Eighteen novel human genes regionally mapped on chromosome 11

The list of LDL receptor superfamily relatives is still growing. The two most recently discovered family branches are (1) a set of receptors characterized by expression in brain and a very close relationship to the LDL and VLDL receptors, and (2) highly cross-species (man, mouse, rabbit, chicken) conserved complex mosaic receptors which contain structural domains so far not found in the superfamily. At present, we know very little about the physiological function(s) of these molecules. They can be safely assumed, based on the presence of seven, eight or 11 clustered LDL receptor ligand binding repeats, to recognize mammalian apolipoprotein E but, based on the absence of apolipoprotein E in birds, they may exhibit interactions quite different from and/or in addition to typical lipoprotein receptors in vivo.     

Consideration of allowable flaw size for pressurized pipes

Failure strength for circumferentially and axially cracked Type 304 stainless steel pipes is evaluated based on the net-stress approach. Using this approach, allowable flaw sizes for pipes containing circumferential or axial cracks are considered from the leakage and breakage viewpoint.     

Existence of the coaxing effect and effects of small artificial holes on fatigue strength of an aluminum alloy and 70-30 brass

In order to study the existence of the coaxing effect and the effects of small defects on the fatigue strength of an aluminum alloy and 70-30 brass, plain specimens and special holed specimens containing one or more very small drilled holes with diameters of 40,50,100,200, and 500 ώm were prepared. Contrary to commonly accepted knowledge, the existence of a distinct coaxing effect was confirmed in the fatigue test on 2017-T4 aluminum alloy. However, the coaxing effect was not confirmed in the fatigue test on 70-30 brass, though specimens with small artificial holes could contain non-propagating cracks at the fatigue limit. It was found that the appearance of the coaxing effect depends on the endurance at a higher stress level of small cracks initiated at a lower stress level. The very small drilled holes with diameters of 40 and 50 ώm had no harmful effect on the fatigue strength of both the aluminum alloy and 70-30 brass; that is, the fatigue limits of specimens containing one or more drilled holes with diameters of 40 and 50 ώm were identical with those of the plain specimens.     

Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome (?) and Prader-Willi syndrome (?) in a single family

Mental retardation, hypogonadism, obesity, and abnormal blood sugar regulation were common findings in two siblings. In addition, the 17-year-old female patient showed short stature, muscular hypotonia in infancy, and small hands with tapering fingers suggesting Prader-Willi syndrome, and the 12-year-old male patient showed retinitis pigmentosa, normal height, and normal muscular tonicity suggesting Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome, though polydactyly was absent. Possible consideration was discussed.     

Virtual manufacturing for sheet metal processing (Development of scheduling simulator for small scale job shop)

Virtual processing in punching and laser cutting of thin metal sheet is tried with a software named IGRIP. Estimation for processing time for both process by virtual machine agrees well with the real processing time. Using newly developed scheduling simulator, several optimum sequences of parts in job shop type production can be found out besides the sequence selected by Johnson's rule. Extended Johnson's rule, which can treat set-up time and plural lot size, is introduced.     

International intercomparison of laser power at 633 nm

An international intercomparison of laser power at 633 nm has recently been completed. This comparison was initiated at a meeting of the High Frequency Working Group of CCE/CIPM in October, 1972.     

Chirping compensation using a two-section semiconductor laseramplifier

Compensation of light source chirping and optical fiber dispersion using semiconductor laser amplifiers (SLAs) is investigated using a modeling equation that describes the opposite phase characteristics of light sources to SLAs with self phase modulation. A two-section SLA was fabricated in order to achieve an amplifier with both high gain and phase compensation properties. Preliminary experimental results are presented, confirming the theoretically derived phase compensation effect
