Diamond particles of 5-10 nm in size can be produced in large quantities by denonating oxygen-lean explosives in a closed chamber. They have numerous useful properties and are used in applications ranging from lubricants to drug delivery. Aggregation of diamond nanoparticles is limiting wider use of this important carbon nanomaterial because most applications require single separated particles. We demonstrate that dry media assisted attrition milling is a simple, inexpensive, and efficient alternative to the current ways of deaggregating of nanodiamond. This technique uses water-soluble nontoxic and noncontaminating crystalline compounds, such as sodium chloride or sucrose. When milling is complete, the media can be easily removed from the product by water rinsing, which provides an advantage when compared to milling with ceramic microbeads. Using the dry media assisted milling with subsequent pH adjustment, it is possible to produce stable aqueous nanodiamond colloidal solutions with particles <10 nm in diameter, which corresponds to 1-2 primary nanodiamond particles. The study of milling kinetics and the characterization of the produced nanodiamond colloids led us to conclude that aggregates of less than 200 nm in diameter, observed at the tail of the pore size distribution of milled nanodiamond, are loosely bonded and rather dynamic in nature. Color change observed in ND colloids upon shifting their pH toward the basic end allowed us to demonstrate that the coloration comes from the light interaction with colloidal particles and not from an increase in nondiamond carbon content.  相似文献

In the last decade there has been an explosion of interest in mining time series data. Literally hundreds of papers have introduced new algorithms to index, classify, cluster and segment time series. In this work we make the following claim. Much of this work has very little utility because the contribution made (speed in the case of indexing, accuracy in the case of classification and clustering, model accuracy in the case of segmentation) offer an amount of improvement that would have been completely dwarfed by the variance that would have been observed by testing on many real world datasets, or the variance that would have been observed by changing minor (unstated) implementation details.To illustrate our point, we have undertaken the most exhaustive set of time series experiments ever attempted, re-implementing the contribution of more than two dozen papers, and testing them on 50 real world, highly diverse datasets. Our empirical results strongly support our assertion, and suggest the need for a set of time series benchmarks and more careful empirical evaluation in the data mining community.  相似文献

Phosphorus-doped silicon dioxide thin films were used as ion exchange membranes in low temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Phosphorus-doped silicon dioxide glass (PSG) was deposited via plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). The plasma deposition of PSG films allows for low temperature fabrication that is compatible with current microelectronic industrial processing. SiH4, PH3 and N2O were used as the reactant gases. The effect of plasma deposition parameters, substrate temperature, RF power, and chamber pressure, on the ionic conductivity of the PSG films is elucidated. PSG conductivities as high as 2.54 × 10−4 S cm−1 were realized, which is 250 times higher than the conductivity of pure SiO2 films (1 × 10−6 S cm−1) under identical deposition conditions. The higher conductivity films were deposited at low temperature, moderate pressure, limited reactant gas flow rate, and high RF power.  相似文献

This work reports nondestructive evaluation of reinforcing bars that are corroding in the presence and absence of chlorides utilizing ultrasonic guided waves. The effect of rates of corrosion and its progression in the two environments on the ultrasonic signals is discussed. Surface and core seeking guided wave modes were used to monitor beams undergoing accelerated impressed current corrosion. Effective combination of guided wave modes could relate to the differences in corrosion mechanisms and rates in the two environments. Calibration of the ultrasonic data with the physical condition of the bar in the two environments has been attempted. It is done by conducting destructive tests of mass loss, tensile strength, and pull out strength at different stages of corrosion.  相似文献

In this article, the method of separation of variables (SOV), as illustrated by Subramanian and White (J Power Sources 96:385, 2001), is applied to determine the concentration variations at any point within a three region simplified lithium-ion cell sandwich, undergoing constant current discharge. The primary objective is to obtain an analytical solution that accounts for transient diffusion inside the cell sandwich. The present work involves the application of the SOV method to each region (cathode, separator, and anode) of the lithium-ion cell. This approach can be used as the basis for developing analytical solutions for battery models of greater complexity. This is illustrated here for a case in which non-linear diffusion is considered, but will be extended to full-order nonlinear pseudo-2D models in later work. The analytical expressions are derived in terms of the relevant system parameters. The system considered for this study has LiCoO2–LiC6 battery chemistry.  相似文献

Considering the importance of the error estimates for satellite rainfall products in various applications, the present article deals with the development of an Error Model for Modified-INSAT Multi-Spectral Rainfall Algorithm (M-IMSRA) Estimates (EMME), a recently developed climate region scale rainfall algorithm across India. A non-parametric framework has been adopted to model all the four error components: Correct No-Rain Detection, Miss Rain, False Rain, and Hit Rain in M-IMSRA estimates at climate region scale. The developed error model generated convincing realization of reference rainfall for the estimated rainfall from M-IMSRA algorithm across all the climate regions of India. Exceptions are the high intensity hit rain events across arid Thar Desert and arid Himalayan regions and miss rain events across arid Himalayan region. Overall, the developed error model showed promising results in modelling hit, miss, and false error components of daily M-IMSRA estimates and thus can be associated with the M-IMSRA estimates.  相似文献

Tissue engineering applications could benefit from simultaneous release of growth factors, signaling molecules, and antibiotics to obtain optimal healing of tissues. Elastin-like polypeptides (ELPs) are genetically engineered polymers that possess good biocompatibility, are biodegradable, and exhibit mechanical properties similar to natural elastin. In addition, ELPs exhibit a characteristic inverse phase transition temperature (Tt). This Tt behavior is widely exploited in hyperthermia mediated drug delivery. The objectives of this research were to prepare ELP hydrogel scaffolds using a novel ultrasonication method and to investigate the release of a model protein (bovine serum albumin, BSA) and a commonly used antibiotic in periodontal therapy (doxycycline) from the scaffolds at two different temperatures (25?°C <Tt vs. 37?°C >Tt). Both BSA and doxycycline showed a gradual time dependent release and showed a trend of higher release fractions with higher loading doses. Based on the comparison between the release profiles at the two selected temperatures, the release was higher at 37?°C compared to that at 25?°C for both the loading concentrations of doxycycline (0.05 and 0.1?% v/v) and only one of the loading concentrations of BSA (0.5?% v/v) studied, while the release was higher at 25?°C compared to that at 37?°C only for the other loading concentration of BSA (1?% v/v) studied. These results suggested that the drug molecular weight and loading concentration were significant factors that affected the release kinetics. The experiments in this study demonstrated that the ELP hydrogel scaffolds can successfully release proteins and antibiotics critical to tissue engineering.  相似文献

In this work, "isobutrin", an ecofriendly sensitizer that is extracted from Butea monosperma (commonly known as "Flame of the Forest") flowers, is introduced. It is a bright yellow pigment belonging to the chalcone class and is examined as a sensitizer for optoelectronic applications. It is observed that chelation of this dye with Ti ions results into a strong dye-TiO(2) charge transfer (DTCT) band in the visible region. This Ti-Isobutrin chelate is stable, irreversible and its formation is studied using Benesi-Hildebrand plot. The locations of HOMO-LUMO states of the Ti-isobutrin chelate and the corresponding band alignment with TiO(2) are obtained. Also, a thermal stability test revealed that isobutrin is stable above 100 °C.  相似文献

RNA molecules both contribute to and are causative of many human diseases. One method to perturb RNA function is to target its structure with small molecules. However, discovering bioactive ligands for RNA targets is challenging. Here, we show that the bioactivity of a linear dimeric ligand that inactivates the RNA trinucleotide repeat expansion that causes myotonic dystrophy type 1 [DM1; r(CUG)exp] can be improved by macrocyclization. Indeed, the macrocyclic compound is ten times more potent than the linear compound for improving DM1-associated defects in cells, including in patient-derived myotubes (muscle cells). This enhancement in potency is due to the macrocycle's increased affinity and selectively for the target, which inhibit r(CUG)exp’s toxic interaction with muscleblind-like 1 (MBNL1), and its superior cell permeability. Macrocyclization could prove to be an effective way to enhance the bioactivity of modularly assembled ligands targeting RNA.  相似文献
