The present work studies an aerogel/epoxy composite that was dip coated onto a carbon fibre substrate by adding the aerogel at the 1?h and the 1.5 mark of the epoxy cure. Both coatings show decrease in thermal conductivity values (39% and 47% respectively) when compared to a pure epoxy coating. The coatings’ reflectance spectra also provided further evidence for the existence of the nano-pores within the aerogel particles. The aerogel coating was modelled using material properties from literature and solved using finite element methods. The model, which validated using experimental data, was then used to predict the coating’s performance in cyclic thermal loads. Additionally, coatings on a single surface- top and bottom; were also modelled and compared with the double coating system wherein it was seen that the double coating system had the lowest rate of temperature change and fluctuations at steady-state in contrast to the bottom coating which, showed the fastest drop in temperature as well as the highest fluctuations at steady state conditions. The effect of the anode and cathode flow field depths on the performance of a single cell Direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC)
of 45 cm2 active area were experimentally investigated. Double serpentine flow fields (DSFFs) with varying channel depth namely, 0.2,
0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1 mm but with fixed channel and rib width each of 1 mm on both anode and cathode were designed, fabricated,
and tested. The experimental study involved measurement of pressure drops across anode and cathode flow field plates, polarization,
and carbon dioxide concentration measurements at various current densities. The mass transport at both anode and cathode were
found to increase with increase in pressure drop across the flow field on account of reduced channel depth from 1.0 to 0.4 mm
at all current densities. However, further decrease to a channel depth of 0.2 mm was found to be counter-productive with different
phenomena operating on either side viz., increased CO2 slug length on the anode flow channel and increased methanol crossover on the cathode side. Hence, the maximum performance
for DMFCs was observed for a channel depth of 0.4 mm on anode and cathode flow fields. A decrease in flow field channel depth

Positive temperature coefficient to resistivity characteristics of high density polyethylene (HDPE)/silver (Ag)‐coated glass bead (45 wt%) composites, without and with nanoclay, has been investigated with reference to HDPE/carbon black (CB) (10 wt%) composites. Plot of resistivity versus temperature of HDPE/CB (10 wt%) composites showed a sudden rise in resistivity (PTC trip) at ≈128°C, close to the melting temperature (Tm) of HDPE. However, for HDPE/Ag coated glass bead (45 wt%) composites, the PTC trip temperature (≈88°C) appeared well below the Tm of HDPE. Addition of 1 phr clay in the composites resulted in an increase in PTC trip temperature of HDPE/Ag‐coated glass bead (45 wt%) composites, whereas no significant effect of clay on PTC trip temperature was evident in HDPE/CB/clay composites. We proposed that the PTC trip temperature in HDPE/Ag‐coated glass bead composites was governed by the difference in coefficient of thermal expansion of HDPE and Ag‐coated glass beads. The room temperature resistivity and PTC trip temperature of HDPE/Ag‐coated glass bead (45 wt%) composites were found to be very stable on thermal cycling. Dynamic mechanical analyzer results showed higher storage modulus of HDPE/Ag‐coated glass bead (45 wt%) composites compared with the HDPE/CB (10 wt%) composites. The very good extraction selectivity of Cu2+ from water was demonstrated with a new microchannel equipment, by employing di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) as an extractant and kerosene as a solvent. The effects of different experimental parameters on the extraction efficiency E, the volumetric mass transfer coefficient KLa, and the entrainment were experimentally investigated. The results showed that the extraction efficiency increased with increasing temperature, extractant concentration, phase ratio (organic/aqueous), and pH. The total flow rate, phase ratio, and pH were found to have a great effect on the mass transfer, whereas the temperature and the extractant concentration showed little effect. 相似文献

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have crucial functions in many cellular processes, such as differentiation, proliferation and apoptosis; aberrant expression of miRNAs has been linked to human diseases, including cancer. Tools that allow specific and efficient knockdown of miRNAs would be of immense importance for exploring miRNA function. Zebrafish serves as an excellent vertebrate model system to understand the functions of miRNAs involved in a variety of biological processes. We designed and employed a strategy based on locked nucleic acid enzymes (LNAzymes) for in vivo knockdown of miRNA in zebrafish embryos. We demonstrate that LNAzyme can efficiently knockdown miRNAs with minimal toxicity to the zebrafish embryos. 相似文献

Strontium and calcium pyroniobates were prepared by a sol–gel process, using strontium/calcium metal and niobium ethoxide as precursors. The formation of Sr2 Nb2 O7 occurred at 750°C via an intermediate perovskite phase of composition close to Sr0.82 NbO3 . The crystallization of Ca2 Nb2 O7 occurred at 600°C directly without any intermediate phases. Sintered Sr2 Nb2 O7 and Ca2 Nb2 O7 pellets showed a preferred grain orientation. The low-melting ternary sulfate and modified sulfate glasses based on transition metals like copper, nickel, and vanadium reduce the smoke generation during burning of the PVC compound. With increase in concentration of these glasses, the smoke-density rating values decrease without appreciably altering the oxygen index values. Although trihydrated alumina and potash alum improve flame-retarding properties, the latter cannot be used as it considerably reduces the thermal stability of the PVC compound. Several nitrate containing anionic clays were synthesized at different temperatures and the kinetics of NO3
– release were determined to test their suitability as slow-release N fertilizers. A sample (Mg:Al = 2:1) synthesized at 60°C with smaller particle size released 75, 86 and 100% of its NO3
– in 1, 3 and 7 days, respectively when equilibrated with a simulated soil solution. On the other hand, the 175°C/2 hrs sample with larger particle size released 65, 77 and 84% of its nitrate in 1, 3 and 7 days, respectively. Another anionic clay (synthesized at 175°C/24 hrs) of higher charge density (Mg:Al = 2:1) containing NO3
– was equilibrated with a 0.012 N NaCl or Na2CO3 to test the role of different anions in releasing the NO3
– anion from the interlayers. The results showed that Cl– released more NO3
– than did CO3
2– from this anionic clay after all the treatment times probably as a result of the CO3
2– anion blocking the release of NO3
– from the interior of the crystals. When a lower charge density (Mg:Al = 3:1) sample (synthesized at 175°C/48 hrs) was equilibrated with 0.02N solution of anions the release of nitrate was as follows: Cl– < F– < SO4
= CO3
2–. These results suggest that the divalent SO4
= and CO3
2– anions are more effective in the release of NO3
– from this lower charge density anionic clay. Time-resolved structural analysis of NO3
– exchange with CO3
2– in the above anionic clay using synchrotron x-ray diffraction showed that ion exchange is rapid because of small crystal size and lower charge density. Thus the release of NO3
– from anionic clays is an interplay among the type of anions present in soil solution, their concentration, pH of soil solution, the charge density and crystal size of anionic clay etc. 相似文献

A comparative study on the pervaporation separation has been attempted for water + 1,4‐dioxane and water + tetrahydrofuran mixtures using sodium alginate and blend membranes of sodium alginate with 5, 10, and 20 mass % of poly(vinyl alcohol). Pure sodium alginate membrane has a selectivity of 111 to water at 0.35‐mol fraction of water in the feed mixture containing 1,4‐dioxane while for water + tetrahydrofuran mixture, the membrane selectivity to water was 291 at 0.31‐mol fraction of water in the feed mixture. Pervaporation results have been discussed using the solution–diffusion principles. Arrhenius activation parameters for diffusion and permeation have been computed from the temperature‐dependent pervaporation results. Furthermore, experimental results have been analyzed using the complete mixing and plug flow models to compute membrane area as well as design parameters that are useful in scale‐up operations. To identify potential biomarkers for improving diagnosis of melioidosis, we compared plasma metabolome profiles of melioidosis patients compared to patients with other bacteremia and controls without active infection, using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-quadruple time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that the metabolomic profiles of melioidosis patients are distinguishable from bacteremia patients and controls. Using multivariate and univariate analysis, 12 significant metabolites from four lipid classes, acylcarnitine (n = 6), lysophosphatidylethanolamine (LysoPE) (n = 3), sphingomyelins (SM) (n = 2) and phosphatidylcholine (PC) (n = 1), with significantly higher levels in melioidosis patients than bacteremia patients and controls, were identified. Ten of the 12 metabolites showed area-under-receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) >0.80 when compared both between melioidosis and bacteremia patients, and between melioidosis patients and controls. SM(d18:2/16:0) possessed the largest AUC when compared, both between melioidosis and bacteremia patients (AUC 0.998, sensitivity 100% and specificity 91.7%), and between melioidosis patients and controls (AUC 1.000, sensitivity 96.7% and specificity 100%). Our results indicate that metabolome profiling might serve as a promising approach for diagnosis of melioidosis using patient plasma, with SM(d18:2/16:0) representing a potential biomarker. Since the 12 metabolites were related to various pathways for energy and lipid metabolism, further studies may reveal their possible role in the pathogenesis and host response in melioidosis. 相似文献
