Heat-treated wood is a value-added product but its exposure to various environmental factors leads to discoloration of wood surface due to the photochemical reactions. Discoloration has become an important economic problem for wood industries since product specifications are now more demanding. In addition, stricter environmental legislations necessitate the development of environmentally friendly transparent coatings with minimal use of chemicals which balances aesthetic and protection. In this study, the acrylic polyurethane coating was improved with the addition of natural antioxidant (bark extract) and lignin stabilizer alone or in combination to enhance the resistance of this coating to different weathering factors. An accelerated aging test was conducted with the aim of comparing the acrylic polyurethane coatings containing different additives with the commercially available pigmented solvent borne coating used by industry and organic UV absorbers. The modifications in chemical structure of coatings were characterized by ATR–FT-IR analysis. The color change data showed that the coating containing bark extract was the most effective and performed better than the industrial coating. However, the visual assessment showed that the coating containing bark extract and lignin stabilizer had the best performance. FT-IR analyses suggested that the chain scission reaction took place throughout the weathering but its effect was not significant for any of the coatings. 相似文献

Cyathophorella adiantum (Griff.) M. Fleisch. (Division-Bryophyta, Family-Daltoniaceae), an Eastern Himalayan moss was studied for the first time to identify the volatiles derived from cellular and membrane bound fatty acids. A high capacity sample enrichment probe (SEP) was used for extraction of headspace volatile (HSV) molecules followed by GC–MS analysis. Different short-chain oxylipins like alkenes, alkanes, saturated and unsaturated alcohols, saturated and unsaturated aldehydes, ketones were identified along with free and esterified fatty acids, cyclo compounds and some by-products of secondary metabolites. Fatty acid analysis of neutral lipids (NL) and phospholipids (PL) of this plant exhibits the predominance of C16 and C18 fatty acids. It also reveals some interesting information that might indicate the possible fatty acid precursors for volatile generation and their sources in this plant. 相似文献

In the recent sub-20 nm technology node, the process variability issues have become a major problem for scaling of MOS devices. We present a design for a strained Si/SiGe FinFET on an insulator using a 3D TCAD simulator. The impact of metal gate work function variability (WFV) on electrical parameters is studied. Such impact of WFV for different mole fractions (x) of the SiGe layer in a strained SOI-FinFET with varying grain size is presented. The results show that as the mole fraction is increased, the variability in threshold voltage (σVT) and off current (σIoff) is decreased; while, the variability of on-current (σIon) is increased. A notable observation is the distribution of electrical parameters approaches a normal distribution for smaller grain sizes. 相似文献

Thermal degradation of butadiene-based model elastomers was analyzed via a novel reactive molecular dynamics simulation (ReaxFF) method. The molecular simulation was carried out on 40 monomer units connected together. Degradation pathways of both homopolymer and copolymer of butadiene-based model elastomers such as polybutadiene (BR) and poly (styrene-co-butadiene) (SBR) were studied. The evolution of different fragmented products was examined as a function of time and heating rate. The formation mechanisms of different degraded fragments were visualized via the simulation method. The major decomposition products obtained from these model compounds were the monomers and comonomers. Pyrolysis gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (py-GC–MS) analysis was performed on the commercial samples of BR and SBR to verify the simulation results. The results obtained from the reactive simulation were very consistent with the experimental results. The activation energy required for the thermal decomposition of butadiene-based model elastomers were calculated both from the ReaxFF simulation and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). High-performance Kevlar fiber had extensively been explored to upgraded mechanical properties of the advanced composites. Therefore, this study aimed a challenging work to grow carbon nanofibers onto the Kevlar fiber to improve its fiber-matrix interaction properties. It was successfully done through inexpensive flame deposition as well as modification of matrix with hybrid resin using polyurethane-epoxy mixture. A hand-layup method had been adopted to manufacture the composite laminates. The chemical and surface structures of the prepared laminae were examined by scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and the composite's properties were evaluated tensile test, compact tension (CT) fracture test, fractography, and differential scanning calorimetry. The surface modified Kevlar laminae with CNF were used as reinforcing layer in the epoxy and PU/epoxy hybrid resin matrices. CNF-coated heated Kevlar reinforced laminated PU/epoxy hybrid composites (CNF-Kev/PU-Epoxy) showed highest elongation 47% and fracture toughness (11.7 MPa√m) along with good UTS 139 MPa. Therefore, these hybrid nanocomposites developed by simple inexpensive method would be the potential candidates for several advanced applications particularly in defense, automobile, aerospace, and spacecraft applications. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Studies were performed to identify chemical compounds present in wheat straw hydrolysate (WSH) that enhance acetone butanol ethanol (ABE) productivity. These compounds were identified as furfural and hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF). Control experiment resulted in the production of 21.38 g L?1 ABE with a productivity of 0.30 g L?1 h?1. WSH contained 0.04–0.34 g L?1 furfural and 0.12–0.88 g L?1 HMF. Addition of furfural to the fermentation medium at a concentration of 0.50 g L?1 resulted in a productivity of 0.88 g L?1 h?1 which is 293% of the productivity obtained in control experiments. Supplementation with 1.00 g L?1 HMF into the fermentation medium produced 25.27 g L?1 ABE with a productivity of 0.68 g L?1 h?1. A combination of furfural (0.50 g L?1) and HMF (0.50 g L?1) also enhanced ABE production and productivity when added to the fermentation medium. Both furfural and HMF enhanced specific productivity (233–308%) of ABE. In brief, WSH contained an adequate concentration of furfural and HMF that enhanced ABE productivity, specific productivity, and product concentration. 相似文献

This article aims at clarifying the possible design and operating conditions for silica gel-water adsorption refrigeration cycles driven by near-ambient temperature waste heat sources (between 45 and 75°C) with relatively small regenerating temperature lifts (15 to 45 K). A two-stage silica gel-water advanced adsorption chiller is introduced and a simulation model of the chiller was developed to analyze the influence of operating and design conditions on the system performance (coefficient of performance, COP, and cooling capacity). It was hypothesized that the proposed chiller can be driven by low temperature waste heat at 55°C to produce effective cooling. Simulation results show that the operating conditions such as cycle time and hot and cooling water inlet temperature have an influential effect on cooling capacity and COP. COP is proportional to cycle time and heat transfer coefficient as well as inversely proportional to the cooling water inlet temperature, while there are optimum values of hot water temperature and silica gel weight for maximum COP. Cooling capacity mainly improves with the addition of silica gel weight and decreases as cooling water temperature increases. Simulation results also revealed that the system performance can be improved significantly by setting the design and operating conditions optimally. 相似文献

One of the crucial regulators of embryonic patterning and tissue development is the Hedgehog‐glioma (Hh‐Gli) signalling pathway; its uncontrolled activation has been implicated in different types of cancer in adult tissues. Primary cilium is one of the important factors required for the activation of Hh signalling, as it brings the critical components together for key protein–protein interactions required for Hh pathway regulation. Most of the synthetic and natural small molecule modulators of the pathway primarily antagonise Smoothened (Smo) or other effectors like Hh ligand or Gli. Here, we report a previously described Hh antagonist, with a pyrimidine–indole hybrid (PIH) core structure, as an inhibitor of ciliogenesis. The compound is unique in its mode of action, as it shows perturbation of microtubule dynamics in both cell‐based assays and in vivo systems (zebrafish embryos). Further studies revealed that the probable targets are α‐tubulin and its acetylated form, found in the cytoplasm and primary cilia. PIH also showed axonal defasiculation in developing zebrafish embryos. We thus propose that PIH antagonises Hh signalling by repressing cilia biogenesis and disassembling α‐tubulin from its stabilised form. 相似文献

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have crucial functions in many cellular processes, such as differentiation, proliferation and apoptosis; aberrant expression of miRNAs has been linked to human diseases, including cancer. Tools that allow specific and efficient knockdown of miRNAs would be of immense importance for exploring miRNA function. Zebrafish serves as an excellent vertebrate model system to understand the functions of miRNAs involved in a variety of biological processes. We designed and employed a strategy based on locked nucleic acid enzymes (LNAzymes) for in vivo knockdown of miRNA in zebrafish embryos. We demonstrate that LNAzyme can efficiently knockdown miRNAs with minimal toxicity to the zebrafish embryos. 相似文献
