Increased physical activity is important for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. However, among people with disabilities, inactivity is prevalent. In order to encourage exercise among members of this group, an exercise system combining arm ergometry with video gaming, called the GAME(Cycle) was previously developed. User input was received through an arm crank ergometer on a swivel, with the angular velocity of the ergometer resistance wheel controlling one axis and rotation of ergometer about the swivel controlling the other. The purpose of this study was to detail the algorithms used in this device and present novel features included in a second generation of the GAME(Cycle). The features include a wheel on base, a steering return mechanism, and wireless fire buttons. A focus group of clinicians (n = 8), wheelchair users (n = 8), and clinician wheelchair users (n = 2) was conducted to evaluate the features of the GAME(Cycle). The focus group suggested improvements to the steering mechanism and to reduce vibration in the system. However, the focus group enjoyed the GAME(Cycle) and felt that it would encourage exercise among persons with disabilities.  相似文献

Relatively few studies have examined the role of cognitive appraisal in the process of addictive relapse. This investigation was undertaken to develop a measure of primary appraisal in situations involving a high risk for cocaine relapse. The development and psychometric properties of the Relapse Situation Appraisal Questionnaire (RSAQ) are described. The RSAQ was administered to 114 adult cocaine abusers. Participants rated their appraisal of 2 hypothetical relapse risk situations. A principal-components analysis yielded a single component solution consisting of the same 26 items for the 2 situations, both involving high internal consistency. Analyses demonstrated construct, predictive, and discriminant validity. This study provides initial evidence for the psychometric validity of the RSAQ. Previous work has shown differences between male and female rats in their ability a) to mobilize linoleic acid from adipose tissue when the supply is limited; b) to maintain higher levels of circulating and liver arachidonic acid when dietary linoleic acid is limited; c) to prevent accumulation of cholesteryl ester (CE) in the liver; and d) to increase the proportions of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in their plasma lecithins. Recent studies are reviewed which show that a) essential fatty acid (EFA)-deficient rats exhibit the same kinds of sex differences as do rats on complete diets; b) these differences are mediated or at least influenced by estrogen; c) some of the differences may be attributed to differences in body size which result in less need for PUFA in structural phospholipid (PL); d) the rate of conversion of linoleic to arachidonic acid may differ under certain experimental conditions; and e) female rats have higher proportions of stearic and arachidonic acids in their liver lecithins than do males, which may relate to their higher rate of lecithin synthesis via methylation of phosphatidyl-ethanolamine. The composition of gall bladder bile acids from control and cholesterol-fed, anemic guinea pigs was analyzed by thinlayer-chromatographic and colorimetric techniques. In both control and cholesterol-fed animals, the gall bladder bile acids constituted about one third of the total bile solids. The main component of the bile acids of both groups of animals was chenodexycholic acid, which was predominantly conjugated with glycine. No cholic acid was present although this is the main bile acid in most mammals. The major difference in bile composition between control and cholesterol-fed animals was the conjugation pattern of chenodeoxycholic acid. The ratio of glycochenodeoxycholic to taurochenode-oxycholic acid was high, 6.4, for control animals, and decreased to 2.4 for the cholesterol-fed, anemic animals. Impaired liver function, limited availability of glycine, and greater efficiency of taurocholanic acids for the disposal of excess cholesterol may be involved in the mechanism for this phenomenon. Assessment of existing steel structures: recommendations for estimation of remaining fatigue life. The growing importance of sustainability affects new markets for the construction industry; the rehabilitation and refurbishment of existing buildings and civil engineering works is getting more and more into the focus of construction activities. This also applies to bridges as well where the quality management comprising the full life of a bridge has a long tradition. For bridges in particular the enormous increase of freight‐volume on roads and rails and the growing age of the bridges cause the question, whether the existing structures are still fit for use and whether or not they can be retrofitted and if so how that could be done. For decision making concerning measures for maintenance and refurbishment of a bridge or its substitution by a new bridge the value of the residual service life is very important. Therefore the bridge authorities have been cooperating for a long time to develop appropriate methods for determining the residual safety and service life of existing bridges. Also the International Technical‐Scientific Organisations as the ECCS and fip as well as Standard Organisations as ISO and CEN have cared for an international exchange of views and the harmonisation of methods. For steel bridges in particular the Technical Committee 6 – Fatigue – of the ECCS has taken over the task to develop a technical guidance for the assessment of existing steel bridges on the grounds of national experiences and the present state of the art [1]. This guidance has been prepared to serve as a basis for CEN/TC 250 – the CEN‐Technical Committee responsible for the structural Eurocodes – for future further development of these Eurocodes to include the assessment and retrofitting of existing structures. The result of the development of ECCS‐TC 6 is a technical‐scientific report which has been published by the Commission of the EU (DG‐Research – Joint Research Centre – JRC) in the frame of a cooperation agreement between the JRC and the ECCS. This report may be used as a technical recommendation as long as the revision of the Eurocodes has not been carried out. This contribution gives the main information from the JRC‐ECCS‐report [1], that can be downloaded free of charge from the e‐bookshop of the Commission.  相似文献

At the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), a very intense source of ultracold neutrons (UCN) is being built. The UCN converter of solid deuterium must be contained in a vessel. Produced UCN leave that vessel through its top lid. To decide on the design of the vessel and the top lid, we have measured the transmission of neutrons with velocities between 3 and 20 m/s through different material foils. Contrary to expectations, we found that transmission through aluminium and aluminium alloys is equal or even higher compared to zirconium and reactor-grade zirconium alloys, respectively.  相似文献

Monolayers of PtK-1 and HeLa cells grown on glass or plastic supports are extremely susceptible to lacerations, e.g., splits and cracks caused mainly by shrinkage when prepared for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). We find that a four-step fixation procedure including glutaraldehyde, OsO4, tannic acid, and uranylacetate application, in combination with critical point drying, drastically reduces these structural damages. In addition, the conductivity of the specimens is enhanced, so that they can be investigated without gold coating. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigation of perpendicular sections in the area of lacerations provides evidence that the subcortical cytoskeletal elements are of crucial importance in maintaining cell membrane stability during the preparations. Our relatively quick and simple procedure results in an improved structural appearance of the cells.  相似文献
