A New Comb Circular Polarizer Suitable for Millimeter‐Band Application

This letter presents a new polarizer which has a simple comb structure inside a circular waveguide. The electrical performance of the proposed comb polarizer is optimized by a circular waveguide radius and by the physical parameters of the comb plates. This polarizer is suitable for providing good performance in millimeter‐band application because of its simple structure and low fabrication cost. In our experiments the dual‐band comb polarizer designed in band 1(K) and band 2(Ka) showed good electrical performance without any tuning elements.     

Reading Motivation: Multidimensional and Indeterminate.

The Motivations for Reading Questionnaire (MRQ) contains 54 items that are posited to tap 11 dimensions of reading motivation. The structural validity of the MRQ was investigated with 2 samples: (a) 328 students in Grades 3-5 from 2 suburban mid-Atlantic elementary schools and (b) 735 students in Grades 3-5 in 2 suburban southwestern elementary schools. With confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs), the theoretical 11-factor structure did not adequately fit the data in either sample. Subsequently, exploratory factor analyses found 8 factors for each sample with 6 factors defined by only 3 or 4 common items. However, a double CFA cross-validation found an inadequate fit for both samples. Given these results, the authors suggest that the MRQ be revised. Ethylene polymerization over MgO‐supported zirconocene catalysts

Supported zirconcene catalysts on a new support, MgO, were prepared and tested in ethylene polymerization. Three types of impregnation methods were employed to find an optimum supporting method for MgO. The direct impregnation of Cp₂ZrCl₂ on MgO showed low metal loading and polymerization activity, while the catalyst had a higher metal loading and polymerization activity when MgO was treated with methylaluminoxane (MAO) before supporting. Treatment of MgO with MAO during the supporting step invoked two types of catalytic sites, which was evidenced by the bimodal molecular weight distribution of the polymer products. MgO is considered to have potential as a support for metallocenes.     

Jitter considerations in high bit rate digital video signals

While digital signals tend to be more immune to noise as measured in analog systems, other noise related phenomena such as bit errors can cause problems which are equally as undesirable. This paper addresses one such noise artifact which is jitter in a digital bit stream. While the typical method of measuring jitter is with a sampling oscilloscope, a new technique using modulation domain analyzers was used. This method allows direct measurement of the spectral content of jitter. This technique has been used in the telecommunications industry and examples of their specifications are provided     

Enterococcal bacteremia in a medical center

BACKGROUND: The enterococci have become important nosocomial pathogens. They can cause multiple site infections and enterococcal bacteremia becomes more frequently associated with a high mortality rate. Previous studies of enterococcal bacteremia showed a variety of results. To establish the significance and importance of enterococci as nosocomial pathogens in this hospital, to characterize their clinical pictures and to search for the risk factors for mortality, this retrospective study was performed. METHODS: There were 208 cases of enterococcal bacteremia which occurred from 1988 to 1992. Twenty-seven cases had no medical charts, dismissing possibility of evaluation. Finally, 181 cases of enterococcal bacteremia were analysed. RESULTS: One hundred and eighteen episodes were nosocomial infections. Polymicrobial bacteremia occurred in 68.5% of the patients and the most common co-isolate was Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Those patients (78.5%) with underlying diseases and malignancies were the most common underlying problems. The portal of entry could be found in 69.6 percent of patients, with the gastrointestinal tract the most common sources. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing showed high gentamicin resistance rate (89.5%), and ampicillin still had about 80 percent sensitivity rate. The group who received specific antibiotic therapy for enterococcus showed lower mortality (36.4% versus 47.6%). Only one case had infective endocarditis. Forty-nine patients suffered from septic shock, the cause of 30 deaths. Totally 75 patients died during hospitalization. Besides sepsis, another major cause of death was their underlying diseases itself. CONCLUSIONS: Enterococci have no doubt become important nosocomial pathogens and enterococcal bacteremia were associated with high mortality, especially in elderly patients with underlying diseases such as malignancy or diabetes. When clinically dealing with sepsis from the gastrointestinal or biliary tract, especially when previous cephalosporins therapy showed no response, the possibility of enterococcal bacteremia should always be considered.     

Efficient random subcloning of DNA sheared in a recirculating point-sink flow system

Based on a high-performance liquid chromatographic pump, we have built a device that allows recirculation of DNA through a 63-microm orifice with ensuing fractionation to a minimum fragment size of approximately 300 base pairs. Residence time of the DNA fragments in the converging flow created by a sudden contraction was found to be sufficiently long to allow extension of the DNA molecules into a highly extended conformation and, hence, breakage to occur at midpoint. In most instances, 30 passages sufficed to obtain a narrow size distribution, with >90% of the fragments lying within a 2-fold size distribution. The shear rate required to achieve breakage was found to be inversely proportional to the 1.0 power of the molecular weight. Compared with a restriction digest, up to 40% of all fragments could be cloned directly, with only marginal improvements in cloning efficiency having been observed upon prior end repair with Klenow, T4 polymerase or T4 polynucleotide kinase. Sequencing revealed a fairly random distribution of the fragments.

Key components of an ETC include a centralized testing area, registered nurse-physician team, detailed testing protocols, and patient education programs.     

Predicting postlaryngectomy voice outcome in an era of primary tracheoesophageal fistulization: a retrospective evaluation

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the absence of elongate spermatids (ES) from the rat seminiferous epithelium on the quantitative secretion and synthesis of the three major Sertoli cell secretory proteins--SGP-1, SGP-2 and CP-2. Seminiferous tubules (ST) were isolated (a) from normal 28-day-old rats, in which the most mature germ cell type is the round spermatid, (b) from normal adult rats at stages IX-XIV of the spermatogenic cycle, i.e. after spermiation, or at stages I-V and VI-VIII, when ES are still attached to the Sertoli cell, and (c) at stages VI-VIII from normal adult rats and from rats treated with methoxyacetic acid (MAA) in order to specifically deplete ES at these stages. Two-dimensional SDS PAGE combined with computerized image analysis was used to analyse 35S-methionine-labelled intracellular and secreted proteins. In the case of SGP-1 and SGP-2, almost all of the protein synthesized by ST was secreted. The total amount of both SGP-1 and CP-2 secreted by unstaged ST from immature rats was significantly lower than that secreted by unstaged ST from adult rats. The total amount of SGP-1 and CP-2 secreted by adult ST at stages IX-XIV of the spermatogenic cycle also declined dramatically compared to ST at earlier stages. The proportion of the total CP-2 synthesized by ST which was secreted also declined in all situations in which ES were absent from the seminiferous epithelium. The synthesis of only SGP-2 was changed by ES depletion from ST at stages VI-VIII, which was almost doubled compared to synthesis of this protein by ST from control rats. Our results suggest strongly that the secretion of SGP-1 and SGP-2 is via the constitutive pathway, and that regulation of these two proteins by ES is at the level of protein synthesis. In contrast, the regulation of CP-2 by ES is predominantly at the level of secretion, suggesting that this protein is secreted via a regulated pathway. Our findings add to the evidence showing that ES play a major role in the regulation of Sertoli cell function.     

Absence of detectable human herpesvirus 8 in the semen of human immunodeficiency virus-infected men without Kaposi's sarcoma

The prevalence of human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8)/Kaposi's sarcoma (KS)-associated herpesvirus was investigated in the semen of 99 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected men (median CD4 cell count, 357/mm3) by use of a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay capable of detecting <10 copies of HHV-8 DNA. Of the subjects, 95 (96%) self-identified as men who have sex with men (MSM), and 3 had a history of clinical KS. Seminal cell specimens were negative for HHV-8 in 98 subjects. None of the 26 without KS (27.1% of 96 tested) who were seropositive for HHV-8 by IFA for latency-associated nuclear antigens had HHV-8 detected in their semen. The only subject with any evidence for seminal HHV-8 DNA was seropositive for HHV-8 and had active KS. HHV-8 was detected in 10 (10.4%) of 96 peripheral blood mononuclear cell specimens. The prevalence of HHV-8 DNA by PCR in semen of HIV-infected MSM without KS is low.
