Hydroxypropyl lignin-based thermosetting polyurethanes were synthesized with excess hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) and tolylene diisocyanate (TDI) by solution casting. Four polyethylene glycols (PEG) of molecular weight 400, 600, 1000, and 4000 were mixed with lignin polyol to incorporate different proportions of soft segment into the network prior to crosslinking. Neither thermal nor mechanical and limited small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) analysis provided distinct evidence for phase separation and microstructure formation. The study examines the effect of the soft segment in relation to chain length and weight contribution on the thermal and mechanical properties of the final networks. A significant sensitivity of glass transition temperature (Tg), of swelling in DMF, and of the mechanical properties to soft segment content was observed. Some of this sensitivity must, however, be attributed to differences in crosslink density since the polyol to diisocyanate weight ratio was kept constant throughout the synthesis series. The magnitude of the change of the different properties was found to be influenced by both glycol content and glycol molecular weight. The Tg of the network decreased from 105°C to as low as 38°C (HDI), and from 158°C to 70°C (TDI), with incorporation of up to 17.8% glycol, and it was greater with lower molecular weight glycols than with higher ones at any weight fraction. Swelling in DMF increased as expected with soft segment content. Mechanical properties were affected most if HDI and lower molecular weight glycols were used. The uniformity in structure, reduction in brittleness, and considerable improvement in mechanical properties with inclusion of minor PEG contents indicates that lignin-based network polyurethanes can be synthesized with controllable performance characteristics.  相似文献

It has been over 10 years since robots have appeared in the pharmaceutical analysis laboratory. In the early days, it was common for one selected individual to be responsible for the programming, usage and maintenance of the robots(s). However, the increasing use of robotics has prompted the formation of robotics ‘laboratories’ and/or ‘groups’. This is especially true when multiple robotic systems and applications are involved.Over the past several years at ISLAR, many champions of robotics have given presentations on the setup and usage of robotics within their organizations. These managers have described both the ‘centralized’ and ‘decentralized’ approaches to the implementation of robotics. In the centralized system, a single group is charged with all aspects of the robotic project, including justification, purchase, validation, use and maintenance. Under such an arrangement, samples are usually given to the robotics group for analysis. In contrast, a totally decentralized approach to robotics would have units interspersed throughout the organization, with each individual group responsible for their respective unit(s), in much the same way as liquid chromatographs are considered.At Hoffmann-La Roche, aspects of both the centralized and decentralized approaches to robotics are used which make our combined system the ‘best of both worlds’. This paper describes the Roche philosophy towards robotics and highlights the advantages to the system used.  相似文献

Fig wasps (Chalcidoidea; Agaonidae) are intimately associated with the 750 or so species of fig trees (Ficus, Moraceae). Each tree species is usually pollinated by a single species of wasp belonging to the subfamily Agaoninae, while other wasps of the family are parasitoids or seed predators. Previous experiments have shown that the wasps are attracted to the trees by volatiles emanating from the figs. Using fig-bearing trees and arrays of sticky traps baited with figs, we investigated the specificity of wasp attraction and its timing. The pollinators of two closely relatedFicus species were specifically attracted to figs of their host species and only at the time when figs were ready to be pollinated. Some nonpollinating fig wasps appear to respond to the same volatile cues.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce new methods for finding functions that lower bound the value function of a stochastic control problem, using an iterated form of the Bellman inequality. Our method is based on solving linear or semidefinite programs, and produces both a bound on the optimal objective, as well as a suboptimal policy that appears to works very well. These results extend and improve bounds obtained in a previous paper using a single Bellman inequality condition. We describe the methods in a general setting and show how they can be applied in specific cases including the finite state case, constrained linear quadratic control, switched affine control, and multi‐period portfolio investment. This article presents a GPU-based single-unit deadlock detection methodology and its algorithm, GPU-OSDDA. Our GPU-based design utilizes parallel hardware of GPU to perform computations and thus is able to overcome the major limitation of prior hardware-based approaches by having the capability of handling thousands of processes and resources, whilst achieving real-world run-times. By utilizing a bit-vector technique for storing algorithm matrices and designing novel, efficient algorithmic methods, we not only reduce memory usage dramatically but also achieve two orders of magnitude speedup over CPU equivalents. Additionally, GPU-OSDDA acts as an interactive service to the CPU, because all of the aforementioned computations and matrix management techniques take place on the GPU, requiring minimal interaction with the CPU. GPU-OSDDA is implemented on three GPU cards: Tesla C2050, Tesla K20c, and Titan X. Our design shows overall speedups of 6-595X over CPU equivalents.  相似文献

We investigate the memorability of data represented in two different visualization designs. In contrast to recent studies that examine which types of visual information make visualizations memorable, we examine the effect of different visualizations on time and accuracy of recall of the displayed data, minutes and days after interaction with the visualizations. In particular, we describe the results of an evaluation comparing the memorability of two different visualizations of the same relational data: node‐link diagrams and map‐based visualization. We find significant differences in the accuracy of the tasks performed, and these differences persist days after the original exposure to the visualizations. Specifically, participants in the study recalled the data better when exposed to map‐based visualizations as opposed to node‐link diagrams. We discuss the scope of the study and its limitations, possible implications, and future directions.  相似文献

Optics clustered to output unique solutions (OCTOPUS) is a microscopy platform that combines single molecule and ensemble imaging methodologies. A novel aspect of OCTOPUS is its laser excitation system, which consists of a central core of interlocked continuous wave and pulsed laser sources, launched into optical fibres and linked via laser combiners. Fibres are plugged into wall-mounted patch panels that reach microscopy end-stations in adjacent rooms. This allows multiple tailor-made combinations of laser colours and time characteristics to be shared by different end-stations minimising the need for laser duplications. This setup brings significant benefits in terms of cost effectiveness, ease of operation, and user safety. The modular nature of OCTOPUS also facilitates the addition of new techniques as required, allowing the use of existing lasers in new microscopes while retaining the ability to run the established parts of the facility. To date, techniques interlinked are multi-photon/multicolour confocal fluorescence lifetime imaging for several modalities of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) and time-resolved anisotropy, total internal reflection fluorescence, single molecule imaging of single pair FRET, single molecule fluorescence polarisation, particle tracking, and optical tweezers. Here, we use a well-studied system, the epidermal growth factor receptor network, to illustrate how OCTOPUS can aid in the investigation of complex biological phenomena.  相似文献
