Correlation between theaflavins content and tasters' valuations of Kenyan black teas generally give positive but statistically non-significant correlation coefficients. In 105 correlations using 12 samples each, only eight analyses gave statistically significant (P?0.05) correlations. Theaflavins contributed positively towards valuations but Kenyan black plain teas have high and possibly above optimum theaflavins content. Consequently other factors appear to play major roles in tea pricing, for example the generally higher prices realised by Kenyan black plain teas compared to Malawi black plain teas can only be partly attributed to the higher theaflavins content of the Kenyan teas.  相似文献

Identifying the sources and impacts of organic and inorganic contaminants at the watershed scale is a complex challenge because of the multitude of processes occurring in time and space. Investigation of geochemical transformations requires a systematic evaluation of hydrologic, landscape, and anthropogenic factors. The 1160 km2 Boulder Creek Watershed in the Colorado Front Range encompasses a gradient of geology, ecotypes, climate, and urbanization. Streamflow originates primarily as snowmelt and shows substantial annual variation. Water samples were collected along a 70-km transect during spring-runoff and base-flow conditions, and analyzed for major elements, trace elements, bulk organics, organic wastewater contaminants (OWCs), and pesticides. Major-element and trace-element concentrations were low in the headwaters, increased through the urban corridor, and had a step increase downstream from the first major wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Boron, gadolinium, and lithium were useful inorganic tracers of anthropogenic inputs. Effluent from the WWTP accounted for as much as 75% of the flow in Boulder Creek and was the largest chemical input. Under both hydrological conditions, OWCs and pesticides were detected in Boulder Creek downstream from the WWTP outfall as well as in the headwater region, and loads of anthropogenic-derived contaminants increased as basin population density increased. This report documents a suite of potential endocrine-disrupting chemicals in a reach of stream with native fish populations showing indication of endocrine disruption.  相似文献

Abstract: Bioactive compounds from natural plant sources are becoming increasingly important to the food industry. Ilex paraguariensis is used in the preparation of a widely popular tea beverage (Yerba Mate) in the countries of Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil. In this study, extracts of 4 brands of commercial tea, derived from the holly plant species, Ilex paraguariensis, were evaluated for their ability to inhibit or inactivate bacterial foodborne pathogens. The ultimate goal was to evaluate potential use of the extracts in commercial applications. Dialyzed aqueous extracts were screened for antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Staphylococcus aureus. S. aureus was found to be the more sensitive to extracts than E. coli O157:H7. Minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) were determined to be approximately 150 to 800 μg/mL and 25 to 50 μg/mL against E. coli O157:H7 and S. aureus, respectively. A Uruguayan brand had reduced activity against E. coli O157:H7 compared to the Argentinean brands tested. It was concluded that Yerba Mate could be used as a potential antimicrobial in foods and beverages against these pathogenic bacteria. Practical Application: Soluble extracts from Yerba Mate are natural antimicrobials that can be incorporated into food products to achieve longer shelf life.  相似文献

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques coupled with multivariate data analysis were used to conduct monitoring of biochemical changes of black raspberry fruits at different stages of maturation and under various extraction and NMR dissolution solvent conditions: extraction with 50% methanol and D2O as an NMR dissolution solvent, extraction with 50% methanol and 50% methanol-d4 as an NMR dissolution solvent, and extraction with 100% ethyl acetate and 100% methanol-d4 as an NMR dissolution solvent. Partial least-squares discriminant analysis reliably distinguished black raspberry fruits according to the maturation stage, whereby the relative levels of various compounds such as amino acids, organic acids, sugars and phenolic compounds were compared using analysis of variance. Sucrose and most of the amino acids, and organic acids decreased, whereas fructose, glucose, and cyanidins increased in relative concentration according to maturation of black raspberry fruits. The total number and kinds of assigned compounds of the three solvent systems were also compared. This research demonstrates that the metabolic profile of black raspberry fruits changes during maturation, and provides objective criteria for determining the stage of black raspberry fruit maturation via a 1H NMR-based metabolomics technique using multiple solvent systems.  相似文献

Gold biosorption by dealginated seaweed waste has been studied to elucidate the mechanisms of metal uptake from solution. Dealginated seaweed was able to retain up to 1 mmol g(-1) of Au from solution at pH 3. FT-IR showed the presence of carboxylate groups on the surface of the biosorbent; however, the changes observed for the Au-bound samples suggested very little sorption to the carboxyl moieties. Colloidal Au formed on the surface of dealginated seaweed by reduction of Au(III) to Au(0) was observed using ESEM and four different types of particles were clearly identified. The Au distribution matched closely that obtained for S atoms indicating a possible link between these elements. EXAFS measurements showed that colloidal Au is present on the surface of the biosorbent. Evidence of gold reduction from Au(III) to Au(I) and Au(0) was also confirmed by the measured bond distances characteristic of the metal. The coordination number obtained by EXAFS indicated that approximately 75% of the Au on the sample was present in the colloidal form and the remaining Au was bound to S as nearest neighbor. The proposed mechanisms for Au removal from solution are reduction of Au species by components on the surface of the biosorbent to form colloidal metal followed by retention of the ionic Au(I) species at the sulfur containing sites. The results show that dealginated seaweed can be used for the cleanup of gold-containing effluents.  相似文献

We hypothesized that the sorption of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to natural sediments and soils should consider both absorption into a biogenic/diagenetic organic carbon (OC) fraction and adsorption onto a combustion-derived, black carbon (BC) fraction. Here, two sets of literature data were reevaluated to illustrate that an OC absorbent and a BC adsorbenttogether can (1) account for sediment--pore-waterdistribution coefficients observed in the field that are greater than predicted by a simple f(OC)K(OC) partitioning model and (2) explain a group of nonlinear phenanthrene isotherms observed in the laboratory with a single value for the BC-normalized distribution coefficient (log K(BC) = 6.1 i 0.04) and a Freundlich exponent (n approximately 0.6 if log K(OC) = 4.0) that is strongly dependent on the K(OC) value selected.  相似文献

Fructooligosaccharides have been isolated from roots and leaves of Stevia rebaudiana, by hot aqueous extraction, followed by precipitation with ethanol. Their structure has been determined using methylation and NMR analysis, MALDI-TOF, and ESI-MS. Fructooligosaccharides contained almost exclusively (2→1)-linked β-fructofuranosyl, with terminal α-glucopyranosyl and β-fructofuranosyl units. MALDI-TOF and ESI-MS analyses showed the wide range of degree of polymerisation (DP) present in various extracts. From roots and leaves, three different fractions gave profiles of homologous series, with DPs ranging up to 17 with MALDI-TOF and 19 using ESI-MS. These inulin-type fructooligosaccharides were the major component of extracts from S. rebaudiana roots and significant components from the leaves.  相似文献

Chemical concentration quotients measured between water and total organic carbon (TOC) in sediment (II(SOC)) or suspended particulates (pi(poc)) in southern Lake Michigan reveal up to 2 orders of magnitude differences for polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), dibenzo-p-dioxin (PCDD), dibenzofuran (PCDF), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds with similar octanol-water partition coefficients (K(ow)S). Apparent disequilibria for PAHs, PCDDs, and PCDFs, determined as measured II(SOC)S or pi(poc)S divided by their organic carbon equilibrium partitioning values, are significantly greater than disequilibria of PCBs with similar K(ow)S. Apparent disequilibria, when adjusted for black carbon content by using published black carbon nonlinear partition coefficients (K(f,bc)S) and a Freundlich exponent (n(f)) value = 0.7, still exceed equilibrium predictions for the PAHs, PCBs, and PCDDs but with the PCDF disequilibria uniquely below equilibrium. While Monte Carlo analysis of all the variables associated with the black carbon adjusted disequilibria provides wide confidence intervals for individual chemicals, the large class disequilibria differences between PAHs and PCDFs with respect to the PCBs and PCDDs are highly significant. Use of the PCDD K(f,bc)S for calculating both the PCDF and PCDD disequilibria eliminates their extreme divergence. On the basis of the complexity of carbonaceous geosorbent effects and the apparent variable degrees of chemical sequestration in particles, the disequilibria can be adjusted by chemical class to meet expected near equilibrium conditions between suspended particles and water in the hypolimnion. Although these adjustments to the disequilibria calculations produce consistent and plausible values, the complexities of variable carbonaceous geosorbent affinities for these chemicals in Lake Michigan presently favor use of measured, rather than a priori modeled, steady-state total organic carbon-water concentration quotients indexed to TOC as biogenic organic carbon.  相似文献

A field-scale acetate amendment experiment was performed in a contaminated aquifer at Old Rifle, CO to stimulate in situ microbial reduction of U(VI) in groundwater. To evaluate the microorganisms responsible for microbial uranium reduction during the experiment, 13C-labeled acetate was introduced into well bores via bio-traps containing porous activated carbon beads (Bio-Sep). Incorporation of the 13C from labeled acetate into cellular DNA and phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) biomarkers was analyzed in parallel with geochemical parameters. An enrichment of active sigma-proteobacteria was demonstrated in downgradient monitoring wells: Geobacter dominated in wells closer to the acetate injection gallery, while various sulfate reducers were prominent in different downgradient wells. These results were consistent with the geochemical evidence of Fe(III), U(VI), and SO(4)2- reduction. PLFA profiling of bio-traps suspended in the monitoring wells also showed the incorporation of 13C into bacterial cellular lipids. Community composition of downgradient monitoring wells based on quinone and PLFA profiling was in general agreement with the 13C-DNA result. X‐ray micro‐computed tomography (X‐ray micro‐CT) has been applied to visualise ice crystal structures formed during freezing of a number of foods. Materials were frozen unidirectionally at ?5 °C and then freeze‐dried to remove the ice crystal structure and leave voids that can be measured by the X‐ray. The system reconstructs the 3‐D image based on a set of 2‐D images, and is capable of micrometre‐scale visualisation. This study demonstrates the capability of the technique to characterise the internal ice crystal microstructure of a range of frozen materials; meat, fish, chicken, potato, cheese and carrot. Results show the voids corresponding to the ice crystals formed within these materials at different directions to the heat flux and various axial positions. Electron microscopy of the same materials, both fresh and frozen at ?5 °C, indicates the same shape of voids seen by the tomographic technique. Ice crystal parameters such as size, area and width can be quantified by the technique. Ice crystals in carrot were larger than in the other materials, while cheese and potato had the lowest values. The ice crystal distribution of all the experimental materials varied with axial distance from cooling surface; the closer the measurement was to the cooling surface, the smaller the crystal size. The results demonstrate that X‐ray micro‐CT might be useful in the analysis of frozen foods.  相似文献
