We propose a novel conservative visibility culling technique based on the Prioritized-Layered Projection (PLP) algorithm. PLP is a time-critical rendering technique that computes, for a given viewpoint, a partially correct image by rendering only a subset of the geometric primitives, those that PLP determines to be most likely visible. Our new algorithm builds on PLP and provides an efficient way of finding the remaining visible primitives. We do this by adding a second phase to PLP which uses image-space techniques for determining the visibility status of the remaining geometry. Another contribution of our work is to show how to efficiently implement such image-space visibility queries using currently available OpenGL hardware and extensions. We report on the implementation of our techniques on several graphics architectures, analyze their complexity, and discuss a possible hardware extension that has the potential to further increase performance 相似文献

Building visualization and analysis pipelines is a large hurdle in the adoption of visualization and workflow systems by domain scientists. In this paper, we propose techniques to help users construct pipelines by consensus--automatically suggesting completions based on a database of previously created pipelines. In particular, we compute correspondences between existing pipeline subgraphs from the database, and use these to predict sets of likely pipeline additions to a given partial pipeline. By presenting these predictions in a carefully designed interface, users can create visualizations and other data products more efficiently because they can augment their normal work patterns with the suggested completions. We present an implementation of our technique in a publicly-available, open-source scientific workflow system and demonstrate efficiency gains in real-world situations. 相似文献

This paper analyzes the application of Moran’s index and Geary’s coefficient to the characterization of lung nodules as malignant
or benign in computerized tomography images. The characterization method is based on a process that verifies which combination
of measures, from the proposed measures, has been best able to discriminate between the benign and malignant nodules using
stepwise discriminant analysis. Then, a linear discriminant analysis procedure was performed using the selected features to
evaluate the ability of these in predicting the classification for each nodule. In order to verify this application we also
describe tests that were carried out using a sample of 36 nodules: 29 benign and 7 malignant. A leave-one-out procedure was
used to provide a less biased estimate of the linear discriminator’s performance. The two analyzed functions and its combinations
have provided above 90% of accuracy and a value area under receiver operation characteristic (ROC) curve above 0.85, that
indicates a promising potential to be used as nodules signature measures. The preliminary results of this approach are very
encouraging in characterizing nodules using the two functions presented.

While there have been advances in visualization systems, particularly in multi-view visualizations and visual exploration, the process of building visualizations remains a major bottleneck in data exploration. We show that provenance metadata collected during the creation of pipelines can be reused to suggest similar content in related visualizations and guide semi-automated changes. We introduce the idea of query-by-example in the context of an ensemble of visualizations, and the use of analogies as first-class operations in a system to guide scalable interactions. Even before the birth of Prince Henry the Navigator (1394) Portugal had displayed a maritime calling due to its 500-mile shore line and numerous natural bays. Inspired by the riches of India he saw during the Portuguese exploration along the coast of West Africa, Prince Henry set out methodically to collect information by bringing together Jews and Moors with geographical knowledge to found his School of Navigation. From 1415 until his death in 1460 he attracted to his school the foremost contemporary scholars in mathematics, astronomy, and cartography along with experts in knowledge of the compass, astrolabe, water currents, and the winds. This concentration of talent yielded the invention of the caravel, the most important navigational advancement of the time, crucial for long voyages across the high seas. Although the rest of Europe busied itself in political and religious wars, for 70 years (1415-1492) Portugal alone pursued the discovery of the Atlantic. Compact yet efficient hardware implementation of artificial neural networks with customized topology

There are several neural network implementations using either software, hardware-based or a hardware/software co-design. This work proposes a hardware architecture to implement an artificial neural network (ANN), whose topology is the multilayer perceptron (MLP). In this paper, we explore the parallelism of neural networks and allow on-the-fly changes of the number of inputs, number of layers and number of neurons per layer of the net. This reconfigurability characteristic permits that any application of ANNs may be implemented using the proposed hardware. In order to reduce the processing time that is spent in arithmetic computation, a real number is represented using a fraction of integers. In this way, the arithmetic is limited to integer operations, performed by fast combinational circuits. A simple state machine is required to control sums and products of fractions. Sigmoid is used as the activation function in the proposed implementation. It is approximated by polynomials, whose underlying computation requires only sums and products. A theorem is introduced and proven so as to cover the arithmetic strategy of the computation of the activation function. Thus, the arithmetic circuitry used to implement the neuron weighted sum is reused for computing the sigmoid. This resource sharing decreased drastically the total area of the system. After modeling and simulation for functionality validation, the proposed architecture synthesized using reconfigurable hardware. The results are promising. 相似文献

Network-on-chip (NoC) are considered the next generation of communication infrastructure in embedded systems. In the platform-based design methodology, an application is implemented by a set of collaborative intellectual property (IP) blocks. The selection of the most suited set of IPs as well as their physical mapping onto the NoC infrastructure to implement efficiently the application at hand are two hard combinatorial problems that occur during the synthesis process of Noc-based embedded system implementation. In this paper, we propose an innovative preference-based multi-objective evolutionary methodology to perform the assignment and mapping stages. We use one of the well-known and efficient multi-objective evolutionary algorithms NSGA-II and microGA as a kernel. The optimization processes of assignment and mapping are both driven by the minimization of the required silicon area and imposed execution time of the application, considering that the decision maker’s preference is a pre-specified value of the overall power consumption of the implementation. 相似文献

The 3D flow around a rigid spherical particle suspended in a Newtonian fluid and submitted to simple shear is numerically studied using Rem3D® finite element code. The sphere motion is imposed by a sticking contact between the sphere and the fluid. The effect of the particle size as compared with the finite dimension of the shear cell was investigated. The direct calculations show that 3D modelling is necessary to correctly predict the sphere behaviour. The proximity of the particle and the cell walls strongly affects the flow velocities, the sphere motion (increase of the rotation period of the sphere) and the stress field (change of orientation angle and increase of maximal local stresses). 相似文献
