Abstract

The dynamic deformation characteristics and failure behaviour of laminated carbon fibre reinforced Al–Li metal matrix composite has been studied experimentally with the objective of investigating the dependence of mechanical properties on the applied strain rate and fibre volume fraction. A vacuum melting/casting process was used for manufacturing the tested composite. Impact testing was performed using a Saginomiya 100 metal forming machine and a compressive split Hopkinson bar over a strain rate range of 10-1 s-1 to 3×103 s-1. It is shown that the flow stress of the composite increases with strain rate and fibre volume fraction. The highest elongation to fracture values were found at low rate loading conditions, although a significant increase in ductility is obtained in the dynamic range. The composite appears to exhibit a lower rate of work hardening during dynamic deformation. Strain rate sensitivity and activation volume are strongly dependent on strain rate and fibre volume fraction. Fractographic analysis using scanning electron microscopy reveals that there is a distinct difference in the morphologies of the fractures, with corresponding different damage mechanisms, between specimens tested at low and high strain rates. Both strain rate and fibre volume fraction are important in controlling fibre fragment length and the density of the Al–Li debris. The relationships between mechanical response and fracture characteristics are also discussed.  相似文献

Hispanic children are the fastest growing segment of the population. Numerous factors place them at-risk for school success. This study examined the effects of Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) compared to a curriculum-based small group intervention with 29 Hispanic children referred for school counseling due to behavior problems. Children were assigned to treatment groups by random drawing within grade levels. Treatment was provided by Hispanic bilingual counselors. Statistical analysis revealed that, according to parent report, children receiving CCPT showed statistically significant decreases in externalizing behavior problems, compared to the curriculum-based treatment group. Effect size calculations revealed that CCPT demonstrated a large treatment effect on externalizing behavior problems and a moderate treatment effect on internalizing behavior problems. The Laurentian Great Lakes are among the most prominent sources of fresh water in the world. Lake Erie's infamous cyanobacterial blooms have, however, threatened the health of this valuable freshwater resource for decades. Toxic blooms dominated by the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa have most recently been one of primary ecological concerns for the lake. These toxic blooms impact the availability of potable water, as well as public health and revenues from the tourism and fishery industries. The socioeconomic effects of these blooms have spurred research efforts to pinpoint factors that drive bloom events. Despite decades of research and mitigation efforts, these blooms have expanded both in size and duration in recent years. However, through continued joint efforts between the Canadian and United States governments, scientists, and environmental managers, identification of the factors that drive bloom events is within reach. This review provides a summary of historical and contemporary research efforts in the realm of Lake Erie's harmful cyanobacterial blooms, both in terms of experimental and management achievements and insufficiencies, as well as future directions on the horizon for the lake's research community.  相似文献

Shear deformation and fracture behaviors in polypropylene (PP)‐based model thermoplastic polyolefins (TPOs) were investigated with the Iosipescu shear test. The shear deformation process was monitored in situ via video camera to obtain experimental shear stress–strain curves of model TPOs. Shear fracture mechanisms were studied with optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Macroscopically, the cracks in neat PP propagated along the maximum shear plane, which indicated that mode‐II shear failure existed in neat PP. Microscopically, it was shown that shear fracture initiated in the form of partial, discontinuous inclined microcracks that later coalesced and formed the final continuous crack. The incorporation of rubber in PP could transform the shear fracture process into a stretching process in the shear damage zone. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The release of proteins and membrane vesicles in the bloodstream regulates diverse vascular processes, both physiological, such as angiogenesis and haemostasis, and pathological, such as atherosclerosis and atherothrombosis. Proteomics, beside its canonical application for the expression profiling in cells and organs, can be applied to the study of secreted proteins and microvesicles, which play a significant role in the homeostasis of the vasculature, and the development of the atherosclerotic disease.  相似文献

More than 70 % of women with ovarian cancer are diagnosed with advanced-stage disease, which is initially treated with cytoreductive surgery, and combination chemotherapy with platinum-based compounds. Most patients initially respond to platinum-based therapy, but eventually up to 80 % of this responsive cohort becomes refractory due to the development of platinum resistance. This review discusses current and potential therapeutic approaches that exploit biomaterial-based applications to combat platinum resistance either by enhancing the delivery of platinum-based drugs or prodrugs, delivering other toxic non-platinum-based bioactive factors (by themselves or in combination with platinum-based drugs) or by delivering other bioactive factors that re-sensitize resistant ovarian cancer cells to these drugs. The types of materials that are used, the bioactive factors applied (i.e., drug or gene delivery), and the specific agents that are employed to target these types of cancer cells are discussed. We conclude that the unique attributes of biomaterial-based applications can be further explored toward overcoming platinum-resistant ovarian cancer as monotherapy, or in combination with other treatment strategies.  相似文献
