Active components comprised of fluorite-like Lnx(Ce0.5Zr0.5)1−xO2−y (Ln = La, Pr, Sm) and perovskite-like La0.8Pr0.2Mn0.2Cr0.8O3 mixed oxides and their composites with yttria-doped zirconia (YSZ) promoted by precious metals (Pt, Ru) and/or Ni were supported on several types of heat-conducting substrates (compressed Ni-Al foam, Fecralloy foil or gauze protected by corundum layer, Cr-Al-O microchannel cermets, titanium platelets protected by oxidic layer) as well as on honeycomb corundum monolithic substrate. These structured catalysts were tested in pilot-scale reactors in the reactions of steam reforming of methane, selective oxidation of decane and gasoline and steam/autothermal reforming of biofuels (ethanol, acetone, anisole, sunflower oil). Applied procedures of supporting nanocomposite active components on monolithic/structured substrates did not deteriorate their coking stability in real feeds with a small excess of oxidants, which was reflected in good middle-term (up to 200 h) performance stability promising for further up-scaling and long-term tests. Equilibrium yield of syngas at short contact times was achieved by partial oxidation of decane and gasoline without addition of steam usually required to prevent coking. For the first time possibility of successive transformation of biofuels (ethanol, acetone, anisole, sunflower oil) into syngas at short contact times on monolithic catalysts was demonstrated. This was provided by a proper combination of active component, thermal conducting monolithic substrates and unique evaporation/mixing unit used in this research.  相似文献

The annular centrifugal contactor is a combination mixer/centrifuge that has been developed for solvent extraction processes for recycling used nuclear reactor fuel. The experimental observations presented were part of a simulation‐focused research effort aimed at providing a more complete understanding of the fluid flow within these contactors to enable further advancements in design and operation of future units and greater confidence for use of such contactors in a variety of other solvent extraction applications. Laser doppler velocimetry (LDV), particle image velocimetry (PIV), pressure measurements, and high‐speed video imaging for a range of flow rates and rotor speeds were performed to characterize the flow of water in the annular mixing region of the contactor using three different mixing vane geometries. It was found that the geometry of the mixing vanes has a significant impact on the annular liquid height and general flow in the contactor mixing zone. © 2009 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2010  相似文献

Many industrial processes, such as power stations and ore smelters discharge large outflows of “waste” heat in off-gasses rich in CO2. There is, however, rapidly growing interest in the mitigation of this CO2, including using it to enhance the growth of microalgae for producing biodiesel. The use of off-gas to support ponds that act as microalgae incubators could represent a significant benefit to an industry’s operational economics and the environment. However, many generators of off-gases, particularly those related to mining, are located in regions, such as in South America, Northern Europe and Canada that experience long periods of temperatures well below those optimal for microalgae growth. Under these conditions, utilization of the heat in the off-gas to maintain water temperatures in microalgae ponds represents a new approach to beneficially exploit this otherwise waste energy. A dynamic model for a distributed temperature profile of a microalgae incubator pond bubbled through with off-gas was, therefore, developed using energy conservation laws. Simulations were carried out to evaluate pond temperatures in response to changes in gas flow rate and temperature, as well as annual variations in air temperatures and solar radiation. The results demonstrate the feasibility of significantly extending the operation of a microalgae production facility through the year beyond what would be possible without the use of the off-gas.  相似文献

Laboratory animals tend to be more inbred and less genetically diverse than wild populations, and thus may differ in their susceptibility to chemical stressors. We tested this hypothesis by comparing the responses of related inbred (theoretical inbreeding F(IT) = n + 0.25) and outbred (F(IT) = n) zebrafish (Danio rerio) WIK/Wild family lines to an endocrine disrupting chemical, clotrimazole. Exposure of inbred and outbred zebrafish to 2.9 μg clotrimazole/L had no effect on survival, growth, or gonadal development. Exposure of both lines to 43.7 μg clotrimazole/L led to male-biased sex ratios compared with controls (87% versus 55% and 92% vs 64%, for inbred and outbred males, respectively), advanced germ cell development, and reduced plasma 11-ketotestosterone concentrations in males. However, outbred males (but not inbred males) developed testis that were more than twice the weight of controls, which corresponded with a proliferation of Leydig cells and maintenance of the expression (rather than down-regulation occurring in inbreds) of gonadal aromatase (cyp19a1a) and insulin-like growth factor (igf1). Our results illustrate that the effects of an endocrine disrupting chemical (clotrimazole) on some end points (here testis development) can differ between inbred and outbred zebrafish. This highlights the need for reporting pedigree/genetic information and consistency in the responses of laboratory animals (e.g., by using model compounds as positive controls).  相似文献

An enumeration method to be used as an official control method in the framework of Council Directive 70/524/EEC for probiotic bifidobacteria used as feed additives was validated. Seventeen laboratories in 11 European Countries carried out a collaborative study. A spread plate method following BS ISO 15214:1998 using four different agars, Man Rogosa Sharpe (MRS), acidified MRS, MRS with triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) and a selective bifidobacteria medium, was validated. Precision data in terms of repeatability (r) and reproducibility (R) of the method for each medium using different feeding stuffs with a high and a low inoculation level were determined. Bifidobacteria were present in the samples as a single component or in mixtures with other probiotics. The enumeration of bifidobacteria on all agars showed a relative standard deviation of repeatability (RSD(r)) between 1.2% and 6.3% and a relative standard deviation of reproducibility (RSD(R)) between 2.6% and 8.7%. MRS agar was preferred, followed by acidified MRS and MRS+TTC agar. The selective bifidobacteria medium gave similar counts as the MRS media. For routine analysis, the use of MRS agar with supplementation of cysteine hydrochloride (the selective bifidobacteria medium without antibiotics) is recommended. Depending on the presence and concentration of other probiotics such as enterococci, lactobacilli and pediococci, acidified MRS or MRS+TTC agar is recommended. The selective bifidobacteria medium was selective for bifidobacteria.An official control method for enumeration of probiotic bifidobacteria as a single component and in mixtures with other probiotic microorganisms in feeding stuffs was validated. The methodology is not applicable to mineral feed. The results are intended for consideration for adaptation as CEN and ISO standards.  相似文献

An in vitro digestion/Caco‐2 cell model was used to assess iron bioavailability of twenty elite late‐maturing tropical maize varieties grown in three diverse agroecologies in West and Central Africa (WCA). Kernel‐iron concentration of the varieties, averaged across locations, varied from 19.2 to 24.4 mg kg?1, while mean kernel‐zinc concentration ranged between 19.4 and 24.6 mg kg?1. Significant differences in iron bioavailability were observed among varieties, but the environment had no significant effect. Mean bioavailable iron ranged between 14% below and 43% above the reference control variety, TZB‐SR. Variety DMR‐LSR‐Y with the highest concentrations of kernel‐iron and ‐zinc of 24–25 mg kg?1 across the three locations had a similar quantity of bioavailable iron as the reference control, TZB‐SR. In the long run this variety could be potentially effective in reducing iron deficiency because of its high kernel‐iron. The most promising varieties were Mid‐altitude STR synthetic and ACR91SUWAN‐1‐SRC1. They had kernel‐iron and ‐zinc levels of 22–24 mg kg?1 and bioavailable iron 24–36% higher than the reference control, TZB‐SR. Additional research is necessary to determine if the increases in kernel‐iron concentration and bioavailable iron observed in this study can significantly improve the iron status of individuals in WCA at risk for iron deficiency. The effect of temperature of incubation on lag times of two gram-negative foodborne bacteria was investigated. Bacteria were instantaneously transferred between temperatures within and beyond the normal physiological temperature range (NPTR). Abrupt temperature shifts induced lag phases, but the degree of the response was dependent on the direction and magnitude of the shift. Temperature downshifts induced larger relative lag times (RLT; the ratio of lag time to generation time), than equivalent upshifts. The hypothesis of Robinson et al. [Int. J. Food Microbiol. 44 (1998) 83] that lag time can be understood in terms of the amount of work to be done to adjust to new environmental conditions and the rate at which that work is done was supported. Deviation of the reported proportionality between lag time and generation time was observed when late-exponential phase cells were subjected to abrupt temperature shifts from beyond the normal physiological range.  相似文献

We have synthesized a novel six-coordinate metal chelator from the triamine cis-1,3,5-triaminocyclohexane by the addition of a 2-pyridylmethyl pendant arm on each nitrogen, which we term tachpyr. The experiments described here were designed to explore whether this compound exhibits potential antitumor activity. When added to MBT2 or T24 cultured bladder cancer cells, tachpyr was profoundly cytotoxic, with an IC50 of approximately 4.6 micromol/L compared with 70 micromol/L for desferioxamine. To explore the mode of action of tachpyr, several metal complexes were prepared, including Fe(II), Ca(II), Mn(II), Mg(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) tachpyr complexes. Of these, the Zn(II), Cu(II), and Fe(II) complexes were without toxic effect, whereas the Ca(II), Mn(II), and Mg(II) complexes remained cytotoxic. To further probe the role of Zn(II) and Cu(II) chelation in the cytotoxicity of tachpyr, sterically hindered tachpyr derivatives were prepared through N-alkylation of tachpyr. These derivatives were unable to strongly bind Fe(III) or Fe(II) but were able to bind Zn(II) and Cu(II). When added to cells, these sterically hindered tachpyr derivatives were nontoxic, consistent with a role of iron depletion in the cytotoxic mechanism of tachpyr. Further, the addition of tachpyr to proliferating cultures resulted in an early and selective inhibition of ferritin synthesis, an iron storage protein whose translation is critically dependent on intracellular iron pools. Taken together, these experiments suggest that tachpyr is a cytotoxic metal chelator that targets intracellular iron, and that the use of tachpyr in cancer therapy deserves further exploration.  相似文献

Airborne laser profiling data were used to estimate the basal area, volume, and biomass of primary tropical forests. A procedure was developed and tested to divorce the laser and ground data collection efforts using three distinct data sets acquired in and over the tropical forests of Costa Rica. Fixed-area ground plot data were used to simulate the height characteristics of the tropical forest canopy and to simulate laser measurements of that canopy. On two of the three study sites, the airborne laser estimates of basal area, volume, and biomass grossly misrepresented ground estimates of same. On the third study site, where the widest ground plots were utilized, airborne and ground estimates agreed within 24%. Basal area, volume, and biomass prediction inaccuracies in the first two study areas were tied directly to disagreements between simulated laser estimates and the corresponding airborne measurements of average canopy height, height variability, and canopy density. A number of sampling issues were investigated; the following results were noted in the analyses of the three study areas. 1) Of the four ground segment lengths considered (25 m, 50 m, 75 m, and 100 m), the 25 m segment length introduced a level of variability which may severely degrade prediction accuracy in these Costa Rican primary tropical forests. This effect was more pronounced as plot width decreased. A minimum segment length was on the order of 50 m. 2) The decision to transform or not to transform the dependent variable (e.g., biomass) was by far the most important factor of those considered in this experiment. The natural log transformation of the dependent variable increased prediction error, and error increased dramatically at the shorter segment lengths. The most accurate models were multiple linear models with forced zero intercept and an untransformed dependent variable. 3) General linear models were developed to predict basal area, volume, and biomass using airborne laser height measurements. Useful laser measurements include average canopy height, all pulses ( a), average canopy height, canopy hits ( c) and the coefficients of variation of these terms (ca and cc). Coefficients of determination range from 0.4 to 0.6. Based on this research, airborne laser and ground sampling procedures are proposed for use for reconnaissance level surveys of inaccessible forested regions.  相似文献
