The relation of physician and patient gender to verbal and nonverbal communication was examined in 100 routine medical visits. Female physicians conducted longer visits, made more positive statements, made more partnership statements, asked more questions, made more back-channel responses, and smiled and nodded more. Patients made more partnership statements and gave more medical information to female physicians. The combinations of female physician–female patient and female physician–male patient received special attention in planned contrasts. These combinations showed distinctive patterns of physician and patient behavior, especially in nonverbal communication. The relation of the results to gender differences in nonclinical settings, role strains in medical visits, and current trends in medical education are discussed. Sintering resistance of a novel thermal barrier coating NdxZr1 − xOy with Z dissolved in, where 0 < x < 0.5, 1.75 < y < 2 and Z is an oxide of a metal selected from Y, Mg, Ca, Hf and mixtures thereof, was studied. The coatings of NdxZr1 − xOy and typical 7YSZ were deposited by electron beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) and air plasma spray (APS). The samples with the coating system of EB-PVD NdxZr1 − xOy or 7YSZ overlaid onto a MCrAlY bond coat were cyclically sintered at 1107 °C for 706 hours. The freestanding coatings of EB-PVD NdxZr1 − xOy and 7YSZ were isothermally sintered at 1371 °C for 500 hours. The microstructure of EB-PVD NdxZr1 − xOy before and after the sintering was evaluated and compared with EB-PVD 7YSZ. The sintering resistance of freestanding APS NdxZr1 − xOy coating was also investigated after isothermal sintering at 1200 °C for 50 and 100 hours. The results demonstrated that the new coatings of NdxZr1 − xOy applied with both EB-PVD and APS have higher sintering resistance than EB-PVD and APS 7YSZ, respectively. 相似文献

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease that causes a hyperglycemic status which leads, over time, to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves. The most frequent form of diabetes is type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) which is often part of a metabolic syndrome (hyperglycaemia, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, abdominal obesity) that usually requires the use of several medications from different drug classes to bring each of these conditions under control. T2DM is associated with an increase in inflammatory markers such as interleukin-6 (IL-6) and the tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α). Higher levels of IL-6 and TNF-α are associated with a downregulation of several drug metabolizing enzymes, especially the cytochrome P450 (P450) isoforms CYP3As and CYP2C19. A decrease in these P450 isoenzymes may lead to unexpected rise in plasma levels of substrates of these enzymes. It could also give rise to a mismatch between the genotypes determined for these enzymes, the predicted phenotypes based on these genotypes and the phenotypes observed clinically. This phenomenon is described as phenoconversion. Phenoconversion typically results from either a disease (such as T2DM) or concomitant administration of medications inducing or inhibiting (including competitive or non-competitive inhibition) a P450 isoenzyme used by other substrates for their elimination. Phenoconversion could have a significant impact on drug effects and genotypic-focused clinical outcomes. As the aging population is exposed to polypharmacy along with inflammatory comorbidities, consideration of phenoconversion related to drug metabolizing enzymes is of importance when applying pharmacogenomic results and establishing personalized and more precise drug regimens. 相似文献

A systematic examination was made of the plant family Apiaceae (Umbelliferae) in which extracts of 33 species, representing 32 genera, were screened for antifeedant activity against the field slug Deroceras reticulatum by using an electrophysiological recording assay. In this assay, the olfactory sensory epithelium of the posterior tentacle of the slug was exposed to volatile components of the plant extracts presented in an airstream, and any subsequent activity of the olfactory nerve was recorded. Extracts of 22 species elicited a range of nervous activity in the preparation. A feeding bioassay was used to measure any change in consumption when extracts were added to a standard food. Statistical analysis of data obtained from both electrophysiological traces and the feeding bioassays identified extracts of Petroselinum crispum, Conium maculatum, and Coriandrum sativum as being the most neuroactive as well as the most antifeedant. 相似文献

Platinum resistance is a major cause of treatment failure in ovarian cancer. We previously identified matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) as a potential therapeutic target of chemoresistant disease. A2780cis (cisplatin-resistant) and A2780 (cisplatin-sensitive) ovarian carcinoma cell lines were used. The cytotoxic effect of MMP-9/MMP-2 inhibitor, (2R)-2-[(4-Biphenylsulfonyl) amino]-3 phenylpropionic acid (C21H19NO4S) alone or in combination with cisplatin was determined using high content screening. Protein expression was examined using immunohistochemistry and ELISA. Co-incubation of cisplatin and an MMP-9/MMP-2 inhibitor, (2R)-2-[(4-Biphenylsulfonyl) amino]-3 phenylpropionic acid (C21H19NO4S) resulted in significantly greater cytotoxicity as compared to either treatment alone in a cisplatin resistant MMP-9 overexpressing cell line; A2780cis. In addition, pre-incubating with MMP-9i prior to cisplatin further enhances the cytotoxic effect. No significant difference was observed in MMP-9 protein in tissue but a trend towards increased MMP-9 was observed in recurrent serum. We propose that MMP-9/MMP-2i may be utilized in the treatment of recurrent/chemoresistant ovarian cancers that overexpress MMP-9 mRNA but its role in vivo remains to be evaluated. 相似文献

Saturation mutagenesis (SM) constitutes a widely used technique in the directed evolution of selective enzymes as catalysts in organic chemistry and in the manipulation of metabolic paths and genomes, but the quality of the libraries is far from optimal due to the inherent amino acid bias. Herein, it is shown how this fundamental problem can be solved by applying high‐fidelity solid‐phase chemical gene synthesis on silicon chips followed by efficient gene assembly. Limonene epoxide hydrolase was chosen as the catalyst in the model desymmetrization of cyclohexene oxide with the stereoselective formation of (R,R)‐ and (S,S)‐cyclohexane‐1,2‐diol. A traditional combinatorial PCR‐based SM library, produced by simultaneous randomization at several residues by using a reduced amino acid alphabet, and the respective synthetic library were constructed and compared. Statistical analysis at the DNA level with massive sequencing demonstrates that, in the synthetic approach, 97 % of the theoretically possible DNA mutants are formed, whereas the traditional SM library contained only about 50 %. Screening at the protein level also showed the superiority of the synthetic library; many highly (R,R)‐ and (S,S)‐selective variants being discovered are not found in the traditional SM library. With the prices of synthetic genes decreasing, this approach may point the way to future directed evolution. 相似文献

The redox features and the catalytic activities of ceria nanowires, nanorods and nanoparticles were comparatively studied. The morphology-dependent phenomenon is closely related to the nature of the exposed crystal planes. The CeO2 nanoparticles mainly expose the stable {1 1 1} plane on the surface, whereas the rod-shaped nanostructures preferentially expose the reactive {1 1 0} and {1 0 0} planes, giving higher oxygen storage capacity and catalytic activity for CO oxidation. Although both the CeO2 nanorods and the CeO2 nanowires predominantly expose the reactive {1 1 0} and {1 0 0} planes, the CeO2 nanowires favor to expose a large proportion of active planes on the surface, resulting in a much higher activity for CO oxidation than the nanorods. 相似文献
