Peripheral neuropathies caused by perhexiline maleate. Apropos of 7 cases]

In the OHH, during the years 1969 to 1974, 28 patients were operatively treated because of delayed callusformation or pseud-arthrosis, following a fracture of the shaft of the humerus. It was possible to inquire about and to re-examine 20 patients. The operative treatment had, when possible been achieved by osteosynthesis through plates (25 cases). Each of the so treated cases lead to healing of the bone, additional nerve lesion did not in one case occur because of the operation. Objectively seen, there existed in 7 patients a slight, final restriction of movements, for the abduction and outside rotation in the shoulder joint. 6 patients complained of being sensitive to weather changes. The different treatment method of the fracture of the humerus and pseudarthrosis was discussed.     

Rejection of mouse-derived Schistosoma japonicum and serum lethality of host immunized with mouse globulin or mouse erythrocytes

Fourteen-day-old, mouse-derived Schistosoma japonicum schistosomula survived, matured, and deposited viable eggs following surgical transfer to the hepatic portal system of rabbits. The survival of such schistosomula is essentially eliminated in rabbits immunized with either mouse erythrocytes or mouse gamma globulin. Sera from rabbits immunized with either mouse erthrocytes or mouse gamma globulin in the presence of normal leukocytes is lethal for mouse-derived schistosomula 14 days of age or older. These sera have no significant effect on newly transformed schistosomula or those derived from rabbits. It is suggested that these results give additional evidence that immunological enhancement is one of the mechanisms involved in parasite survival.     

Social support and coping strategies as mediators of adult adjustment following childhood maltreatment

Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to examine whether coping efforts and social support mediate the long-term sequelae of child maltreatment. The hypothesized SEM fit the data well and indicated that the association between previous childhood sexual and physical maltreatment and current psychological adjustment appeared to be strongly mediated by social support and coping strategies. In this sample of 302 female and male university students, most of whom reported at least one episode of childhood maltreatment, perceived social support and ways of coping with earlier maltreatment appeared essential to an understanding of the relationship between childhood maltreatment and later adjustment.
