Resonance assignment of methionine methyl groups and chi 3 angular information from long-range proton-carbon and carbon-carbon J correlation in a calmodulin-peptide complex

Several simple 3D experiments are used to provide J correlations between methionine C epsilon methyl carbons and either the C gamma H2 protons or C beta and C gamma. The intensity of the J correlations provides information on the size of the three-bond J couplings and thereby on the chi 3 torsion angle. In addition, a simple 3D version of the HMBC experiment provides a sensitive link between the C epsilon H3 methyl protons and C gamma. The methods are demonstrated for a 20 kDa complex between calmodulin and a 26-residue peptide fragment of skeletal muscle myosin light chain kinase.     

Radon as a risk factor for extra-pulmonary tumours

Most divers and diving medicine specialists know that application of normobaric oxygen as first aid after a bubble disease incident is highly effective. However, as yet technical difficulties acted as a deterrent to using normobaric oxygen at the diving site. This can now be overcome by a newer technique. To be efficient, any therapy of bubble disease should follow three main principles: maximal partial pressure of inhaled oxygen (i.e. 100 kpa in normobaric, and 280 kpa in hyperbaric conditions); minimal partial pressure of inhaled nitrogen, which should ideally be near zero; immediate start of therapy, if possible at the diving site, but not later than 2 hours after the onset of the first symptoms. However, it has to be borne in mind that for an efficient normobaric oxygenation (100%), the standard apparatus design without oxygen reservoir is obsolete, for it offers at most 40% oxygen to the lungs. Currently the following technical approaches for an efficient normobaric oxygenation are available: open one-way systems with tightly fitting mask and oxygen reservoir bag (type Ambu or Leardal, etc.); open systems with on-demand regulation and tightly fitting mouth piece (type SCUBA, or Bird-respirator); closed systems with CO2 absorber (type oxygen rebreathing diving gear). The closed system is a genuine technical advance, because it needs 15 times less oxygen than open systems (about 90 liters oxygen for a 3-hours oxygenation run). Such an apparatus is thus of light weight, far less cumbersome, and nevertheless highly efficient. The therapy should start immediately at the site of the mishap and be maintained during the transport to the next HBO-unit (usually 3 to 6 hours).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)     

Expression of laminin and nidogen genes during the postimplantation development of the mouse placenta

The expression patterns of laminin A, B1, B2, and nidogen genes were identified by in situ hybridization in postimplantation mouse extraembryonic tissues and maternal decidua during the period when the chorioallantoic placenta is established. Laminin and nidogen genes were not coordinately expressed either in the decidua or in trophoblast cells, indicating that these genes are regulated independently in these cell types during the establishment of the placenta. Laminin A mRNA was absent from the decidua except in the outer layer of cells adjacent to the myometrium and in the central decidual zone adjacent to the remnant of the uterine epithelium on Day 9. At this stage laminin B1, B2, and nidogen genes were strongly expressed in these cells and also in other regions of the decidua. Laminin B1 mRNA was present at higher levels in the decidua capsularis than in the decidua basalis, while nidogen mRNA showed highest expression in the decidua basalis. Laminin B2 mRNA was produced uniformly throughout the decidua at very high levels, suggesting that laminin B2 chains may be an important component of the decidual matrix. By Day 11, the nidogen gene was expressed only in endothelial cells lining the maternal blood spaces within the decidua. Laminin B1 and nidogen mRNAs were found at high levels within trophoblast giant cells at all stages, while laminin A mRNA was detected in trophoblast giant cells at later stages and laminin B2 mRNA was not produced in high levels by these cells. The patterns of gene expression show a very high degree of regional specialization, suggesting that the extracellular matrices in different regions of the decidua and extraembryonic membranes are likely to be composed of quite different ratios of laminin and nidogen polypeptides.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)     

Functional Properties and Food Applications of Rapeseed Protein Concentrate

Rapeseed protein concentrate (RC), prepared with 2% hexameta-phosphate, was tested for its functionality and performance in some foods. The RC had good nitrogen solubility, fat absorption, emulsification, and whipping capacities but poor water absorption and gelling properties. It increased the emulsion stability, and protein but lowered the fat content of wieners. It also increased the cooking yield, reduced the shrinkage and tenderized meat patties. Results were similar to soybean isolate except for the poorer color and flavor. The cooking yield of RC supplemented wieners was less than the all-meat control and soybean-supplemented wieners. A 9% RC dispersion mixed with an equal volume of eggwhite produced a meringue of comparable stability and texture to that of eggwhite alone.

Interdisciplinary research: roles for self-organization

No generally accepted principles and guidelines currently exist to help engineers design local interaction mechanisms that result in a desired global behavior. However, several communities have developed ways of approaching this problem in the context of niched application areas. Because the ideas underlying these approaches are often obscured or underemphasized in technical papers, the authors review the role of self-organization in their work. They provide a better picture of the status of the emerging field of self-organizing systems or autonomic computing.     

Representation as a fluent: an AI challenge for the next half century

The authors argued that AI systems must be able to manipulate their own internal representations automatically to deal with an infinitely complex and ever-changing world and to scale up to rich, complex applications. Such manipulation must go beyond changing beliefs and learning new concepts in terms of old concepts; it must be able to change ontology's underlying syntax and semantics. Initial progress has been made, but further progress is urgently needed owing to the demands of autonomous multiagent systems. Understanding and implementing this ability must be a major focus of AI for the next 50 years.     

OTDM transmitter using WDM-TDM conversion with an electroabsorptionwavelength converter

An all-optical multiplexing technique using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM)-time division multiplexing (TDM) conversion with an electroabsorption wavelength converter has been proposed and demonstrated. The effectiveness of this WDM-TDM conversion technique for various pulsewidth settings was experimentally investigated. The fluctuation of the signal performance, which was inevitably caused by the coherent crosstalk between adjacent pulses in the conventional optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) technique, were successfully suppressed, even in the case of wide pulse duration. High Q-factor performance has been maintained for a wide range of duty ration from 36% to 74%. By introducing this technique to the optical time division multiplexer, a highly stable and high-quality 40-Gb/s optical signal can be effectively produced without generating the short pulse or setting two tributaries at orthogonal polarization states, and without introducing high-speed electronics for signal multiplexing. The WDM-TDM conversion with an electroabsorption wavelength converter was extended to 60-Gb/s operation by using three 20-Gb/s tributaries.
