The Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Ethylbenzene. Cobalt Molybdate Catalysts

The role of the catalyst and feed composition in the conversion and product distribution in the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene, using a series of cobalt molybdate catalysts, was investigated.     

2-Azabicyclo [3.2.0] Heptane-3-One

2-Azabicyclo [3.2.0] heptane-3-one was synthesized by the reaction of cyclopentene and chlorosulphonyl isocyanate. The structure of the product was established by its hydrolysis to cis-2-amino-cyclopentanecarboxylic acid.     

Simple transforms for instrumenting fortran decks

A recent revival of interest in measuring program execution behaviour has led to a number of distinct approaches. Arguments are given for a fairly simple method of modifying FORTRAN source code to collect frequency counts. No symbol table is necessary and only a single reserved name is introduced into the source.     

Oral fish cartilage polysaccharides in the treatment of photoageing: biophysical findings

The topically applied cosmetic products can be helpful in improving the aged skin condition. The present study shows how oral fish-cartilage food supplementation can be helpful in improving the treatment of ageing skin. A total of 30 healthy women with signs of skin ageing were studied. Fifteen of the women were treated with a food supplement based on polysaccharides derived from the fish cartilage and a natural mix of antioxidants for 2 months and the other 15 with a placebo. Clinical evaluation and biophysical parameters related to skin function and wrinkle severity, such as silicone replica, skin thickness, mechanical properties, skin colour and capacitance, were measured. The results showed statistically significant changes in the active-treated group in comparison to the placebo. In particular, dermal thickness (treatment: from 1.13 to 1.23 mm; P < 0.001), skin wrinkling (treatment: from 9.5 to 3.5 R(a); P< 0.002), skin colour (treatment: brighter and less pigmented; P < 0.02) and viscoelasticity (treatment: from 0.70 to 0.97%; P < 0.02) showed considerable improvement. Most of these parameters are related to changes occurring within the dermal matrix, which is improved after the treatment, whereas most of the topically applied cosmetic products have a short-term effect on superficial structures. A combination treatment (oral and topical) can be more effective in reducing the signs of skin-ageing.     

Diverse in Name Only? Intercultural Interaction at a Multicultural University

This study analyzed the frequency and nature of intercultural contact among multicultural university students so as to explore the contextualized shape of intercultural interaction. Unlike past intercultural contact research, this study pushed beyond ascertaining if intercultural contact is being made to examining specific interactional details and topics that constitute already existing contact. We collected survey responses from 4 major racial/ethnic groups—Latino/as, Blacks/African Americans, Whites/European Americans, and Asian Americans—regarding the frequency and nature of intercultural interactions. The results indicate that each group engages in narrow interaction patterns with only 1 other major racial/ethnic group and that most intercultural interaction occurs on campus in class or off campus at work. In addition, it suggests that individuals define intercultural contact in different and often contradictory ways.     

Presence and Absence in ‘Abandoned’ Palestinian Villages

This essay deals with the way Palestinian villages, emptied during the 1948 war when their inhabitants fled or were expelled, were visually preserved in Israeli consciousness. The essay analyses a group of photographs in official Israeli archives that were taken by Israeli photographers between 1948 and 1951. These images, taken for Israeli national propaganda to describe the new Jewish immigrants who had been settled by the new Israeli state in these villages, show how they implement the Zionist world view. In contrast to these purposes, however, reading these institutional photography archives also makes it possible to learn about Palestinian identity before 1948 and gain insight into the Palestinian people, who are missing from these photographs. The essay shows how the manner of reading these archives makes possible the extraction of different layers of meanings.     

Influence of microbial processes on the operation of a cold store in a shallow aquifer: impact on well injectivity and filter lifetime

In this study, the operation of a cold store, located in 30??0?m depth in the North German Basin, was investigated by direct counting of bacteria and genetic fingerprinting analysis. Quantification of microbes accounted for 1 to 10??0⁵ cells per ml fluid with minor differences in the microbial community composition between well and process fluids. The detected microorganisms belong to versatile phyla Proteobacteria and Flavobacteria. In addition to routine plant operation, a phase of plant malfunction caused by filter clogging was monitored. Increased abundance of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria indicated a change in the supply of electron acceptors, however, no changes in the availability of electron acceptors like nitrate or oxygen were detected. Sulfur- and iron-oxidizing bacteria played essential roles for the filter lifetimes at the topside facility and the injectivity of the wells due to the formation of biofilms and induced mineral precipitations. In particular, sulfur-oxidizing Thiothrix generated filamentous biofilms were involved in the filter clogging.     

Analytic techniques in the interpretation of the Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery.

The use of the Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery meets clinical needs and provides for continued research, but should not prevent the clinician from using qualitative data when appropriate. A review of the theoretical basis of the Luria-Nebraska Battery, including reasons for use of a standardized battery and the construction of the scales, is included. The article also presents a brief example of a Luria-Nebraska interpretation using the case of a 60-yr-old male displaying fluent aphasic deficits, who was examined by D. C. Delis and E.
