Infants were presented with a moving object under 2 lighting conditions to investigate the role of vision in early reaching. The motion of the target object also allowed for an analysis of the infants' ability to use a predictive style of reaching. Infants were tested twice, at 5 and 7.5 months of age, with a moving object in the light and the same object painted with luminescent paint in the dark. Infants successfully contacted the glowing object on about half of their attempts at both ages, although 7.5 month-olds reached more often. Infants also took into account the motion of the target object by aiming their reaches ahead of the object and by reaching with their contralateral hand. These results suggest that proprioceptive feedback and sight of the target allow for successful reaching with limited visual information, even in relatively complex reaching tasks. The infants' success also demonstrates their ability to adapt their movements and reaching strategy to the speed and trajectory of the target object in order to reach predictively. The 29Si MAS NMR spectra of the 2H, 4H, 6H, and 3C polytypes of silicon carbide are presented. An attempt is made to correlate differences in the chemical shifts with local atomic environment. The results of the analysis of the spectra of pure polytypes are used as a basic for the interpretation of the spectra of mixed polytypes and a discussion of the crystallinity and impurity levels of different samples. Carbon-13 chemical shifts obtained from spectra of the same polytypes are also tabulated.  相似文献

Hemispheric priming was examined in 3 language-trained chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) using a simple reaction time (RT) paradigm. Ss were required to hold down a response button until the occurrence of a response cue. A warning stimulus was presented to either the left visual field or the right visual field (RVF) before the response cue occurred. No warning stimulus was presented on control trials. The warning stimuli were geometric communicative symbols from 2 semantic categories: food and tools. A 3rd set of warning stimuli were familiar geometric symbols. Dependent measures included RT and the number of false-positive responses. RT data indicated an RVF advantage in priming when the warning stimuli were food or tool symbols. No significant visual half-field differences were found for familiar symbols, but a trend toward an RVF advantage was observed. These effects were enhanced when Ss responded with their left hand. False-positive data also indicated an RVF advantage for the food and tool warning stimuli. Response of adults of the West Indian sugarcane weevil,Metamasius hemipterus sericeus, to various semiochemical treatments and physical trap designs was studied in southern Florida in field-grown banana and Canary Island date palms. Ethyl acetate released alone at 860–1007 mg/day was as effective for the capture ofM. h. sericeus as a combination of ethyl acetate (844–919 mg/day), ethyl propionate (348–362 mg/day), and ethyl butyrate (117–137 mg/day) and in one trial was more effective than fermenting sugarcane (250 g), ethyl propionate alone (353–384 mg/day), ethyl butyrate alone (123–174 mg/day), or no treatment. Ethyl acetate released alone at 675–683 mg/day was as attractive as 250 g of fermenting sugarcane or the racemic blend of the male-produced aggregation pheromones [(±)-5-methyl-nonan-4-ol and (±)-2-methyl-heptan-4-ol (8:1 ratio) “metalure”] at 3 mg/day. Weevil counts increased with binary combinations of ethyl acetate, sugarcane, and/or metalure over these treatments alone and the ternary combination was two to three times more effective than any of the binary treatments. Attraction to ethyl acetate released alone at 777 mg/day with metalure was greater than to the hydrolysis products of ethyl acetate (ethanol and/or acetic acid each released at about 6–8 mg/day) with metalure. Weevil counts from traps baited with 250 g of sugarcane and metalure increased with increasing dose of ethyl acetate to about 400 mg/day and then appeared to plateau. Ethyl acetate (about 700 mg/day) and metalure increased weevil counts in traps with increasing amounts of sugarcane (0–2 kg). Molasses (45 g) + water (158 ml) substitutes for sugarcane were about as effective for capturingM. h. sericeus as 250 g of fermenting sugarcane [all treatments with ethyl acetate (847 mg/day) and metalure]. Early experiments used a lethal pitfall trap. We demonstrated that several alternative trap designs were more effective than the lethal pitfall trap for capturing weevils. Color and height (on ground vs. 1 m on pole) did not affect trap efficacy when baited with the ternary combination of ethyl acetate (672–825 mg/day), sugarcane (250 g), and metalure.  相似文献

A predictor-corrector, Crank-Nicolson computer algorithm is examined for the Bellman equation of stochastic optimal control with quadratic costs and constrained control. A linearized comparison equation is heuristically derived for the nonlinear and discontinuous Bellman equation. Convergence of the method is studied using von Neumann's Fourier stability method. A mesh-ratio-type condition for the convergence is derived for the comparison equation. This condition is uniform for both parabolic and hyperbolic versions of the nonlinear equation. The results are valid for Gaussian stochastic noise and Poisson noise.  相似文献

The influence of noncompetitive (MK-801), competitive (AP-7) and the antagonist of polyamines site of NMDA receptor (arcaine) on the central activity of angiotensin II (A II) was studied. The open field test, conditioning of active avoidance responses (CARs) and passive avoidance situation was used to investigate learning and memory in rats. Two pilot studies evaluated the rate of relapse or recurrence (i.e., major depressive disorder) after cognitive therapy (CT). Two sequential cohorts included outpatients who responded to acute phase CT (A-CT) and who agreed to monthly, treatment-free follow-up. In Study 1, the Kaplan-Meier technique estimated relapse and recurrence rates of 40% at 6 months, 45% at 8 months, 50% at 12 months, 67% at 18 months, and 74% at 24 months. In Study 2, responders to A-CT received 8 months (10 sessions) of continuation phase CT (C-CT). In Study 2, relapse or recurrence was 20% at 6 and 8 months, 27% at 12 months, and 36% at 18 and 24 months after A-CT. An exploratory log-rank test showed that relapse or recurrence-free survival was greater in Study 2 than in Study 1. If replicated, this result suggests that C-CT can reduce depressive relapse or recurrence. Alternative explanations are presented. The characteristics of SF6/He plasmas which are used to etch Si3N4 have been examined with experimental design and modeled empirically by response-surface methodology using a Lam Research Autoetch 480 single-wafer system. The effects of variations of process gas flow rate (20-380 sccm), reactor pressure (300-900 mtorr). RF power (50-450 W at 13.56 MHz), and interelectrode spacing (8-25 mm) on the etch rates of LPCVD (low-pressure chemical vapor deposition) Si3N4, thermal SiO2, and photoresist were examined at 22±2°C. Whereas the etch rate of photoresist increases with interelectrode spacing between 8 and 19 mm and then declines between 19 and 25 mm, the etch rate of Si3N 4 increases smoothly from 8 to 25 mm, while the etch rate of thermal SiO2 shows no dependence on spacing between 8 and 25 mm. The etch rates of all three films decrease with increasing reactor pressure. Contour plots of the response surfaces for etch rate and etch uniformity of Si3N4 as a function of spacing and flow rate at constant RF power (250 W) display complex behavior at fixed reactor pressures. A satisfactory balance of etch rate and etch uniformity for Si3N4 is predicted at low reactor pressure (~300 mtorr), large electrode spacing (12-25 mm), and moderate process gas flow rates (20-250 sccm)  相似文献

The gutless hydrothermal tubeworm Riftia pachyptila Jones relies mainly on its chemoautotrophic bacterial symbionts to supply nutrients in the form of secreted organic compounds resulting from fixation and incorporation of CO2. In this study, symbionts were purified, tested for viability, and incubated in the presence of labeled CO2. We demonstrated that purified symbionts can be used as a viable alternative to experiments with bacterial cultures. Several organic acids, sugars, and amino acids were labeled, but their fraction of the total label stayed generally constant during the incubation times used. However, increasing fractions of succinate and, to a lesser degree, glutamate were excreted into the incubation medium, indicating that these are probably the main carbon-containing compounds transferred from the symbionts to the host. Glutamate could also account for the transport of nitrogen from the symbionts to the host.  相似文献
