Isolation of Shigella dysenteriae serotypes 11, 12, and 13 from patients with diarrhea in Bangladesh

Nine isolates of bacteria biochemically resembling Shigella dysenteriae but not belonging to the 10 recognized serotypes were isolated from patients with diarrhea in Bangladesh. Further studies suggested that two, one, and six isolates belonged to the recently recognized S. dysenteriae serotypes 11, 12, and 13, respectively.     

Fracture characteristics of a burst tested maraging steel rocket motor case

A 0.3 m diameter, 2 m long and 0.0015 m thick, 18 nickel 1800 MNm^–2 grade maraging steel motor case was designed, fabricated and burst tested to gain experience for using the steel as booster case material in satellite launch vehicles. The bursting occurred at 15.2 MPa for which the effective hoop stress worked out to be 1754 MNm^–2 almost equal to the ultimate tensile strength (1764 MNm^–2) of the material in the solution treated and aged condition. The failure analysis revealed that the material failed due to normal tensile overload fracture. The burst test data was used to arrive at fracture mechanics parameters like crack size, gross section area stress and the stress for leak before bursting.     

Protective effect of Picroliv from Picrorhiza kurroa against Leishmania donovani infections in Mesocricetus auratus

The prevalent drugs for treatment of kala azar viz. sodium stibogluconate (SSG) and pentamidine cause severe toxic side effects and acute immunosuppression in the treated individuals. Picroliv, a standardized mixture of iridoid glycosides, prepared from the alcoholic extract of the root and rhizome of Picrorhiza kurroa has shown strong hepatoprotective activity against several models of hepatotoxicity. Therefore, the present study was undertaken with an objective to study the effects of Picroliv (12.5 mg/kg x 7 days oral) alone and in combination with SSG on parasitemia, lipid peroxidation and hepatic marker enzymes of golden hamsters during Leishmania donovani infection. The results indicated a marked hepatoprotective effect of Picroliv in terms of biochemical markers, and a significant antileishmanial activity implying that it can be utilized as an adjunct to chemotherapy or in combination therapy of kala azar along with sodium stibogluconate, thus enhancing the efficacy of antileishmanials.     

Molecular and immunologic characterization of group A bovine rotavirus field isolates with P8[11] spike protein

Bovine rotavirus strain B223 is the North American prototype for group A P8[11] serotype/genotype rotaviruses. Rotaviruses with this serotype/genotype are a prevalent cause of neonatal calf diarrhea and have also been isolated from asymptomatic human infants. On the basis of deduced amino acid sequence of the outer capsid viral protein 4 (VP4), strain B223 lacks a cysteine at position 318 that is conserved among all other rotavirus strains. It has been speculated that this may result in the loss of disulfide bond and a change in the structure of the VP4 that may affect the infectivity and antigenicity of the virus. This paper describes partial sequences of the VP4 gene (nucleotides 613 to 1016 coding for amino acid positions 202 to 335) of 16 bovine rotavirus field isolates with P8[11] that were obtained from calves in Nebraska and Indiana. All the isolates lack a cystein at position 203 and had a conserved valine residue at position 318, thus indicating that the prototype strain B223 is representative of group A rotaviruses with P8[11] serotype/genotype.
