Geographical informational technology as the basis for the informational integration for the large-scale evaluation of the environment

Complex evaluation of environmental state requires processing of extensive information describing various components and objects of environment. Characteristic of this information is territory fix--each environmental object has definite geographic position and border. The authors discuss effects of up-to-date geographic information technologies on evaluation of environmental state in Bashkortostan Republic. Examples of analysis and simulation of possible changes in environmental state are given.     

Transurethral endoscopic electrovaporization in the treatment of patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia

The adenoid tissue is an immunecompetent lymphoid organ, which has the capacity of reacting against numerous antigens. We have studied the influence that the elimination of the said tissue would have on the total IgE serum levels in 33 patients of an average age of 5 and criteria of adenoidectomy and in whom these levels were measured before and after surgery. We have not noticed any statistically significant differences in the IgE values after adenoidectomy with respect to those prior to surgery, which were normal. Adenoidectomy, like other authors have observed after tonsillectomy, does not alter the IgE serum values.     

Real-time communication in FDDI networks

This paper provides a comprehensive study of the use of FDDI networks to support real-time communication in mission-critical systems. Due to the potentially catastrophic results of failure in such systems, it is important to avoid message loss whenever possible. We develop efficient tests to check whether message loss may occur, either due to missing deadlines or due to buffer overflow. These tests are extremely useful in the design and operation of mission-critical systems using FDDI networks. Two types of tests are developed: message-parameter-based tests, which use detailed system knowledge to determine whether loss may occur, and utilization-based tests, which only require knowledge of the overall system load. In order to examine the system performance over a wide range of network loads, we also examine the probability that a randomly chosen message set will not suffer any loss. The work reported in this paper is compatible with the FDDI and SAFENET standards, and can be applied by engineers building real-time systems using these standards.     

Comparative inhibitory properties of some Indian medicinal plant extracts against photosensitization-induced lipid damage

The protective activities of Emblica officinalis, Terminalia bellerica and Terminalia chebula ethanol extracts against photosensitization-induced oxidation of rat liver mitochondrial lipid were assessed. All the extracts could effectively prevent lipid peroxidation, as assessed by measuring thiobarbituric acid-reactive substrates, lipid hydroperoxide, conjugated diene and 4-hydroxynonenal. The E. officinalis extract was the most potent, revealing its superior ability to scavenge ¹O₂. The extracts also afforded excellent protection against iron-mediated lipid peroxidation that might also be useful in reducing photo-induced iron toxicity. The activities of the extracts were primarily due to their constituent phenolics.     

Natural occurrence of Fusarium toxins in feedstuff

The mycotoxins diacetoxyscirpenol, deoxynivalenol, and zearalenone, produced by Fusarium roseum, were found naturally occuring in mixed feed samples. In all cases analyzed, deoxynivalenol occurred together with zearalenone. The natural occurrence of zearalenone in sesame seed is reported for the first time. Strains of F. roseum isolated in various parts of the world form feed implicated in animal mycotoxicosis produced monoacetoxyscirpenol, diacetoxyscirpenol, deoxynivalenol, and zearalenone.     

Freeze–thaw gelation of hen's egg yolk low density lipoprotein

The freeze–thaw gelation of hen's egg yolk low density lipoprotein (l.d.l.) has been examined by viscometry, agarose gel filtration, electron spin resonance spectroscopy, electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The data indicate that the core lipids, the hydrocarbon chains of interfacial lipids of l.d.l. and the sulphydryl, imino, amino and tyrosine groups in the side chains of l.d.l. peptides are not directly involved in the gelation mechanisms. The gelation is caused by non-specific aggregation due to cross-linking of peptides and/or phospholipid polar head groups of adjacent l.d.l. particles. During freezing, interparticle contacts are formed and strengthened as transformation of solvent water into ice increases the concentration of the particles. Salt and sugar additives inhibit large increases in concentrations of l.d.l. during freezing and prevent gelation by helping to increase solvation of interfacial regions of the l.d.l. particles. Agents that induce large viscosity increases in the l.d.l. sols before freezing may act by producing a local conformational change in l.d.l. protein and/or disrupting lipid–protein bonds.     

Cardiovascular risk reduction in a community setting: some comments

Four case reports are presented of patients who ate the meat of a hog inadvertently fed seed treated with fungicides containing ethyl mercury chloride. The clinical, electrophysiological, and toxicological, and in two of the patients the pathological data, showed that this organic mercury compound has a very high toxicity not only for the brain, but also for the spinal motoneurones, peripheral nerves, skeletal muscles, and myocardium.
