In scanned probe measurements of micrometer- or nanometer-scale lines, it is nearly impossible to maintain the sample in a perfectly level position, and even a small amount of tilt can contribute to the accuracy of the result of the measure such as linewidth or step height. The current practice in image processing to deal with this problem is to conduct a line-by-line analysis to find the best fit of the substrate profile and subtract this background from all data points, thus describing 3D plane turns as a series of lines and processing them in succession in the x- or y-direction.In this paper a coordinate transformation method is proposed. The new coordinate system can be established on the basis of the inclined angle of the sample as well as the translation of three axes between the old coordinate system and the new coordinate system. The method can mathematically derive and hence correct all tilts around the x-, y- and z-axes and produce a leveled image simultaneously. Feature dimensions such as width, height, sidewall angle and pitch are calculated on the basis of simulated images using the coordinate transformation method and other methods. In the quality control of engineering surfaces, we aim to understand and maintain a good relationship between the manufacturing process and surface function. This is achieved by controlling the surface texture. The control process involves: 1) learning the functional parameters and their control values through controlled experiments or through a long history of production and use; 2) maintaining high accuracy and reproducibility with measurements not only of roughness calibration specimens but also of real engineering parts. In this paper, the characteristics, utilizations, and limitations of different classes of precision roughness calibration specimens are described. A measuring procedure of engineering surfaces, based on the calibration procedure of roughness specimens at NIST, is proposed. This procedure involves utilization of check specimens with waveform, wavelength, and other roughness parameters similar to functioning engineering surfaces. These check specimens would be certified under standardized reference measuring conditions, or by a reference instrument, and could be used for overall checking of the measuring procedure and for maintaining accuracy and agreement in engineering surface measurement. The concept of “surface texture design” is also suggested, which involves designing the engineering surface texture, the manufacturing process, and the quality control procedure to meet the optimal functional needs. 相似文献

Atopy, specific IgE sensitization, and bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) were examined in a cohort of 769 apprentices starting career programs in animal health or veterinary medicine (Group 1), pastry making (Group 2), and dental hygiene (Group 3). The hypothesis were that: (1) a proportion of subjects can be "sensitized" although no significant specific occupational exposure has occurred; and (2) there is a relationship between baseline specific sensitization to work-related antigens and host characteristics. Skin tests were administered using 11 common inhalants and specific allergens, including six laboratory animal extracts, three cereal antigens, alpha-amylase, and latex. Methacholine challenge tests were performed. The prevalence of atopy was 54.4% in Group 1, 58.1% in Group 2, and 52.5% in Group 3. Skin reactivity to work-specific proteins was as follows: laboratory animal proteins, 13.8% in Group 1, 14.0% in Group 2, and 15.6% in Group 3. No subject was sensitized to alpha-amylase, whereas 1.2% in Group 1, 5% in Group 2, and 4.1% in Group 3 were sensitized to flour. Five subjects reacted to latex. BHR (PC20 < or = 8 mg/ml) was present in 17.6%, 21.2%, and 14.8% of subjects in Groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Specific sensitization was associated with positive skin reactions to common allergens, work-related symptoms, and BHR. These results suggest that students starting career programs with exposure to high-molecular-weight allergens have a low but substantial frequency of specific sensitization to work-related allergens that is related to atopy and BHR. 相似文献

Microscopy is a basic tool for cell biologists. Recent progress of electronics and computer science made powerful methodologies for digital processing of microscopic images easily available. These methods allowed impressive increase of the power of conventional microscopy. Dramatic image enhancement may be achieved by combination of filtering techniques, computer-based deblurring and contrast enhancement. Quantitative treatment of digitized images allows absolute determination of the density of different components of the observed sample, including antigens, intracellular calcium and pH. Morphometric studies are also greatly facilitated by image processing techniques. The capture of fast phenomena may be performed by transfer of small portion of microscopic images into computer memory as well as particular use of confocal microscopy. Finally, improved display of experimental data through coded colors or other procedures may enhance the amount of information that can be conveyed by visual examination of microscopical images. The purpose of the present review is to describe the basic principles of image processing and exemplify the power of this approach with a variety of illustrated applications to conventional, fluorescence or electron microscopy as well as confocal microscopy. 相似文献

Data on allelic polymorphism of MET and D7S23 DNA loci linked to the human cystic fibrosis gene studied in three Bashkir ethnic groups and some Volga-Ural populations (Tartars, Maris, Mordovians, Udmurts, Chuvashs, and Komis) are presented. Udmurts were found to be substantially different from Bashkirs, Tartars, Mordovians, and Chuvashs by the allele frequency distribution observed for MET, while Komis and Bashkirs differed by this parameter from Mordovians and Maris. Comparative analysis of restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) at the D7S23 locus revealed statistically significant differences in genotype frequencies between Bashkirs of the Arkhangel' skii region and populations of Mordva and Udmurtia. In this respect, the Mordovian population appeared to be notably different from the populations of Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, Marii-El, Udmurtiya, Chuvashiya, and Komis. Genetic distances were calculated and corresponding dendrograms were constructed on the basis of data on Met-H, CS.7, and the ApoB locus hypervariable region allelic frequencies. Three ethnogeographic Bashkir groups belonging to one tree branch were found to be closely related to the populations of Tartars, Maris, Udmurts, and Chuvashs and substantially different from Komis and Mordovians. Thus, the position of Volga-Ural populations on the dendrogram corresponds to the degree of relationship between the Finno-Ugric and Turkic populations, confirming the usefulness of DNA polymorphism analysis for the study of the genetic structure of populations. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To identify patient- and admission-related risk factors for a medically inappropriate admission to a department of internal medicine. METHODS: Cross-sectional study of a systematic sample of 500 admissions to the department of internal medicine of an urban teaching hospital. The appropriateness of each admission and reasons for inappropriate admissions were assessed using the Appropriateness Evaluation Protocol. Risk factors included the time (day of week and holidays) and manner (through emergency department or direct admission) of admission, patient age and sex, health status of patient and spouse, living arrangements, formal home care services, and informal support from family or friends. RESULTS: Overall, 76 (15.2%) hospital admissions were rated as medically inappropriate by the Appropriateness Evaluation Protocol. In multivariate analysis, the likelihood of an inappropriate admission was increased by better physical functioning of the patient (odds ratio [OR], 1.5; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.1-2.1 [for 1 SD in Physical Functioning scores]), lower mental health status of the patient's spouse (OR, 2.6; 95% CI, 1.3-5.6), receipt of informal help from family or friends (OR, 3.3; 95% CI, 1.5-7.2), and hospitalization by one's physician (OR, 3.6; 95% CI, 1.7-7.5). Receiving formal adult home care was not associated with inappropriateness of hospitalization. CONCLUSIONS: Inappropriate admissions to internal medicine wards are determined by a mix of factors, including the patient's health and social environment. In addition, the private practitioners' discretionary ability to hospitalize their patients directly may also favor medically inappropriate admissions. 相似文献

Spontaneous mouse mutations that cause severe immunodeficiency or autoimmunity are invaluable tools with which to investigate the mammalian immune system. Mutations at the 'motheaten' locus result in severe immunological dysfunction due to disruption of the structural gene encoding Src-homology 2-domain phosphatase-1 (SHP-1). Complaints of daytime dysfunction are common among chronic insomniacs, but laboratory comparisons of insomniacs and age-matched and gender-matched normal controls have generally failed to document these complaints. However, a few studies, which allowed subjects to sleep in their homes on the nights before daytime testing, have shown some relative diurnal deficits among insomniacs. The current study compared the effects of nocturnal laboratory and home polysomnogram (PSG) studies on subsequent daytime test results among older insomniacs and normal sleepers. Insomniacs (n = 32) and normal sleepers (n = 32) were randomly assigned to first undergo three nights of nocturnal PSG monitoring either in the sleep laboratory (16 insomniacs, 16 normal sleepers) or in their homes (16 insomniacs, 16 normal sleepers). Following the third night of PSG monitoring, subjects spent 1 day in the sleep laboratory, where they completed a four-trial multiple sleep latency test along with four trials of a computer-administered performance test battery. Results showed that insomniacs, as a group, were slightly, albeit consistently, sleepier than were normal sleepers following nights of home sleep monitoring, but a reverse of this trend was found among subjects who underwent nocturnal laboratory PSG before daytime testing. Furthermore, normal sleepers showed faster reaction times on a signal detection task than did insomniacs within the subgroup who underwent home PSGs prior to such testing. However, within the subgroup that underwent nocturnal laboratory PSGs, insomniacs' signal detection reaction times were significantly faster than those shown by normal sleepers. Results provide some support for the speculation that the nocturnal PSG monitoring site, used as a precursor to daytime testing, may systematically affect daytime comparisons between insomniacs and matched controls. Moreover, these results suggest that the use of home-based nocturnal PSG monitoring prior to daytime testing may provide an enhanced understanding of insomniacs' diurnal complaints. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: It is necessary to have thorough knowledge of the survival of extreme low birth weight infants (ELBWI) in order to make it easier for obstetricians, neonatologists and the family to make a decision. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A revision of the 100 ELBWI in our service between 1988 and 1995, considering live births, those deceased in the same birthing room and those followed until their discharge from the hospital, was performed. The differences between the periods before and after the introduction of pulmonary surfactant in 1992 were analyzed. RESULTS: The total survival was 37% for those with a birth weight superior to 750 g or 26 weeks gestation. There were 44.2% males and 28.9% females. The total survival improved from 26.1% during 1988-1991 to 46.3% during the period of 1992-1995. During this period (1992-1995), the newborns weighing more than 750 g had a survival rate of 72.4% and for those of 26 weeks gestation it was 73.3%. Those born at 28 weeks gestation and those with 25 weeks of gestation and weighing more than 750 g, the total survival was 63% and the survival rate in the last four years was 75.9%. CONCLUSIONS: The mortality of the ELBWI descends in similar proportion to the remainder fo the ELBWI. In order to predict the prognosis, it would be necessary to carry out a correct ultrasound estimation of the gestational age and weight. It is necessary to offer a mother in the process of childbirth with a fetus of 28 weeks gestation or with 25 weeks gestation and a fetus with an ultrasound weight greater than 750 g, intrapartum fetal monitoring and to finish by Cesarean section in case of acute fetal distress, as well as intense and immediate neonatal attention as indicated by the index of survival reached in the group mentioned during the later years. 相似文献
