Design and analysis of research using time series.

Develops a time-series methodology for approaching data in a range of research settings and presents a design package using the time series as a method to eliminate major sources of rival hypotheses. A mathematical model with special considerations for application is offered which maximizes the utility of time-series data for generating and testing hypotheses. (21 ref.) Wall and ceiling protection for heating appliances

An evaluation was made of the effects of radiant heat transfer from hot stove and chimney pipes to unprotected and protected room walls and ceilings. Pipe surface temperatures were 350° C (662° F) for normal operation, and 400–450° C (752–842° F) to simulate overfire conditions. Unprotected ceilings at 457 mm (18 in.) clearance met code recommended temperature rise limits for normal operation, but protection was needed for overfire exposures. Some protected walls allowed for clearance reductions to 76 mm (3 in.) for all exposures, while others needed at least 304 mm (12 in.) for normal and 457 mm (18 in.) for overfire exposures.Recommendations for model building code specifications for wall and ceiling protection are provided. Brain areas controlling thermoregulatory grooming prone extension, locomotion, and tail vasodilation in rats.

In an experiment with 134 male Long-Evans rats, localized diathermic warming elicited the principal hyperthermic responses of the rat: grooming, body extension, locomotion, and tail vasodilation. Failure of diathermy to elicit nonthermoregulatory responses evoked by electrical stimulation ruled out nonspecific excitation. The largest zone extended from the septal area through the preoptic area and hypothalamus into the midbrain, and a smaller zone was located in the medulla. Grooming, extension, and locomotion were obtained from differentiated though partially overlapping subareas, all of which elicited vasodilation. Fewer than 3% of the electrodes induced all responses, while the remainder produced incomplete combinations, indicating that the rat's hyperthermic repertoire results from largely independent channels from thermal detector to motor effector, and does not require an integrative center or mutually excitatory collaterals. Encounter groups: Comparisons and ethical considerations.

Examines the evolution and nature of encounter groups, and whether or not there are any differences in the relative effectiveness of various encounter groups. Mnemotechnics: Some limitations of the mnemonic keyword method for the study of foreign language vocabulary.

Examined the effectiveness of the mnemonic keyword method in 4 experiments with 248 college students learning lists of 24–32 pairs of Spanish nouns and their English equivalents. The 1st 3 experiments, in which the lists were presented for periods of free study, yielded the following results: (a) The keyword condition, with keywords supplied by the experimenter, was similar or somewhat inferior to the control conditions in both Spanish–English (forward) and English–Spanish (backward) directions; (b) the keyword condition was clearly inferior to controls when Ss were required to generate keywords; (c) keyword and control conditions were similar in retention over 1 wk. In Exp IV the keyword method was superior to the control condition with successive, experimenter-paced presentation but inferior with free-study presentation; free study was markedly superior to paced presentation for both keyword and control conditions. Sex differences and variations in body attitudes.

Tested several hypotheses about the relationship between body attitude and sex membership with 89 male and 80 female undergraduates. 3 separate body attitudes corresponding to Osgood's 3 attitudinal dimensions were measured by the semantic differential on 30 different body concepts. Results indicate that women not only like their bodies better than men but also have a more clearly differentiated notion of what they like and dislike about their bodies. The relationship between overinclusive thinking, perceptual rigidity, and the discrimination learning of new concepts.

Compared 19 newly admitted psychiatric inpatients who showed overinclusive thinking on the Payne Object Classification Test with 24 patients matched for age, IQ, and abstraction ability who were not overinclusive. In a concept-attainment experiment, contrary to prediction, overinclusive Ss did not learn overinclusive concepts. There were no significant differences between the groups. However, overinclusive Ss, as predicted, showed an abnormal lack of "Einstellung" rigidity as measured by a flexibility score from the Brengelmann Picture Recognition Test. The overinclusion score of the object classification test correlated highly (.90) with this flexibility score. (French summary) (16 ref.) I Bought His Private Practice.

In 1975 I enjoyed a full-time faculty position at the New Jersey Medical School. I held a joint appointment in the Departments of Psychiatry and Obstetrics/Gynecology and was involved in the development of the Human Sexuality Program. In addition to my duties at the Medical School, I conducted a small, part-time private practice, seeing patients in my office at the Medical School and occasionally borrowing a friend's office in a suburban town. This arrangement is probably familiar to many neophyte practitioners. Through my work in the Human Sexuality Program of the New Jersey Medical School, I was in charge of conducting weekend "Sexual Attitude Reassessment Seminars." At the suggestion of a senior psychologist, I invited a well-known New Jersey psychologist and the then-acting Dean of the Organizing Council for the College of Professional Psychology, a forerunner of the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology at Rutgers, as a guest. We felt that his presence would be good publicity for our program. It was during this weekend that I was first approached by him with an offer to buy his practice. At the time of the purchase offer, I knew of no other psychologist who had bought a private practice. For the young psychologist genuinely interested in developing a private practice, I would recommend seeking a seller. The choice of the seller, of course, is most important.
