This paper discusses the representational state transfer (REST) and service-oriented architecture (SOA) debate. The author tries to explain REST from the viewpoint of someone steeped in SOA, with the intention of helping SOA people understand the value the REST camp so rightfully touts     

Factors influencing learning through play in ICT settings

Using a mixed method approach of questionnaires, observations and field notes, the authors have studied a number of settings during the past two years which have focussed on the development of ICT capability through play. Some of these have involved children identified as disaffected or disadvantaged, whilst others have involved initial teacher education students. In this paper, we consider some of the results obtained from the most recent of these settings, relate these to those obtained from the other settings, and explore further a number of inter-related issues which have arisen from the analysis. We particularly focus on the effect of learners’ self-esteem and self-efficacy; the influence of gender-related characteristics; the role of interaction between learners during activity; and the value of reflection.

The dielectric response of doped semiconducting glasses

Measurements are reported of the dielectric properties of two semiconducting glasses of composition SiO₂ · Na₂O with admixtures of Sb_{2O 5} and SnO₂, covering a wide range of temperatures and a range of six decades of frequency 10^–2 to 10⁴ Hz. Both glasses show a gradual evolution of growing low frequency dispersion (LFD) with increasing temperature, with both the real and imaginary components of the complex susceptibility following a power law of the type ^n–1, with n 1 at the lowest frequencies. There are also clear indications of reversible phase transitions taking place which manifest themselves by changes in the spectral shape of the dielectric response.     

The Multifunctional Sactipeptide Ruminococcin C1 Displays Potent Antibacterial Activity In Vivo as Well as Other Beneficial Properties for Human Health

The world is on the verge of a major antibiotic crisis as the emergence of resistant bacteria is increasing, and very few novel molecules have been discovered since the 1960s. In this context, scientists have been exploring alternatives to conventional antibiotics, such as ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptides (RiPPs). Interestingly, the highly potent in vitro antibacterial activity and safety of ruminococcin C1, a recently discovered RiPP belonging to the sactipeptide subclass, has been demonstrated. The present results show that ruminococcin C1 is efficient at curing infection and at protecting challenged mice from Clostridium perfringens with a lower dose than the conventional antibiotic vancomycin. Moreover, antimicrobial peptide (AMP) is also effective against this pathogen in the complex microbial community of the gut environment, with a selective impact on a few bacterial genera, while maintaining a global homeostasis of the microbiome. In addition, ruminococcin C1 exhibits other biological activities that could be beneficial for human health, as well as other fields of applications. Overall, this study, by using an in vivo infection approach, confirms the antimicrobial clinical potential and highlights the multiple functional properties of ruminococcin C1, thus extending its therapeutic interest.
