The heroic cancer patient: A critical analysis of the relationship between illusion and mental health.

Examines, in the context of cancer illness, S. E. Taylor and J. D. Brown's (see record 1988-16903-001) claim that mental health is to a degree predicated on illusory beliefs about the self, one's control, and the future. The Heroic Model (HM), a stance toward cancer characterized by belief that positive thoughts and feelings, a fighting spirit, and an optimistic outlook will promote cancer remission, is presented as paradigmatic of Taylor and Brown's thesis. Strong and weak formulations of the HM (the former affirming a direct influence of mental states over physical processes, and the latter affirming indirect effects only) are examined with respect to their potential adaptive value as true or false beliefs, with different consequences for well-being. Requirement of major histocompatibility complex-compatible microenvironment for spleen colony formation (CFU-S on day 12 but not on day 8)

The objectives of this study were 1) to evaluate interleukin-8 concentrations in cervical secretions in predicting preterm delivery, microbial invasion of the amniotic cavity and histologic chorioamnionitis in patients with preterm labor and intact membranes and 2) to compare the diagnostic value of interleukin-8 with fetal fibronectin determinations in predicting preterm delivery, microbial invasion of the amniotic cavity and histologic chorioamnionitis in patients with preterm labor and intact membranes. Interleukin-8 and fetal fibronectin were assayed in cervical secretions in 106 patients with singleton pregnancies and intact membranes admitted for preterm labor. Amniotic fluid obtained by amniocentesis was cultured and placentas (No = 43) analyzed for the presence of chorioamnionitis. The prevalence of pregnancies delivered preterm was 46.2% (49/106) and 15.09% (16/106) of amniotic fluid cultures were positive. Interleukin-8 levels in cervical secretions were significantly increased in patients who delivered preterm (p < or = 0.0001), in presence of positive amniotic fluid culture (p = 0.0016) and histological chorioamnionitis (p = 0.008) than in patients with negative findings. Receiver-operator characteristics curve analysis showed that an interleukin-8 value > 450 pg/ml is comparable to that of a fetal fibronectin value > 50 ng/ml in predicting preterm delivery (p = 0.247). Among patients who delivered preterm interleukin-8 concentrations > 860 pg/ml predicted a positive amniotic fluid culture with a sensitivity of 81.2% and a specificity 66.6%. Further, in patients who delivered preterm and had a negative amniotic fluid culture, IL-8 concentrations > 480 pg/ml predicted histological chorioamnionitis with a sensitivity 78.5% and specificity 61.5%. A positive fetal fibronectin > 50 ng/ml was not predictve of either a positive amniotic fluid culture or the presence of histological chorioamnionitis. In conclusion, increased concentrations of interleukin-8 and fetal fibronectin are associated with impending delivery and their diagnostic value seems comparable. However, interleukin-8 concentrations identify patients at risk of a positive amniotic fluid culture and the presence of histological chorioamnionitis. Measurement of interleukin-8 in cervical secretion is a non-invasive method to identify patients at risk for both preterm delivery and intrauterine infection.     

Citation analysis and literature trends.

Comments on an article by T. R. Elliott and E. K. Byrd (see record 1987-23075-001), in which the authors conducted a citation analysis of articles in Rehabilitation Psychology, Volumes 27-29. They claimed to identify influential authors and publications useful for training and research in rehabilitation psychology. Their method of citation analysis, however, appears to have distorted their results. Crisp discusses the problems with their methodology, and makes suggestions for using a different citation method, using more than three volumes of the journal, and including other journals in the analysis. Induction of a Citrus gene highly homologous to plant and yeast thi genes involved in thiamine biosynthesis during natural and ethylene-induced fruit maturation

In response to a light pulse, hamsters normally generate phase advances that are positively correlated with the length of their circadian period (tau). To determine whether this is a general property of the phase-shifting oscillator, the present study looked for a correlation between tau and phase-advance size not only for photic but also for nonphotic shifts. Syrian hamsters, Mesocricetus auratus, were entrained to light-dark cycles with a periodicity of either 23.67 h (the short-T group) or 24.33 h (the long-T group); after release into constant darkness, the short-T and long-T groups exhibited short and long taus, respectively. These animals were then induced to run in a novel exercise wheel for 3 h, starting at circadian time (CT) 7, or were exposed to 20 min of light, starting at CT 19. The size of the ensuing phase advances did not differ between the short-T and long-T groups not only for the nonphotic stimulus but also for the photic one, an unexpected result for the photic stimulus. Within the short-T groups for photic and nonphotic stimuli, the shorter tau was, the larger the phase advances were, another unexpected relationship. Another experiment where phase delays were induced by light pulses at CT 15 also failed to yield significant differences between the short-T and long-T groups. Independently of their after-effects on tau, T cycles may influence the capacity of the pacemaker to phase shift in ways that are still unclear but at least similar for both photic and nonphotic shifts.     

The preparation and properties of coprecipitated Cu–Zr–Y and Cu–Zr–La catalysts used for the steam reforming of methanol

Several samples of exhaust diesel soot are investigated by inverse gas chromatography and linear solvation energy relationship (LSER) modelling according to their soluble organic fraction content and their time of exposure in oxidative conditions. The results demonstrate the evolution of the adsorptive properties of the studied materials towards volatile compounds during the oxidation under NO₂.     

Approximation of certain functions given by integrals with highlyoscillatory integrands

There is often a need to approximate integrals of highly oscillatory functions when studying scattering and diffraction of electromagnetic waves.
