Deterrence of repeated oviposition in sorghum shootflyAtherigona soccata   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The sorghum shootfly,Atherigona soccata, under low population density conditions lays one egg per sorghum plant. Possible regulatory mechanisms of this oviposition behavior are reported. The presence of an egg thoroughly washed and reattached to a leaf does not deter further oviposition, indicating the absence of visual cues. When washings from eggs were sprayed on sorghum plants, or when plants from which eggs had been removed were presented to a gravid female, significant deterrence was observed. Apparently a deterrent pheromone is associated with the water-soluble glue with which the females attach their eggs to the leaves. Some deterrent effect persists for at least 7 days.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Nanoparticles of neodymium phosphate and 5% gadolinium (Gd) doped neodymium phosphate prepared by co-precipitation technique belong to the monoclinic monazite phase with space group P21/n. The average crystallite size calculated using Debye-Scherrer and Williamson Hall method matches very well with grain size observed from scanning electron microscope images and Image J software. FTIR analysis signifies the presence of vibration modes along with the phosphate group and a slight shift in wave number was observed with the substitution of gadolinium into neodymium phosphate. Ultraviolet absorption spectrophotometer show transitions from ground state to various excited state within the 4f shell and the absorption edge shifts towards the lower wavelength side (blue shift) with the addition of dopant. Raman spectrum further confirms the formation of phosphate group with relevant peaks.  相似文献

Cadmium doped neodymium manganite having general formula Nd1?xCdxMnO3 where x?=?0.05, 0.20 were prepared by solid state reaction technique. The effect of cadmium doping on the structural, dielectric and magnetic properties were understood by various characterization probes like X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive X-ray analyzer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscope, impedance analyzer, vibrating sample magnetometer and resistivity measurements for low temperature using four probe method. XRD analysis confirms the single phase formation with perovskite structure having orthorhombic phase. The crystallite size was found to be in the range of 30–50 nm as determined by Debye-Scherer relation and Williamson’s Hall method. Density of the samples were determined theoretically and experimentally and compared with the results obtained by Archimedes principle. The scanning electron micrograph shows that the particle size distribution is almost homogeneous and spherical in shape for all grains. FTIR spectra depict the presence of various atomic bonds within a molecule and the present study depicts the presence of the Mn–O bond and O–Mn–O stretching for these compositions. A very large value of dielectric constant was observed at low frequencies due to the presence of grains and interfaces. The variation of dielectric constant value with the change in frequency and temperature were studied and compared for two compositions. Magnetization study confirms the phase transition of the materials from the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic behaviour of the material at low temperature. The variation in resistance below room temperature were studied and compared for both the compositions.  相似文献

Nylon 6 electrospun nanofibers were deposited on plasma-pretreated woven fabric substrates with the objective of improving adhesion between them. The prepared samples were evaluated for adhesion strength and durability of nanofiber mats by carrying out peel strength, flex resistance, and abrasion resistance tests. The test results showed significant improvement in the adhesion of nanofiber mats on woven fabric substrates due to atmospheric plasma pretreatment. The samples also exhibited good flex and abrasion resistance characteristics. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and water contact angle analyses indicate that plasma pretreatment introduces radicals, increases the oxygen content on the substrate surface, and leads to formation of active chemical sites that may be responsible for enhanced cross-linking between the substrate fabric and the electrospun nanofibers, which in turn increases the adhesion properties. The work demonstrates that the plasma treatment of the substrate fabric prior to deposition of electrospun nanofiber mats is a promising method to prepare durable functional materials.  相似文献

Frequency and scale of the blasting events are increasing to boost limestone production. Mines areapproaching close to inhabited areas due to growing population and limited availability of land resourceswhich has challenged the management to go for safe blasts with special reference to opencast mining.The study aims to predict the distance covered by the flyrock induced by blasting using artificial neuralnetwork (ANN) and multi-variate regression analysis (MVRA) for better assessment. Blast design andgeotechnical parameters, such as linear charge concentration, burden, stemming length, specific charge,unconfined compressive strength (UCS), and rock quality designation (RQD), have been selected as inputparameters and flyrock distance used as output parameter. ANN has been trained using 95 datasets ofexperimental blasts conducted in 4 opencast limestone mines in India. Thirty datasets have been used fortesting and validation of trained neural network. Flyrock distances have been predicted by ANN, MVRA,as well as further calculated using motion analysis of flyrock projectiles and compared with the observeddata. To identify the physiological factors that limit the growth of Escherichia coli K-12 strains synthesizing minimal lipopolysaccharide (LPS), we describe the first construction of strains devoid of the entire waa locus and concomitantly lacking all three acyltransferases (LpxL/LpxM/LpxP), synthesizing minimal lipid IVA derivatives with a restricted ability to grow at around 21 °C. Suppressors restoring growth up to 37 °C of Δ(gmhD-waaA) identified two independent single-amino-acid substitutions—P50S and R310S—in the LPS flippase MsbA. Interestingly, the cardiolipin synthase-encoding gene clsA was found to be essential for the growth of ΔlpxLMP, ΔlpxL, ΔwaaA, and Δ(gmhD-waaA) bacteria, with a conditional lethal phenotype of Δ(clsA lpxM), which could be overcome by suppressor mutations in MsbA. Suppressor mutations basS A20D or basR G53V, causing a constitutive incorporation of phosphoethanolamine (P-EtN) in the lipid A, could abolish the Ca++ sensitivity of Δ(waaC eptB), thereby compensating for P-EtN absence on the second Kdo. A single-amino-acid OppA S273G substitution is shown to overcome the synthetic lethality of Δ(waaC surA) bacteria, consistent with the chaperone-like function of the OppA oligopeptide-binding protein. Furthermore, overexpression of GcvB sRNA was found to repress the accumulation of LpxC and suppress the lethality of LapAB absence. Thus, this study identifies new and limiting factors in regulating LPS biosynthesis.  相似文献

Well established silicon microfabrication technology and PECVD nanodiamond growth process enabled us to fabricate an ultra-microelectrode array (UMEA) for biosensing applications. The UMEA consists of 2500 nanodiamond elements in a square array surrounded by a layer of thermally grown SiO2 on a highly doped silicon substrate. Fe(CN)63?/4? redox couple was used for electrochemical characterization of the UMEA using cyclic voltammetry and gave us a steady state response consistent with hemispherical diffusion limited mass transport mechanism. Using the nanodiamond UMEA, we were also able to detect different concentrations of Dopamine in phosphate buffered saline (pH 7.4) without any surface functionalization. The cyclic voltammograms show a steady state response and a linear relationship between the limiting current and Dopamine concentration.  相似文献

Polyaniline (PANi)–titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanocomposite materials were prepared by chemical polymerization of aniline doped with TiO2 nanoparticles. Surface pressure–area (π‐A) isotherms of these nanocomposites show phase transformations in the monolayer during compression process. Multiple isotherms indicate that the monolayer of the nanocomposite material can retain its configuration during compression‐expansion cycles. Langmuir–Blodgett thin films of PANi–TiO2 nanocomposite were deposited on the quartz and indium tin oxide coated conducting glass substrates. Fourier transfer infrared spectroscopy and UV–visible spectroscopy study indicates the presence of TiO2 in PANi, whereas X‐ray Diffraction study confirmed the anatase phase of TiO2 and particle size (~nm) of PANi–TiO2.
