In 1966, after finishing only my first year of a residency program, I went to the US to study for 2.5 years with Dr Albert M. Kligman the analysis of functional properties of various skin changes in vivo using aged skin, various types of dermatitis and topically applied steroid-induced atrophy as experimental models. Ten years later, I luckily found that measurements of high frequency conductance and capacitance of the skin enable us to evaluate the skin surface hydration state that determines the softness and smoothness of the skin and in particular to detect even subtle skin changes induced by changes in our environmental or by the application of skincare products and cosmetics. Employing such noninvasive biophysical instruments, I have analyzed the functional properties of normal and abnormal skin changes including subclinical skin changes such as atopic xerosis, senile xerosis, scars and effects of various topical and systemic agents. From these studies it became apparent that as long as a certain level of barrier function was retained skin surface hydration is a more important factor for enjoying a good quality of life. We also succeeded in confirming the effect of corneotherapy, the term so pertinently suggested by Dr Kligman for the beneficial effects of skincare products. We could show that their daily application definitely improves the condition of subclinical skin problems. Further progress in such instrumental analysis of skin properties will greatly aid us in the future in selecting a more desirable skincare product on an individual basis.  相似文献

The face is composed of complicated anatomical components, presenting unique portions, such as the eyes, nose and mouth in a relatively narrow area. Moreover, the facial skin is densely populated by the pilosebaceous units and sweat glands, and its stratum corneum (SC) is much thinner than that of the trunk and limbs, although it is always exposed to the environment. Among various portions of the facial skin, some are more easily irritated than others by environmental stimuli, or are more often affected by certain dermatoses. However, the functional aspects of the different portions of the facial skin have not been studied in detail under a strictly controlled environment in sufficiently large numbers of subjects covering different age groups. Thus, we conducted studies in winter with various biophysical techniques, such as transepidermal water loss (TEWL), as a parameter for SC barrier function, high-frequency conductance as that for skin surface hydration state, skin surface lipids, pH, blood flow and skin surface temperature on the forehead, mid-portion of the cheek (cheek in short), nasal tip (nose in short), nasolabial fold and chin of 20 healthy Japanese females aged 22-37 years (average 25 years) in a climate chamber adjusted to 21 degrees C and 50% relative humidity. Thereafter, we studied the influence of ageing on these biophysical parameters by collecting data of TEWL, high-frequency conductance and size of superficial corneocytes on the cheek, nasolabial fold and chin of 303 healthy Japanese female volunteers of different ages. The obtained results showed that the barrier function of the SC was best on the cheek, presenting the lowest TEWL, which was significantly higher on the nasolabial fold and chin than on the cheek. TEWL showed a decrease with age. In contrast, skin hydration state was higher on the nose, but it tended to be lower on the nasolabial fold, showing a mild age-related increase. The corneocytes on the nasolabial fold and chin were smaller than those on the cheek. They revealed a clear increase in size with age. Skin surface lipids were richest on the nose, whereas the superficial pH on the nose was the lowest among the regions tested. The skin temperature was lowest on the cheek than on other areas of the face; although, together with the nose, its blood flow was higher than that of the others. These data indicate great regional differences observable in SC functions on the face. In general, the SC barrier function increases with age, probably because of a decreased epidermal turnover rate as recognized by the increase in corneocyte size. Among the various sites, the skin of the nasolabial fold and chin, whose SC consisted of the smallest corneocytes, showed poorest SC properties in barrier function, suggesting the presence of mild invisible inflammation. It is understandable that this area easily develops not only the complaint of sensitive skin to cosmetics but also dermatitis because of various external agents.  相似文献

Studies on debris bed self-leveling behavior with non-spherical particles are crucial in the assessment of actual leveling behavior that could occur in core disruptive accident of sodium-cooled fast reactors. Although in our previous publications, a simple empirical model (based model), with its wide applicability confirmed over various experimental conditions, has been successfully advanced to predict the transient leveling behavior, up until now this model is restricted to calculations of debris bed of spherical particles. Focusing on this aspect, in this study a series of experiments using non-spherical particles was performed within a recently developed comparatively larger scale experimental facility. Based on the knowledge and data obtained, an extension scheme was suggested with the intention to extend the base model to cover the particle-shape influence. The proposed scheme principally consists of two parts – with one part for correcting the terminal velocity of a single non-spherical particle, which is the key parameter in our base model, and the other for representing the additional particle–particle interactions caused by the shape-related parameters. Through detailed analyses, it is found that by coupling this scheme, good agreement between experimental and predicted results can be achieved for both spherical and non-spherical particles given current range of experimental conditions.  相似文献

Nuclear weapons tests conducted by the United States in the Marshall Islands produced significant quantities of regional or tropospheric fallout contamination. Here we report on some preliminary inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) measurements of plutonium isolated from seven composite soil samples collected from Bikini, Enewetak and Rongelap Atolls in the northern Marshall Islands. These data show that 240Pu/239Pu isotopic signatures in surface soils from the Marshall Island vary significantly and could potentially be used to help quantify the range and extent of fallout deposition (and associated impacts) from specific weapons tests. 137Cs and 60Co were also determined on the same set of soil samples for comparative purposes.  相似文献

The morphological analysis of the ground and unground enamel was treated with three different self-etching adhesive systems. Ultrastructural features were observed by using the field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) in combination with Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. Thirty extracted human molars were used for this study. Teeth were divided into two groups. In the first group unground enamel was etched with either Clearfil SE Bond (Kuraray-Japan), G Bond (GC-Japan) or Tri S Bond (Kuraray-Japan) according to the manufactures instructions. In the second group ground enamel was treated as above. In addition 24 ungrounded and grounded enamel specimens were etched and bonded with the three self-etching adhesives and restored with composite resin (Clearfil ST-Kuraray). Then they were cross-sectioned and interfacial analysis was done with the combination of EDS analysis. Etching patterns of the enamel varied according to the self-etching adhesive. Clearfil SE Bond produced micro-irregular etching pattern creating crater like area in ground enamel while other two produced mild etching pattern. All three adhesives produced incomplete etching on unground enamel. Interfacial studies showed demineralization for the bonding agent penetration and the formation of hybrid layer. The self-etching adhesives produced different specific SEM morphologies on unground and ground enamel.  相似文献

Track-edge noise has been analyzed to clarify track-edge noise mechanisms. Edge noise arises from two different regions: the bit edge where the magnetization direction is opposite to the previously dc-erased direction and the magnetic transition edge. The edge noise at low density is mainly due to the magnetic distribution at the bit edge. The transition edge noise increases with increasing recording density, and it becomes dominant at high-recording density for an oriented medium. On the other hand, the transition edge noise is almost constant with increasing recording density for an isotropic medium  相似文献

The proteinase responsible for bone collagen degradation in osteo-resorption was examined. The bone pit formation induced by parathyroid hormone (PTH) was markedly suppressed by leupeptin, E-64 and cystatin A, while no inhibition was observed by CA-074, a specific inhibitor of cathepsin B. Pig leucocyte cysteine proteinase inhibitor (PLCPI), a specific inhibitor of cathepsin L, and chymostatin, a selective inhibitor of cathepsin L, completely inhibited the pit formation. Cathepsin L activity in osteoclasts was much higher than the other cathepsin activities. Serum calcium in rats placed on a low calcium diet was decreased by treatment of E-64 or cystatin A, but not by CA-074. These findings suggest that cathepsin L is the main proteinase responsible for bone collagen degradation.  相似文献

We describe the design concept and performance of a 3-bit soft-decision IC, which opens a vista for new terabit-capacity optical communication systems by dramatically improving the capability of forward error correction (FEC). The proposed soft-decision IC is composed of five functional blocks, i.e., a soft-decider, an error filter, a 3-bit encoder, a 3:48 de-multiplexer, and a clock recovery circuit. The biggest challenge was the soft-decision block regenerating the common data using seven deciders with separate thresholds. We employed a novel SiGe BiCMOS process and a custom BGA package made from low-temperature co-fired ceramics to achieve a high sensitivity of 20 mVpp with a wide phase margin of 270/spl deg/ for 12.4-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) data signals. The error filter and the 3-bit encoder, which are incorporated in the IC, prevent the degradation of the FEC performance due to signal noise or fluctuations. The 3:48 de-multiplexer provides an accessible interface with the FEC encoder/decoder LSI. The clock recovery circuit, based on a phase-locked-loop technology, fulfilled the jitter tolerance requirements corresponding to ITU-T G.825, even for 55% duty cycle optical return-to-zero (RZ) signals. The 3-bit soft-decision IC, in cooperation with a block turbo encoder/decoder, achieved a record net coding gain of 10.1 dB with 24.6% redundancy, which is only 0.9 dB away from the Shannon limit for a code rate of 0.8 for a binary symmetric channel.  相似文献

Magnetic anisotropies were investigated for CoCr perpendicular magnetic films on grooved structure substrates (pitch length 2.1 μm) prepared by CF4-reactive-ion etching. Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy decreases in the region where groove depth GD >650 A. The reduction is due to the inclination of the crystal growth axis on the groove surface. In-plane magnetic anisotropy, Ku∥, strongly depends on GD and saturation magnetization Ms. In a region of large GD and large Ms, Ku is mainly due to shape anisotropy. In a region of small GD and small Ms , Ku∥ is caused by perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, in addition to shape and magnetorestrictive anisotropy  相似文献
