This paper presents a new class of estimators for speech enhancement in the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) domain, where we consider a multidimensional normal inverse Gaussian (MNIG) distribution for the speech DFT coefficients. The MNIG distribution can model a wide range of processes, from heavy-tailed to less heavy-tailed processes. Under the MNIG distribution complex DFT and amplitude estimators are derived. In contrast to other estimators, the suppression characteristics of the MNIG-based estimators can be adapted online to the underlying distribution of the speech DFT coefficients. Compared to noise suppression algorithms based on preselected super-Gaussian distributions, the MNIG-based complex DFT and amplitude estimators lead to a performance improvement in terms of segmental signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the order of 0.3 to 0.6 dB and 0.2 to 0.6 dB, respectively  相似文献

Traditional single-channel subspace-based schemes for speech enhancement rely mostly on linear minimum mean-square error estimators, which are globally optimal only if the Karhunen-Loeacuteve transform (KLT) coefficients of the noise and speech processes are Gaussian distributed. We derive in this paper subspace-based nonlinear estimators assuming that the speech KLT coefficients are distributed according to a generalized super-Gaussian distribution which has as special cases the Laplacian and the two-sided Gamma distribution. As with the traditional linear estimators, the derived estimators are functions of the a priori signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the subspaces spanned by the KLT transform vectors. We propose a scheme for estimating these a priori SNRs, which is in fact a generalization of the "decision-directed" approach which is well-known from short-time Fourier transform (STFT)-based enhancement schemes. We show that the proposed a priori SNR estimation scheme leads to a significant reduction of the residual noise level, a conclusion which is confirmed in extensive objective speech quality evaluations as well as subjective tests. We also show that the derived estimators based on the super-Gaussian KLT coefficient distribution lead to improvements for different noise sources and levels as compared to when a Gaussian assumption is imposed  相似文献

Understanding potential genetic factors in disease or development of personalised e-Health solutions require scientists to access a multitude of data and compute resources across the Internet from functional genomics resources through to epidemiological studies. The Grid paradigm provides a compelling model whereby seamless access to these resources can be achieved. However, the acceptance of Grid technologies in this domain by researchers and resource owners must satisfy particular constraints from this community - two of the most critical of these constraints being advanced security and usability. In this paper we show how the Internet2 Shibboleth technology combined with advanced authorisation infrastructures can help address these constraints. We demonstrate the viability of this approach through a selection of case studies across the complete life science spectrum.  相似文献

This paper applies singularity theory of mappings of surfaces to 3-space and the generic transitions occurring in their deformations to develop algorithms for continuously and robustly tracking the intersection curves of two deforming parametric spline surfaces, when the deformation is represented as a family of generalized offset surfaces. The set of intersection curves of two deforming surfaces over all time is formulated as an implicit 2-manifold I in an augmented (by time domain) parametric space R5. Hyperplanes corresponding to some fixed time instants may touchI at some isolated transition points, which delineate transition events, i.e. the topological changes to the intersection curves. These transition points are the 0-dimensional solution to a rational system of five constraints in five variables, and can be computed efficiently and robustly with a rational constraint solver using subdivision and hyper-tangent bounding cones. The actual transition events are computed by contouring the local osculating paraboloids. Away from any transition points, the intersection curves do not change topology and evolve according to a simple evolution vector field that is constructed in the Euclidean space in which the surfaces are embedded.  相似文献

The double-ended-guillotine break (DEGB) criterion of the largest primary piping system in the plant, which generally provides the limiting condition for the emergency core cooling system requirements, is widely recognized as an extremely unlikely event. As a result, US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff are currently considering a risk-informed revision of the design-basis break size requirements for commercial nuclear power plants. In support of this effort, loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) frequency estimates have been developed using an expert elicitation process by consolidating service history data and insights from probabilistic fracture mechanics (PFM) studies with knowledge of plant design, operation, and material performance. Baseline LOCA frequency estimates for the 5th percentile, median, mean and 95th percentile were determined from each panelist's elicitation responses. Group estimates were determined by aggregating the individual estimates using the geometric mean of the individual estimates for each frequency parameter. Group variability was estimated by calculating 95% confidence bounds for each of the group frequency parameters (i.e., median, mean, and 5th and 95th percentiles). A number of sensitivity analyses were conducted to examine the effects on the quantitative results from varying the assumptions, structure and techniques of the baseline analysis procedure.  相似文献

Light gauge metal sheeting is often utilized in the building and bridge industries for concrete formwork. Although the in-plane stiffness and strength of the metal forms are commonly relied upon for stability bracing in buildings, the forms are generally not considered for bracing in steel bridge construction. The primary difference between the forming systems in the two industries is the method of connection between the forms and girders. In bridge construction, an eccentric support angle is incorporated into the connection details to achieve a uniform slab thickness along the girder length. While the eccentric connection is a benefit for slab construction, the flexible connection limits the amount of bracing provided by the forms. This paper presents results from the first phase of a research study investigating the bracing behavior of metal bridge deck forms. Shear diaphragm tests were conducted to determine the shear stiffness and strength of bridge deck forms, and modified connection details were developed that substantially improve the bracing behavior of the forms. The measured stiffness and strength of diaphragms with the modified connection often met or exceeded the values of diaphragms with conventional noneccentric connections. The experimental results for the diaphragms with the modified connection details dramatically improve the potential for bracing of steel bridge girders by metal deck forms.  相似文献

Five questions prompted by the articles in the American Psychologist special issue on leadership (January 2007, Vol. 62, No. 1., see records 2006-23492-001, 2006-23492-002, 2006-23492-003, 2006-23492-004, 2006-23492-005, and 2006-23492-006) suggest some new directions for leadership research: (1) Not do leaders make a difference, but under what conditions does leadership matter? (2) Not what are the traits of leaders, but how do leaders' personal attributes interact with situational properties to shape outcomes? (3) Not do there exist common dimensions on which all leaders can be arrayed, but are good and poor leadership qualitatively different phenomena? (4) Not how do leaders and followers differ, but how can leadership models be reformulated so they treat all system members as both leaders and followers? Comments on the report by the APA Presidential Task Force on Evidence-Based Practice (see record 2006-05893-001) entitled Evidence-based practice in psychology. Regrettably, the task force report was largely silent on three critical issues. As a consequence, it omitted much of the evidence necessary for a complete picture of evidence-based practice. First, the task force report did not operationalize "evidence." Second, the task force report did not address the crucial problem of iatrogenic treatments. Third, the task force report said little about the necessity for ongoing objective evaluation of clinical cases, which is critical to ethically responsible services. Current debate centers on how research findings should be factored into interventions, not on whether it is necessary to do so. Rather than waiting for the resolution of competing views on the matter, psychologists bear an ethical obligation to offer evidence-informed services. Three critical steps that were largely neglected by the task force report can go far toward helping psychologists honor that commitment: (a) providing a clearer operationalization of scientific evidence, (b) using current research to rule out the use of potentially harmful methods, and (c) using objective criteria to evaluate all of their cases on an ongoing basis. These steps, in turn, clarify the menu of options available to therapists, help protect clients from harm, and offer the advantage of allowing clinicians to contribute to the growing body of knowledge about what does and does not work in psychotherapy. In hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus), anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) exposure during adolescence facilitates offensive aggression that is correlated with the enhanced development of the arginine vasopressin (AVP) neural system and reduced development of the serotonin (5-HT) neural system in the anterior hypothalamus (AH). This study examined the temporal onset of these effects by measuring aggression and AH AVP and 5-HT during progressively shorter periods of AAS exposure during adolescent development. The authors tested adolescent hamsters that received AAS for 3, 7, 14, or 28 days for offensive aggression and then examined the hamsters for AVP/5-HT afferent innervation to the AH using immunohistochemistry. While reductions in AH 5-HT afferent innervation were detectable by 7 days of AAS exposure, no concomitant increases in offensive aggression were observed compared to oil-treated littermates. In contrast, by Day 14 of AAS treatment, AH AVP and offensive aggression were significantly higher than oil-treated controls. These data indicate that relatively short-term adolescent AAS exposure alters aggression and AH 5-HT and AVP development, yet only alterations in AH AVP development correlate with temporal onset of the aggressive behavioral phenotype during adolescent AAS exposure. Since 1984, the major water reclamation plants discharging to the Chicago Waterway System (CWS) have not disinfected their effluents. The possible addition of disinfection at these plants is the subject of an ongoing use attainability analysis (UAA). For the UAA, Escherichia coli (E. coli) is used as the indicator of bacterial contamination. However, only a few years of E. coli data are available for the CWS and the treatment plants discharging to the CWS. Thus, it was decided to develop a model based on fecal coliforms for which more data are available and to develop a relation between fecal coliform and E. coli counts for the CWS. A 1:1 relation was found between fecal coliform and E. coli counts in the CWS by Limnotech (2004, written communication) as part of the UAA. In order to evaluate the effects of possible disinfection measures on fecal coliform and related E. coli counts in the CWS, a simple first-order fecal coliform decay model was added to the continuous-simulation flow-water quality model DUFLOW applied to the CWS system. Due to the limited amount (monthly samples) of measured fecal coliform concentration data for the CWS, a reasonable calibration of the model would have been difficult to achieve based on the traditional trial and error method. In this paper, a new concept of model parameter estimation based on historical data analysis and its application to model calibration is presented. The fecal coliform decay rate k was estimated for every reach of the CWS based on analysis of historical data (1990–2003) between each two consecutive sampling locations and the related travel time between these stations. The fecal coliform decay rate then was determined on the basis of many years (14 years, in this case) of monthly fecal coliform samples rather than the few monthly samples taken in a typical calibration period. The results obtained indicate that the calibration process was successful, and a good match between measured and simulated fecal coliform concentrations at almost all locations along the CWS is achieved with one model run for several multiple month periods in 1998, 1999, 2001, and 2002.  相似文献
