An experiment was conducted in order to determine the macroscopic neutron cross section of various solvents useful in neutron radiographic inspection. These solvents are used to dissolve the salts of high cross-section elements in order to formulate a fluid of maximal neutron cross section. The resulting fluid could then be used as a contrast enhancing agent in neutron radiographic inspection. This experiment was planned using statistical experimental design techniques. The results of this experiment provided a quantitative measure of the mean and standard deviation of the macroscopic neutron cross section for the nine fluids investigated. A control fluid was found to be in close agreement with published values.  相似文献

Does psi exist? D. J. Bem (2011) conducted 9 studies with over 1,000 participants in an attempt to demonstrate that future events retroactively affect people's responses. Here we discuss several limitations of Bem's experiments on psi; in particular, we show that the data analysis was partly exploratory and that one-sided p values may overstate the statistical evidence against the null hypothesis. We reanalyze Bem's data with a default Bayesian t test and show that the evidence for psi is weak to nonexistent. We argue that in order to convince a skeptical audience of a controversial claim, one needs to conduct strictly confirmatory studies and analyze the results with statistical tests that are conservative rather than liberal. We conclude that Bem's p values do not indicate evidence in favor of precognition; instead, they indicate that experimental psychologists need to change the way they conduct their experiments and analyze their data. The effectiveness of ultrasonic velocity measurements was evaluated as a means for nondestructive characterization of cold-rolled copper and 68:32 brass sheets. An apparatus was designed to generate and receive the zeroth symmetrical mode of ultrasonic Lamb waves in thin copper and brass sheets. The effect of angular variations in propagation direction with respect to the rolling direction on the measured Lamb wave velocities is shown. Interpretation of the variations of ultrasonic Lamb wave velocity were related to deformation mechanisms and texture development in copper and 68:32 brass sheets. Results show that the grain size and cold work influence the velocity as well as the texture of copper and 68:32 brass sheets. Results indicate the possibility of using ultrasonic Lamb wave velocity as a tool to monitor elastic anisotropy.  相似文献

Cap-binding proteins specifically bind to the 7-methyl guanosine (m7G) functional group at the 5' end of eukaryotic mRNAs. A novel Arabidopsis thaliana protein has been identified that has sequence similarity to cap-binding proteins but is clearly a different form of the protein. The most obvious primary sequence difference is the substitution of two of the eight conserved tryptophan residues with other aromatic amino acids in the novel protein. Analogous forms of this novel protein appear to be present in other higher eukaryotes but not in yeast. Analysis of the native and recombinant forms of the novel protein by retention on m7GTP-Sepharose indicate that it is a functional cap-binding protein. Measurements of the dissociation constant for this protein indicate that it binds m7GTP 5-20-fold tighter than eukaryotic initiation factor (eIF)(iso)4E. The novel protein also supports the initiation of translation of capped mRNA in vitro. Biochemical analysis and yeast two-hybrid data indicate that it interacts with eIF(iso)4G to form a complex. Based on these observations, this protein appears to be able to function as a cap-binding protein and is given the designation of novel cap-binding protein (nCBP).  相似文献

The stress distribution in a random polycrystalline material (Alloy 600) was studied using a topologically correct microstructural model. The distributions of von Mises and hydrostatic stresses, which could be important factors when studying the intergranular stress corrosion cracking, at the grain vertices were analysed as a function of microstructure, grain orientations and loading conditions. The grain size, shape, and orientation had a more pronounced effect on stress distribution than the loading conditions. The stress concentration factor was higher for hydrostatic stress (1.7) than for von Mises stress (1.5). Hydrostatic stress showed more pronounced dependence on the disorientation angle than von Mises stress. The observed stress concentration is high enough to cause localized plastic microdeformation, even when the polycrystalline aggregate is in the macroscopic elastic regime. The modelling of stresses and strains in polycrystalline materials can identify the microstructures (grain-size distributions, texture) intrinsically susceptible to stress/strain concentrations and justify the correctness of applied stress state during the stress corrosion cracking tests.  相似文献

A new, energy efficient production process for French fries was developed and evaluated. Superheated steam (SHS) was used for evaporation of water instead of pre-drying with air and par-frying with oil. The product was frozen by vacuum cooling. Unfortunately, with this process it was not possible to reach the quality of conventional French fries. Sensory analysis indicated that the main quality defect was a tough crust with a fatty appearance. Confocal Scanning Laser Microscopy showed that this was caused by skin formation on the surface during both SHS drying and vacuum cooling. A frying step was necessary to obtain a porous crust. A satisfactory product quality was feasible after drying with SHS instead of air. Due to the concessions made for the product quality, the final energy reduction was limited. Nevertheless, this study has gained more insight into how processing affects potato tissue on micro-scale and it has shown that a porous structure is essential for good quality French fries.  相似文献

The aim was to investigate mechanisms contributing to quercetin's previously described effects on cell-proliferation and -differentiation, which contradicted its proposed anticarcinogenic potency. In a 10-day experiment, 40 microM quercetin stabilized by 1 mM ascorbate reduced Caco-2 differentiation up to 50% (p < 0.001). Caco-2 RNA from days 5 and 10, hybridized on HG-U133A2.0 Affymetrix GeneChips(R), showed 1,743 affected genes on both days (p < 0.01). All 14 Caco-2 differentiation-associated genes showed decreased expression (p < 0.01), including intestinal alkaline phosphatase, that was confirmed technically (qRT-PCR) and functionally (enzyme-activity). The 1,743 genes contributed to 27 pathways (p < 0.05) categorized under six gene ontology (GO) processes, including apoptosis and cell-cycle. Genes within these GO-processes showed fold changes that suggest increased cell-survival and -proliferation. Furthermore, quercetin down-regulated expression of genes involved in tumor-suppression and phase II metabolism, and up-regulated oncogenes. Gene expression changes mediated by ascorbate-stabilized quercetin were concordant with those occurring in human colorectal carcinogenesis ( approximately 80-90%), but were opposite to those previously described for Caco-2 cells exposed to quercetin without ascorbate ( approximately 75-90%). In conclusion, gene expression among Caco-2 cells exposed to ascorbate-stabilized quercetin showed mechanisms contrary to what is expected for a cancer-preventive agent. Whether this unexpected in vitro effect is relevant in vivo, remains to be elucidated.  相似文献

An overview is given of some current research activities on the design of high-performance controllers for plants with uncertain dynamics, based on approximate identification and model-based control design.
