Highly effective junction isolation structures for PICs based on standard CMOS Process

This paper presents novel and highly effective junction isolation structures for power integrated circuits. The negative feedback-activated junction isolation is presented and it is proven to be very effective in blocking substrate current from reaching the logic circuitry (orders of magnitude more effective than standard junction isolation techniques). Additionally, in an attempt to further improve the blocking capabilities of junction isolations the use of multiple or combined structures is investigated whilst keeping the surface area used for isolation device in the same range as for the single structures. All isolation structures presented here are based on a 0.6-/spl mu/m CMOS technology.     

Comment on ‘Discussion on Barkhausen and Nyquist stability criteria’

This comment is related to the recently published article entitled “On ‘Discussion on Barkhausen and Nyquist stability criteria’, Analog Integrated circuits and signal processing, Vol. 70, pp. 443–449, 2012. In this article the authors considered one of the possible four alternatives of the Wien-bridge oscillator that was previously considered in the article entitled “Discussion on Barkhausen and Nyquist stability criteria”, Analog Integrated Circuits and Signal Processing, Vol. 62, pp. 327–332, 2010, which depicts the failure of Barkhausen criterion concerning the determination of the condition of oscillation startup of sinusoidal oscillation. In the above mentioned articles the operational amplifier used is assumed ideal. In this comment it will be shown that the Wien-bridge oscillator circuit used in the above mentioned articles can behave as a sinusoidal oscillator only at relatively high frequencies when the operational amplifier can be considered non-ideal. At relatively low frequencies; when the operational amplifier can be considered ideal, the same circuit behaves as a relaxation oscillator with a square wave output rather than a sinusoidal output.     

Performance evaluation of a routing algorithm based on Hopfield Neural Network for network-on-chip

Network on chip (NoC) has emerged as a solution to overcome the system on chip growing complexity and design challenges. A proper routing algorithm is a key issue of an NoC design. An appropriate routing method balances load across the network channels and keeps path length as short as possible. This survey investigates the performance of a routing algorithm based on Hopfield Neural Network. It is a dynamic programming to provide optimal path and network monitoring in real time. The aim of this article is to analyse the possibility of using a neural network as a router. The algorithm takes into account the path with the lowest delay (cost) form source to destination. In other words, the path a message takes from source to destination depends on network traffic situation at the time and it is the fastest one. The simulation results show that the proposed approach improves average delay, throughput and network congestion efficiently. At the same time, the increase in power consumption is almost negligible.

Inhibitory activity of ginger rhizome on airway and uterine smooth muscle preparations

In this study, we describe the tracheal-relaxant and tocolytic activities of the methanol (ME) and aqueous (AQ) crude extracts of ginger (rhizome of Zingiber officinale) in an attempt to rationalize its traditional use in disorders of airways and uterine hyperactivity. Both of the ginger extracts dose-dependently relaxed K⁺ (80 mM) and carbachol (CCh, 1 μM)-induced contractions with more potency against K⁺, similar to that elicited by verapamil, a Ca²⁺ channel blocker. In isolated uterine preparations, the extracts suppressed the K⁺-induced contractions with respective EC₅₀ values of 0.03 mg/ml (0.02–0.05, 95% CI) and 0.05 mg/ml (0.04–0.06). Activity-directed fractionation of AQ yielded an organic and an aqueous fraction with the activities concentrated in the former. Both the crude extracts were found safe in mice up to the oral dose of 5 g/kg when tested for acute toxicity for 24 h. The study shows that ginger possesses tracheal and uterine smooth muscle relaxant activity, possibility mediated via Ca²⁺ channel blockade, justifying its use in disorders such as asthma, cough as well as in dysmenorrhoea and uterine and menstrual spasms and congestion.     

Structural Characterization of Oat Bran (1→3), (1→4)-β-D-Glucans by Lichenase Hydrolysis Through High-Performance Anion Exchange Chromatography with Pulsed Amperometric Detection

Cereal mixed linkages (1 → 3) (1 → 4)-β-D-glucan is a linear polysaccharide composed of glucose units. Oat β-glucan is a natural polymer. The main products of β-glucanase are oligosaccharides with DP3 and DP4, i.e., 3-Ob-cellobiosyl-D-glucose and 3-Ob-cellotriosyl-D-glucose, which represent over 90% of the molecule. Keeping in mind all the benefits of oat bran, the present study was planned to investigate the structural properties of oat bran, high-performance anion exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection was used to examine these oligosaccharides. The structural analysis of oat bran of two oat varieties revealed that the ratio of soluble and insoluble triose to tetraose in β-glucan fraction was 1.44 and 1.78, respectively, for Avon variety; while the ratio of soluble and insoluble triose to tetraose in β-glucan fraction for Sargodha-81 was 1.49 and 1.77. The major units determined were cellotriose and cellotetraose. Other units cellopentaose and hexaoses were also existed but in minor fractions. Lichenase hydrolysis high-performance anion exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection appeared to be the best choice for structural analysis of purified samples of mixed-linkage β-glucan.     

Ohmic‐assisted hydrodistillation of essential oils from Zataria multiflora Boiss (Shirazi thyme)

Ohmic‐assisted hydrodistillation (OAHD) is a combination of ohmic heating and distillation, and could be considered as a novel method for the extraction of essential oils. Major problems with traditional methods are long extraction time and lower purity of the extract. In this study, OAHD was applied as an economic and green technology for the extraction of essential oils from Zataria multiflora Boiss. (Shirazi thyme) aerial parts and the results were compared to those obtained from hydrodistillation (HD) as a conventional method. The results showed that OAHD method had the extraction time of 32.21 ± 2.59 min while this value was about 57.21 ± 2.33 min for hydrodistillation (HD). Scanning electron micrographs of thyme leaves showed a sudden eruption of essential oil glands and their surrounding area for OAHD samples. GC–MS analysis indicated that both methods of OAHD and HD can extract the same compounds.
