Developing sustainable products and processes is growing in importance due to increasing regulation, consumer interest, access to information, and competitive forces. In order to adequately evaluate the sustainability of products and processes, there is a need to consider the impacts from all three pillars of sustainability – society, environment, and economics. There are substantial challenges to identifying and understanding the social impacts associated with manufacturing activities. This paper provides a framework for characterizing the social impacts of manufacturing throughout the life cycle of a product or process. Social impacts occur on various scales in manufacturing, from the level of a unit process to the level of the enterprise. Additionally, manufacturing activities impact consumers, communities, and larger political/spatial realms. This paper identifies key characteristics of social impacts associated with manufacturing that should be considered to more effectively address the social dimension of sustainability for products and processes. Examples involving a typical manufacturing process – welding – are presented to illustrate the utility of the framework. 相似文献

9. Conclusion Due to its high temporal and spatial resolution, magnetic resonance imaging meets the requirements for accurate and robust
in vivo visualization of the murine cardiovascular system. As an intrinsically three-dimensional imaging technique, it allows
for quantification of LV volumes without relying on geometric models. Therefore, MRI is uniquely suited for the investigation
of morphologic and functional changes in models of heart failure.
The potential application of MRI in the mouse comprises visualization of cardiovascular anatomy and pathology in newborn and
adult mice, detection of LV geometric and functional changes both acutely and chronically, visualization of cardiac microstructures
such as cardiac valves and coronary arteries, and characterization and quantification of arteriosclerotic plaques in major
murine arteries. Furthermore, MR spectroscopy applied to the mouse heart can give important information on in vivo myocardial
metabolism. Thus, we feel confident that high resolution MRI may substantially contribute to the understanding of the basic

Objective experimental studies have demonstrated that acute myocardial infarction (MI) alters energy metabolism even in non-infarcted
adjacent tissue. In patients with subacute MI, the influence of the regional ischemie insult on energy metabolism of intact
septal myocardium was analyzed using31P-Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS).
Patients and Methods in eight patients with wall motion abnormalities in the anterior wall31P-spectra were obtained from non-infarcted adjacent scptal myocardium, as well as infarcted anterior myocardium (voxel size
25 ccm each) 29 ±8 days after MI using a 3D-CSI technique. Additionally, cardiac function was analyzed using breath-hold cine
MRI. MR1 was repeated 6 months after revascularization to assess viability of infarcted segments. Eight age-matched healthy
volunteers served as control group.
Results according to follow-up MRI 4/8 patients showed regional wall motion recovery. Here, PCr/ATP-ratios were not significantly
reduced in intact septal myocardium as well as infarcted anterior myocardium compared to healthy volunteers (1.28 ±0.10 and
1.14 ±0.09 vs. 1.45 ±0.29). No recovery of regional function was detected in 4/8 patients with —therefore—non-viable anterior
myocardium. PCr/ATP-ratios were significantly reduced in intact and infarcted myocardium compared with healthy volunteers
as well as to patients with wall motion recovery (0.77 ±0.17 and 0.49 ±0.23;P < 0.05).
Discussion these preliminary results indicate that energy metabolism is reduced in patients with persisting wall motion abnormalities
after myocardial infarction and revascularization in ischemically injured as well as in adjacent non-injured myocardium. 相似文献

Antimicrobial peptides are a promising group of compounds used for the treatment of infections. In some cases, metal ions are essential to activate these molecules. Examples of metalloantibiotics are, for instance, bleomycin and dermcidin. This study is focused on three new pseudopeptides with potential biological activity. The coordination behavior of all ligands with Cu(II) and Ni(II) ions has been examined. Various analytical methods such as potentiometric titration, UV-Vis and CD spectroscopies, and mass spectrometry were used. All compounds are convenient chelators for metal ion-binding. Two of the ligands tested have histidine residues. Surprisingly, imidazole nitrogen is not involved in the coordination of the metal ion. The N-terminal amino group, Dab side chains, and amide nitrogen atoms of the peptide bonds coordinated Cu(II) and Ni(II) in all the complexes formed. The cytotoxicity of three pseudopeptides and their complexes was evaluated. Moreover, their other model allowed for assessing the attenuation of LPS-induced cytotoxicity and anti-inflammatory activities were also evaluated, the results of which revealed to be very promising. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to analyze the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) and retinoid X receptor α (RxRα), a binding heterodimer playing a pivotal role in the successful trophoblast invasion, in the placental tissue of preeclamptic patients. Furthermore, we aimed to characterize a possible interaction between PPARγ and H3K4me3 (trimethylated lysine 4 of the histone H3), respectively H3K9ac (acetylated lysine 9 of the histone H3), to illuminate the role of histone modifications in a defective trophoblast invasion in preeclampsia (PE). Therefore, the expression of PPARγ and RxRα was analyzed in 26 PE and 25 control placentas by immunohistochemical peroxidase staining, as well as the co-expression with H3K4me3 and H3K9ac by double immunofluorescence staining. Further, the effect of a specific PPARγ-agonist (Ciglitazone) and PPARγ-antagonist (T0070907) on the histone modifications H3K9ac and H3K4me3 was analyzed in vitro. In PE placentas, we found a reduced expression of PPARγ and RxRα and a reduced co-expression with H3K4me3 and H3K9ac in the extravillous trophoblast (EVT). Furthermore, with the PPARγ-antagonist treated human villous trophoblast (HVT) cells and primary isolated EVT cells showed higher levels of the histone modification proteins whereas treatment with the PPARγ-agonist reduced respective histone modifications. Our results show that the stimulation of PPARγ-activity leads to a reduction of H3K4me3 and H3K9ac in trophoblast cells, but paradoxically decreases the nuclear PPARγ expression. As the importance of PPARγ, being involved in a successful trophoblast invasion has already been investigated, our results reveal a pathophysiologic connection between PPARγ and the epigenetic modulation via H3K4me3 and H3K9ac in PE. 相似文献

The mechanical and adhesion behavior of cationically polymerized, partially crystalline epoxy networks is presented. For this, a reactive and a nonreactive poly(?-caprolactone) (PCL) were used as the crystalline component for the formation of copolymers and polymer alloys, respectively. The trade-off between toughness on the one hand and glass transition temperature and mechanical strength on the other can be reduced by the presence of nanostructures in combination with small crystalline domains (1 μm), as in the case of epoxy/PCL-based polymer alloys. This structure–property relationship reveals that a certain degree of crystallinity leads to enhanced toughness in cationically polymerized epoxy networks. 相似文献
