Conditional associative learning is impaired in cerebellar disease in humans.

Eight patients with lesions restricted to the cerebellum were compared with a total of 25 age-matched controls on an reaction time (RT) task allowing the recording of simple and choice RTs as well as RTs to abstract visual patterns signifying the particular movement to be performed. In all conditions the actual movements required (either a left or a right button press) remained the same, but the cognitive requirements of the task varied. In the abstract patterns condition, the significance of the various patterns with regard to the required movement had to be learned by the Ss. The patients with cerebellar lesions were particularly impaired in this condition. It is concluded that the cerebellum is involved not just in the timing of movements but also in the decision process as to which movement should be performed under particular circumstances. A boost-type converter for DC-supply of fluorescent lamps

A boost type converter is described that is suitable for low-voltage DC-supply of fluorescent lamps. It has inherent lamp current limitation (ballast action) and provides the high voltage pulses and electrode heating that are required for igniting the lamp. The proposed circuit is applicable in automotive, emergency, and portable light sources.<>     

Enhanced high-frequency performance in a GaAs, self-aligned, n-JFETusing a carbon buried p-implant

C ion implantation has been employed, for the first time, to form the buried p-layer in GaAs, self-aligned, ion implanted JFETs. Comparable DC performance was seen for JFETs with C or Mg implants; however, C-backside JFETs showed superior high-frequency performance. High dose C-backside devices had a f_t of 28.3 GHz and a f_max of 43.2 GHz for a 0.5 μm gate length that were 28% and 46% higher, respectively, than comparable Mg-implanted JFETs. This enhancement is a result of the lower C_gs in the C-backside device resulting from he inherently low activation of the implanted C below the channel while the C still effectively compensated the tail of the Si-channel implant. This approach relaxes the trade-off between optimizing the DC and the AC performance for the buried p-implant in GaAs JFETs and MESFET's     

Growth trends in wide-area TCP connections

A recently completed single-site study has yielded information about how Internet traffic will evolve, as new users discover the Internet and existing users find new ways to incorporate the Internet into their work patterns. The author reviews existing statistics and studies of network growth, which show that network traffic generally grows exponentially with time, at least until the network carrying capacity is reached. He then describes how he captured and reduced the data used in this study. The following points are also addressed: the overall growth in the site's wide-area traffic; the appearance of periodic traffic; the growth in network use by individual computers or users; and the changing geographic profile of the traffic. The implications and limitations of the results are also summarizes

What decides: high mortality in paediatric acute renal failure?

Forty paediatric cases of A.R.F. (Acute Renal Failure) of various aetiology were included in the study. 60% of patients were less than 4 years of age with male predominance. 80% cases reported to us very late with oligoanuria of more than 24 hours (2-7 days). Diarrhoea, vomiting and fever were other dominant symptoms. Maximum cases were severely anaemic (87.5%) with mean Hb 7.73 +/- 1.9 gm%. 40% cases were of underweight while only one case (2.5%) was of over weight, inspite of volume excess in 40% cases. All 24 cases, who were estimated for serum albumin, found to have marked hypoalbuminemia. Mortality was found to be as high as 65% inspite of effective peritoneal dialysis in all cases. High mortality seems to be due to profound anuria of many days (because of marked delay in reaching the hospital), fever and malnutrition besides other factors as aetiology.     

Lipoprotein(a) in patients with carotid atherosclerosis and ischemic cerebrovascular disorders

Two novel peptides, named PACAP (pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide) containing 38 (PACAP38) and 27 residues (PACAP27) were recently isolated from ovine hypothalami. In order to investigate the pituitary cell type(s) that bear a receptor for PACAP, PACAP38 was biotinylated and used for cytochemical examination of binding. The cells were also identified by immunocytochemical methods using the antisera against each of the rat anterior pituitary hormones or an antiserum against S-100 protein, a marker for pituitary folliculo-stellate (FS) cells. Biotinylated PACAP38 (biot-PACAP) exhibited adenylate cyclase stimulating activity (ACSA) comparable to PACAP38 in rat pituitary cell cultures, and displaced the bound 125I-PACAP27 to the rat pituitary membrane preparation to the same extent as PACAP38. After 2-4 days of culture, dispersed rat pituitary cells were incubated with varying concentrations of biot-PACAP at room temperature or 4 degrees C. The bound biot-PACAP38 was visualized by avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) method with nickel intensification. Biot-PACAP-positive and pituitary hormone or S-100-positive cells were counted. More than 90% of S-100-positive cells bound biot-PACAP38. A considerable number of GH and PRL cells and a lesser number of ACTH cells also bound biot-PACAP38, whereas only a few identified LH, FSH, or TSH cells bound biot-PACAP38. These results suggest that FS cells are a major target cell type for PACAP. A recent study from our laboratory demonstrated that PACAP stimulated the release of interleukin (IL)-6 in rat pituitary cell cultures. FS cells are known to produce IL-6.     

Respiratory symptoms and bronchial responsiveness are related to dietary salt intake and urinary potassium excretion in male children

Six men were accidentally exposed to NO2 when they were changing a propeller using a gas burner in the poorly ventilated hold of a ship. All of them were admitted to hospital with shortness of breath and cough. Chest X-ray on admission revealed diffuse, patchy and infiltrative shadows, leading to the diagnosis of pulmonary edema in all five patients. Steroid therapy was effective and followed by a quick recovery in all patients. None developed third phase manifestations characterized pathologically by bronchiolitis obliterans.
