Phase composition and microstructure of In3S4 and CuInS2 films grown on silicon by spray pyrolysis

We describe the microstructure and phase composition of In₃S₄ and CuInS₂ films grown on silicon by spray pyrolysis using aerosols of thiourea complexes and examine the effects of the deposition temperature and the nature of the substrate on the structure of the sulfide-silicon interface.     

Effects of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the ration on the structure of peripheral lymphoid organs, immunological parameters and nonspecific resistance of rats]

It has been established that the fatty component of the ration, with the rest ingredients being unchanged, alters the immunologic status of the body. When fatty portion of the ration was substituted for sunflower oil (omega 6) active macrophage-plasmocytic reaction in the lymphoid organs, elevation of the humoral immunity parameters and suppression of the T-cell system were recorded. The reaction to immunization was less pronounced when equal ratios of sunflower and ichtyenic oils were used. When the fatty component of the ration was completely substituted for ichtyenic oil, a decrease in T-lymphocyte number and focal necrotic changes in the lymphoid organs were observed. The fatty component of the rations used produced no significant effect on the bactericidal activity of the blood serum.     

Optical Evidence for the Existence of a Stripe Structure in the Normal and Superconducting Phases of YBa2cu3O6+x

We study optical interband absorption spectra of insulator and metallic YBa₂Cu₃O_{6+ x} films in a wide temperature region which includes the pseudogap and superconducting states. We show that in the pseudogap state a stripe structure appears with polaron-like charge carriers having an antiferromagnetic core.

Lack of direct connection between arachidonic acid release and prostanoid synthesis upon differentiation of U937 cell

The changes in AA incorporation and release as well as prostanoid synthesis upon differentiation of human premonocytic cell line, U937, induced by three functionally diverse agents--phorbol ester (TPA), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and retinoic acid (RA) have been investigated. The rate of AA incorporation into the cells remained unchanged whereas a 3- to 6-fold increase in AA release upon stimulation with Ca(2+)-ionophore A23187 as compared to undifferentiated cells was observed. While undifferentiated cells were incapable to metabolise AA via the cyclooxygenase pathway all three types of differentiated U937 cells produced TxB2 and PGE2. Only TPA-differentiated cells responded with a 6-fold increase of prostanoid synthesis after A23187 stimulation, whereas in DMSO-differentiated cells prostanoid synthesis was slightly stimulated by A23187 and in RA-differentiated cells it was not stimulated at all. Thus, agonist-induced prostanoid synthesis in differentiated cells is dependent on the nature of differentiating agent and does not correlate with AA liberation.     

The clonogenic capacity of human lung cancer cells

Comparative studies of clonogenic ability of twenty four lung cancer samples have been performed in semisolid agar in vitro and in diffusion chambers in vivo. It is concluded that plating efficiency of lung cancer cells varies from 0.00002% to 0.03% in vitro assays and from 0.01% to 0.11% in vivo. A small number of colonies (less than 20) in 15 specimens from 16 does not permit using this method for preclinical individual sensitivity test. The cloning of lung cancer in vitro gives the efficiency more than twenty colonies per a dish in 5 cases of 11. There is some evidence that these models can be used for prediction of treatment response of individual tumors to chemotherapy.     

Investigation of the adhesion of polyurethanes at low separation rates

The adhesion of polyurethanes (based on simple polyesters) to metals and glass was investigated. It was found that the work of adhesion increases with the lattice density and decreases in the order steel>brass>duralumin>glass. A method was developed for determining the equilibrium work of adhesion that is independent of the coating thickness, its degree of deformation and separation rate, which makes it possible to obtain more correct data on the interaction of polymer coatings with solid surfaces.Translated from Fiziko-Khimicheskaya Mekhanika Materialov, Vol. 5, No. 6, pp. 688–691, November–December, 1969.
