Spectral characterisation and frame synchronisation of optical fibre digital PPM

The discrete time decoding of data in pulse position modulation calls for accurate timing synchronisation, particularly at the frame rate. The spectral properties of optical fibre digital PPM are considered. An original expression is presented for predicting the spectrum and it is shown that, unlike satellite PPM, a component exists at the frame rate which may be used for timing extraction purposes. Further, it is illustrated that the modulation index can be used to enhance this component by up to 19 dB. This has been verified practically, with the results agreeing to within 1 dB of those predicted from the original expression presented.<>     

A hybrid wafer-dicing process for GaAs MMIC production

A dicing process for GaAs MMIC (monolithic microwave integrated circuit) wafers using spin-on wax for wafer mounting and a hybrid process of wet chemical etching/mechanical sawing for chip dicing is described. This process minimizes ragged chip edges and reduces generation of microcracks in addition to the elimination of the plated gold burrs on the backside of the diced MMIC chips. This process gives a uniformity of -3 μm across a 2-in wafer following the completion of the whole backside process. This GaAs chip dicing technique is amenable to production because it exhibits both a very high chip yield (>90%) and nearly flawless edges     

An improved covariance assignment theory for discrete systems

For discrete systems, the set of all state covariances X which can be assigned to the closed-loop system via a dynamic controller is characterized explicitly. For any assignable state covariance X , the set of all controllers that assign this X to the closed-loop system is parameterized with an arbitrary orthonormal matrix U of proper dimension     

Performance of 1700 m2 solar pond operation in arid zone

A 1700 m² solar pond was constructed in the desert of Kuwait where severe weather conditions prevail in all seasons. The paper describes in detail a diffuser design for the gradient establishment, gradient stability, and thermal performance of the pond. The main problem encountered in operating the pond was mixing between the upper zone and the gradient zone, even when the wind speed was as low as 5 m/s. No mixing between the gradient and the lower connective zone was observed. The wind effect was severe in causing mixing even when the upper convective zone increased to 0.90 m.     

Coupled bending–torsional dynamic stiffness matrix for axially loaded beam elements

Analytical expressions for the coupled bending–torsional dynamic stiffness matrix elements of an axially loaded uniform beam element are derived in an exact sense by solving the governing differential equations of motion of the beam. The influence of axial force on the coupled bending–torsional frequencies of a cantilever and hinged–hinged beam of thin-walled section is demonstrated by numerical results. Application of the developed theory includes coupled bending–torsional frequency and mode calculations of helicopter, turbine and propeller blades, plane and space frames, and grillages consisting of axially loaded beam elements with non-coincident mass centre and shear centre.     

SIMILARITY LAW OF FLUCTUATING PRESSURE WITHIN HYDRAULIC JUMP AREA

Through a series of model tests of five scales for 2-D free hydraulic jump, the da-ta of fluctuating pressure acting on the floor level within the hydraulic jump were obtained. Dur-ing the experiments, Froude number varied from 2.94 to 8.61, and Reynolds number rangedfrom 2×10~4 to 6×10~5. Experiment results indicate that the amplitude scale of fluctuating pres-sure is the length scale of model, i. e. P'=L, which agrees with gravity similarity law: Thefrequency scale of the fluctuating pressure is a unity i. e., f=1, which does not satisfy thegravity similarity law.     

Micellar polymerisation of ionic surfactants studied by conductimetry

The micellar polymerisation of ionic surfactants such as allyldodecyl-dimethylammonium bromide and 3-dodecyl-1-vinyl imidazolium iodide has been studied by conductimetry in aqueous solution. The polymerisation was carried out using two different sources of γ rays directed into solutions of surfactant above the critical micellar concentration. Conductimetry is shown to be a very good physicochemical method for analysis of these solutions. The results showed different behaviour for the two surfactants, which has highlighted a change in the structure of their aggregates which led to the assumption of an interaction between the polymers of high mass and different products of the polymerisation (oligomers, products of degradation, monomers etc.). Ultrafiltration experiments coupled with ¹H-NMR and conductivity analysis confirm these assumptions.
