RCRA toxicity characterization of discarded electronic devices   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The potential for discarded electronic devices to be classified as toxicity characteristic (TC) hazardous waste under provisions of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) using the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) was examined. The regulatory TCLP method and two modified TCLP methods (in which devices were disassembled and leached in or near entirety) were utilized. Lead was the only element found to leach at concentrations greater than its TC limit (5 mg/L). Thirteen different types of electronic devices were tested using either the standard TCLP or modified versions. Every device type leached lead above 5 mg/L in at least one test and most devices leached lead above the TC limit in a majority of cases. Smaller devices that contained larger amounts of plastic and smaller amounts of ferrous metal (e.g., cellular phones, remote controls) tended to leach lead above the TC limit at a greater frequency than devices with more ferrous metal (e.g., computer CPUs, printers).  相似文献

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is an encapsulated Gram-positive bacterial pathogen that causes severe perinatal infections. Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are short-chain sugars that have recently been shown to possess antimicrobial and anti-biofilm activity against a variety of bacterial pathogens, including GBS. We have expanded these studies to demonstrate that HMOs can inhibit and dismantle biofilm in both invasive and colonizing strains of GBS. A cohort of 30 diverse strains of GBS were analyzed for susceptibility to HMO-dependent biofilm inhibition or destruction. HMOs were significantly effective at inhibiting biofilm in capsular-type- and sequence-type-specific fashion, with significant efficacy in CpsIb, CpsII, CpsIII, CpsV, and CpsVI strains as well as ST-1, ST-12, ST-19, and ST-23 strains. Interestingly, CpsIa as well as ST-7 and ST-17 were not susceptible to the anti-biofilm activity of HMOs, underscoring the strain-specific effects of these important antimicrobial molecules against the perinatal pathogen Streptococcus agalactiae.  相似文献

In contrast to current composite‐metal electroplating, where objects are submerged into a liquid bath, a bathless aqueous inorganic electroplating method is investigated to increase composite loading and incorporation of large hygroscopic particles. This method can be applied as a stamping coating onto large or irregular conductive objects without the need for an electrolyte bath. Instead of stirring in solution, the composite particles are trapped in the electrolyte and forced to plate within the metal matrix. In this set‐up, a nickel salt mixture containing the composite is applied to the cathode and is separated from the anode with an ion‐permeable membrane. As a proof of concept, large noncharged fluorescent composite particles are electrochemically embedded via electrochemical reduction of nickel salts resulting in up to 80 ± 12% surface area coverage after controlling deposition parameters of current density and duration. Long persistent afterglow SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ phosphor powder is chosen because of its large crystal size (87 ± 30 µm) and hygroscopic nature. The photoluminescent quantum yield is measured and compared to the composite coatings, which reaches up to 9.9 ± 0.8% after 18 h of coating. Film morphology, phosphor surface loading, and film thickness are characterized by optical microscopy.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with a procedure for the automatic generation of code for programmable logic controllers. Input to the procedure is data from a graphical model of the discrete event dynamic system which is to be implemented. The model is constructed in the form of a ladder diagram at a graphics workstation. The data are held as Prolog tuples, and Prolog is used in the procedure to implement a rule base through which the data are mapped into the programmable logic controller code. Underlying the rule base are two methodologies. The first is a top-down decomposition of the ladder diagram to a level of three basic structures. The second is a bottom-up integration of code based on these structures into code for the whole system. An example is used throughout and the approach is shown to be effective.  相似文献

Study of the solubilization of commercial grades of soya phosphatidylcholine (SPC) with different purities by bile salts (BS) indicated that only highly pure grades of SPC are suitable for the preparation of clear solutions of BS/SPC-mixed micelles (BS/SPC-MM). The solubilizing capacity of different BS towards SPC increased in the following order; Sodium cholate (SC) < sodium deoxycholate (SDC) < sodium glycocholate (SGC). Moreover, egg phosphatidylcholine (EPC) was solubilized to a higher extent than SPC. Furthermore, the solubility study of different drugs in the prepared MM showed substantial enhancement of solubility, the extent of which is essentially affected by the chemical nature of the drug and the composition of MM. Benzodiazepine drugs such as clonazepam, tetrazepam, diazepam, and lorazepam displayed higher affinity for MM compared with BS alone, whereas steroidal drugs, such as estradiol, prednisolone and progesterone, compared with benzodiazepines, displayed relatively higher affinity for BS alone. The solubilizing capacity of MM for the different drugs was increased to different degrees by the addition of benzyl alcohol which was comparable to the solubility of the drug in pure benzyl alcohol. The interaction between benzyl alcohol and the drug in MM could be proved by NMR.  相似文献

Respiratory information can be obtained from the changes in electrical impedance across the chest, the electrocardiogram or the changes in light absorption across the finger. Running estimates of the breathing rate from each of these can be obtained from independent Kalman filters. A robust estimate of breathing rate is derived by fusing the outputs of these independent Kalman filters using a weighting calculated from the squared differences between each prediction from the filters and the corresponding measurements.  相似文献

Acetylenic acids such as 5,8,11,14-eicosatetraynoic acid (ETYA), have been shown to be effective in preventing pulmonary edema formation (PEF). In phosgene-exposed guinea pigs, we examined the effects of ETYA on PEF, measured as real time lung weight gain (lwg). Pulmonary artery pressure (Ppa), airway pressure (Paw), perfusate leukotrienes (LT) C4/D4/E4/B4, and lung tissue lipid peroxidation (TBARS) were measured using the isolated, buffer-perfused lung model. Guinea pigs were challenged to 175 mg/m3 (44 ppm) phosgene for 10 minutes giving a concentration x time product of 1750 mg.min/m3 (437 ppm.min). Five minutes after removal from the exposure chamber, guinea pigs were treated, i.p., with 200 microL of 100 microM ETYA. 200 microL of 50 microM ETYA was added to the perfusate every 40 minutes, beginning at 60 minutes after start of exposure (t = 0). There were four groups in this study: air-treated, phosgene-exposed, ETYA-posttreated + phosgene, and ETYA-posttreated + air ETYA-posttreated + phosgene guinea pigs had significantly lower Ppa (P = .006), Paw (P = .009), and lwg (P = .016) compared with phosgene-exposed animals. Phosgene exposure reduced LTB4 compared with air-treated controls (P = .09). ETYA-posttreatment + phosgene had significantly increased perfusate LTB4 (P = .0006) compared with phosgene exposure only group. Total perfusate, LTC4 + LTD4 + LTE4, was not different between phosgene-exposed, air-treated or ETYA-posttreatment + phosgene over time. Posttreatment with ETYA significantly lowered TBARS formation, 206 +/- 13 versus 285 +/- 23 nmol/mg protein (P = .016), compared with phosgene-exposed lungs. Paradoxically, ETYA posttreatment decreased PEF and lipid peroxidation, but increased sulfidopeptide LT release from the lung during perfusion. We conclude that LTC4/D4/E4, and B4, may play different roles than previously thought for PEF in the isolated perfused lung model.  相似文献

Although evidence exists that insulin may cross the blood-brain barrier, little is known about the ability of insulin-like growth factors (IGF-I and -II) to cross this barrier. In the present studies, equimolar concentrations of equal specific activity 125I-labeled IGF-I, IGF-II, or insulin were infused into the carotid artery of anesthetized adult rats. The perfusions were carried out for 3 min in the presence or absence of excess unlabeled ligand or insulin, with three or more animals in each group. Immediately after the perfusion, brains were frozen and sectioned for autoradiography. All ligands were detected in choroid plexus, median eminence, and blood vessels, but [125I]IGF-I and -II were also prominently localized in brain parenchyma. Densitometric analysis of film autoradiographs (28-day exposure for all ligands) revealed that radiolabeled IGFs, especially IGF-I, were significantly more abundant throughout the forebrain than [125I]insulin, especially in the paraventricular nucleus, where [125I]IGF-I was 10-fold and [125I]IGF-II was 5-fold more abundant than [125I]insulin. The difference in [125I]IGF-I vs. [125I]insulin accumulation was confirmed by parallel measurements of radioactivity in anatomically matched brain sections using a gamma-spectrometer. The uptake of radiolabeled IGF-I, IGF-II, and insulin by brain parenchyma and vasculature was completely inhibited by excess (1,000-fold) unlabeled ligand; however, insulin (10,000-fold excess) did not completely abolish [125I]IGF-I and -II accumulation. Microscopic evaluation of nuclear emulsion-coated brain sections revealed that radioactivity associated with [125I]IGF-I and -II perfusions was selectively concentrated in capillaries and medium-sized parenchymal cells in the paraventricular nucleus and, to a lesser extent, the supraoptic nucleus and anterior nucleus of the thalamus, whereas in other brain regions the radioligands were mostly bound to capillaries. These results suggest that radiolabeled IGF-I and -II bind to brain capillaries and cross the blood-brain barrier into brain parenchyma more readily than radiolabeled insulin.  相似文献

Ninety-two-kilodalton type IV collagenase (MMP-9) is present in aortic aneurysms and may be important to the pathogenesis of this disease. Alteration in expression of MMP-9 or its inhibitor, the tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase type 1 (TIMP-1), could increase degradation of extracellular matrix and lead to aneurysm formation. The purpose of this study was (1) to measure tissue levels of MMP-9 and TIMP-1 mRNA in aneurysmal (AAA), atherosclerotic occlusive (AOD), and normal (NL) human infrarenal aorta; (2) to test for their expression by cultured AAA and NL vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs); and (3) to locate in situ the cells responsible for mRNA production within AAA, AOD, and NL aortic wall. Total RNA extracted from AAA (n = 8), AOD (n = 8), and NL (n = 7) tissue was subjected to Northern analysis. Signals for MMP-9 and TIMP-1 were normalized to alpha-tubulin. Mean values +/- SEM were compared by ANOVA. NL and AAA VSMCs were cultured, passaged, and grown to confluence before RNA extraction and Northern analysis. In situ hybridization with digoxigenin-labeled RNA probes localized cells responsible for MMP-9 and TIMP-1 mRNA expression within sections of AAA (n = 5), AOD (n = 2), and NL (n = 2) aorta. MMP-9 mRNA levels were significantly greater in AAA (0.855 +/- 0.180) than NL (0.046 +/- 0.23) (P < .02), but differences between AOD (0.406 +/- 0.196) and AAA or AOD and NL were not significant.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
