 4.34 mN/m to 38.57 +/- 2.07 mN/m (p<0.01). Of interest, the surface activity of PG-deficient P. carinii pneumonia BAL lipid extracts is completely restored to that of normal controls by the addition of exogenous PG. These findings suggest that a functionally abnormal surfactant occurs in P. carinii pneumonia and that this may account, in part, for the impairment of gas exchange observed in this disorder.  相似文献

We report three cases of pulmonary edema associated with prolonged intravenous tocolytic therapy with beta 2-adrenergic agonists among patients with multiple pregnancies. Although beta 2-adrenergic agonists may have direct myocardial side-effects, the underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms are mainly noncardiogenic. The most important one appears to be the fluid overload, related to amounts of fluids given intravenously and to direct result of beta-sympathomimetic therapy on renal excretion of sodium and water. Neonatal benefit of prolonged tocolytic therapy remains hypothetical. If this strategy is used, the prevention of cardiovascular adverse effects requires an intensive maternal supervision, especially in case of multiple pregnancy, the use of beta 2-adrenergic agonists in concentrated solution in order to reduce the amounts of fluids given intravenously, and the association with progesterone therapy which can reduce the infusion rate and the duration of tocolytic therapy.  相似文献

Foveal flicker sensitivity at 0.5-30 Hz was measured as a function of the spectral density of external, white, purely temporal noise for a sharp-edged 2.5 deg circular spot (mean luminance 3.4 log phot td). Sensitivity at any given temporal frequency was constant at low powers of external noise, but then decreased in inverse proportion to the square root of noise spectral density. Without external noise, sensitivity as function of temporal frequency had the well-known band-pass characteristics peaking at about 10 Hz, as previously documented in a large number of studies. In the presence of strong external noise, however, sensitivity was a monotonically decreasing function of temporal frequency. Our data are well described (goodness of fit 90%) by a model comprising (i) low-pass filtering by retinal cones, (ii) high-pass filtering in the subsequent neural pathways, (iii) adding of the temporal equivalent of internal white spatiotemporal noise, and (iv) detection by a temporal matched filter, the efficiency of which decreases approximately as the power -0.58 of temporal frequency.  相似文献
